Sit-ups - you are definitely going to be doing a lot of these in basic training, so let me show you how to great a great sit-up routine for you. All right first of all what I am going to want you to do is get down on the ground in the sit-up position. In order to do sit-ups it is best to have someone holding your feet. Now this is a typical sit-up from start to finish. Your fingers are interlocked behind your head. That's one complete sit-up. Now this is the routine I want you to do. I want you to go halfway up and halfway down until exhaustion. Now what that does is that builds a certain part of your muscles in your stomach. Then, once you have reached exhaustion, wait a few minutes, and then do the upper half crunches. Do that until exhaustion, ans that's one set. So you've got lower half and then upper half. You want to do that three times. Okay so that's how to do a sit-up and that's a great sit-up routine. Now abs are a little different because you can work them every day. It doesn't require as much muscle recovery time as your other muscle groups. So if you feel like you can do it again the very next day, you are not sore, don't work out when you're sore, if you're not sore with your ab muscles go ahead and do that whole routine again. Next week you might want to up it to four sets, and who knows, if you want even add a small weight or a rock or something safe to your chest, maybe about five or ten pounds, and do some sit-ups that way as well. What you are doing is you are replicating the exact movement that you are going to be doing at basic training, so that also helps with muscle memory retention.

I'm going to try this method. I'm 42, at 38, the most situps I did for an APFT was 81. Now, just 4 years later, I'm only doing around 55. Just doing the standard all the way up just isn't working. I'm doing these now for a few weeks. Then do as many full situps as I can to see if it works.
@jpd782
@jpd782 7 лет назад
They seem to be working? The upper situps felt a bit weird. Didn't feel like I was working any muscles. After a couple weeks I was able knock out 40 non stop. I still do these but haven't tested my full situps since. I have PT test in October. I SHOULD be where I need to be by then.

Forgive me if this has been asked before, but if I do curl ups instead of sit ups (they're similar but your arms are crossed and hands must stay on chest entire time) could the same routine be followed? Thanks for any insight.
@AlexLococo
@AlexLococo 10 лет назад
Yes, the only difference between them is that sit ups have more resistance against your abs because of the increased weight further away from the axis. The muscles, however, move exactly the same, and as such, curl ups can help you replace sit ups altogether if you feel you're too tired.

Word of warning do not put your hands behind your head when doing sit ups you can strain your neck pretty bad. Best way of doing them is hands across your chest and then do the sit ups that way it prevents neck injury. I learnt that from my pti in the British Army.

What is planking, as done instead of sit-ups ? Anyone, Please.
@kyled3235
@kyled3235 8 лет назад
+HeySlowPokes Do both, Planking is a great exercise that works your whole core, however it should not be done alone, but rather as a finisher exercise. Even together situps and planks form a pretty weak ab workout. I would add in leg raises and/or flutter kicks. Maybe even more. Just remember to get a six-pack, or a strong overall core, you'll need more than 1 or two exercises.
@RenegadeElite101
@RenegadeElite101 8 лет назад
+Kyle D Exercise is only part of the formula for a 6 pack, you have to get your BF% down to about 10%. Exercising your abs and core will help make your 6 pack more noticeable, but if your overweight it will only make you look fatter. Always pair a couple of good cardio workouts and a healthy diet with your core exercises and a 6 pack should be a piece of cake.

agamemnonn1 I know what FM 7-22 states I'm relaying information from recent BCT graduates. during training they are saying interlaced on top of their head to prevent injury to the spine. which the question was directed for BCT not normal Army unit PT. That is all.

Realizing it is quite difficult to do the upper workout without your feet being held...pretty much impossible to do with good form

+Alex Tobias I use things around the house to hold my feet down, try putting your feet under your bed, couch, or end table. It really helps to increase your reps, speed, and form when you have something holding your feet down.

about to rock your world. having your feet down makes it a hundred times harder. when your feet are flat your hip flexer is disengaged meaning all the work is in your upper core. point your toes up and youll notice a world of difference. I would practice with feet flat for extra resistance, then when test time comes point them toeies up and max out
