Great video. After both of my 2011's RXT260's lost the intercoolers, I installed the catch cans as well. One nice thing as well is if there is any moisture in the oil you will see it in the catch can, which will fill with the condensed vapor as well. Highly recommend product, just to prevent the oil back into the intakes and if you have them intercoolers.

I appreciate how you guys use the torque wrench on everything. I’ve been made fun of in my shop(s) for using a torque wrench on just about everything. Your channel is good inspiration to continue to do jobs the right way, by the book, and torquing fasteners properly!

Thanks, Hawkeye! My buddy's son over-tightened the oil pan screw on his brand new Yamaha dirtbike and stripped the threads on his first oil change. He had to take it to the dealer and get over $500 worth of repair work done. Another great reason to use a torque wrench!

As I flushed my skis to put them away for the winter, I noticed the water hose attachment point started to spin and was very loose. Could you guys do a video on how to properly replace or re-install the through hull water hose connector? Thanks!

I am planning to install the Riva catch can on my brand new 2022 GTX Limited 300 since I have heard a lot of people having intercooler prolems. Do you know if it voids the factory warranty? Great video by the way! Thanks!

If it’s installed correctly, I don’t see any way the manufacturer can void the warranty if it’s installed. Essentially, you’re just removing dirty, oily air from the intake of your intercooler.

We’re not saying that if installed in a machine and your engine blows up, your dealer won’t try to blame the catch can installation. It just wouldn’t be reasonable if they did. Also, no respectable dealer is going to say “Oh you want to start ripping into your intake/emission system? Sure, go ahead. No problem with the warranty.”

Red Loctite on the bolts that hold the catch can to the bracket is wrong, it is down right wrong because it locks so hard you just might turn the brass inserts in the plastic before the bolt breaks loose if you ever need to remove them. Blue is more then adequate for both.

Those are the instructions. I guess the idea is that the two should not be separated again. The "two have become one".

No. Red Loctite on both (I've got the instructions right here). But thanks for questioning!

@@3ftDeepChannel Well all I can say is after 4 decades of working on high-end machinery and being a F1 engineer I have learned to not use red Loctite on plastic nut inserts and to not always trust or take a set of instructions as the gospel truth. In this case I will say using red Loctite on those bolts is 100% wrong and you are doing the users of the product a great dis-service. Otherwise you guys make some greatly informative videos for the PWC community, keep up the good work and thanks.

Thanks for your comment. We were talking about this yesterday, and we think the folks at RIVA want the bracket and can "to become one" when it's finished. In other words, there would be no reason in the future to take them apart. Only a theory, though. Only the folks at RIVA know, and I'm sure it's a trade secret ...like the recipe for KFC ;)

I am seeing this oily build up as well in a 2018 GTX 230. Was this recirculation found to be the root cause or is there another way for oil to get into the air intake system? I am concerned that if I install this catch can kit it may only be masking a problem, or not be the solution. Any comments or thoughts you may have would be appreciated! Great video!

No, that is the way oil it gets into the air intake system. You can see the way the air flows by following the tubes. Thanks for your comment.

Shouldn't be necessary if your oil level on the dipstick is between the low mark and the middle. Oil in IC happens when there is too much oil in the engine. A racing mechanic and my dealer told me that. I'm looking on every oil change that there is not too much oil in and my IC is dry ;-) But a catch can is ofc a good alternative - personally I don't like that the engine oily air gets into the hull. It's filtered but I don't trust that filter ;-) nice video anyway - 3ftDeep quality :)

Some interesting insight that I've never heard before. I don't mind a little oily air getting into the hull (if any actually does pass through the air filter), as it'll help keep those metal parts coated and give them some resistance against salt water corrosion. Thanks for your comment, Alex.

First of all thanks for all the great info ! My question is I have a new gtx300 (2021)and have only put 5 hours on it so far. Do you think I need to clean out the intercooler before installing a riva catch can or should I be OK just installing catch can only at this 5 hour point ?

With only five hours on your machine, I wouldn’t worry about cleaning out the intercooler at this point. Next time you are deep into your machine though and have good access to your intercooler you may want to check it out inside to make sure it’s clean. Good luck.

Always enjoy your videos. Seems like most catch cans on the 300s spit oil out of the breather filter on the can. Does your Riva can spit and did it have any baffle material in it?

I haven’t noticed any oil being spit out, yet. Everything seems to be working perfectly. I didn’t notice any baffle material in it. It’s in storage right now. Thanks for your kind words.

I have a 2016 rxp x 300 and installed on my machine. I noticed mine does spit some out of the breather from time to time. On my 260 it does not

It may be that you are overfilling your 300 unit with oil. If not, it may be just something you need to live with. Thanks for your comment.

No double checked oil levels in both machines rxp 300 only has 54hrs ....there should not be any difference based on the models , but I’ll live with it! These catch cans are a must !!!! I’d never run one without it...and personally speaking don’t cheap out and buy a $50 “universal “ catch can for your machine. Riva has a proven track record and I def standby there products...my two cents :)

Thanks for your videos! Do you know if this is an issue on the 2007 gtx-Sc? I didn't notice much oil build in the pipes after running 2 years (with a fizzle intercooler)

It can be. It will tend to accumulate most in your intercooler. Check it out next time you're doing a clean. Also, you'll get a bit more power when your machine isn't breathing in oily vapor. Thanks for your comment.

Would you recommend to use a different brand for catch can. The one you are using is $150 but there is cheaper brands on Amazon. I'm planning to instal one on Scarab 195 HO Impulse. Any thoughts? Thank you!

We've had a machine with a home-made version, and the RIVA Racing one and they both worked great. It doesn't need to be fancy, but the key is to find one that can easily fit your machine to save installation time. We really liked that the RIVA Racing version came with everything we needed for a very quick installation, including a bracket that accommodated our machine. Just make sure the hose diameters fit your machine, and that it's easy to remove the oil collected. Good luck!

What size torque screw are those engine bolts? Those are the “star”shaped bolts, right? Finally, this is the only good video about this on RU-vid. None of the other show exactly where the hose goes or where the vent plug cap goes. The ones that tried have terrible camera work and it’s so dark you can’t see anything. As with all 3 feet deep videos the quality is superb. I just want to let you folks at 3 feet know how much better your videos are than anybody else out there. Hell, the instructions that RIVA sent are even terrible. And they didn’t even try to make a video about the install.

Those are M6 x 45 Flanged Torx screws. I really regret not trying to get my GoPro in behind the exhaust manifold for a really tight shot, but after reviewing the video when it was done, I remembered how tight the space is. Thanks for the very kind words!

After watching your video, I purchased the Riva Racing catch can for my 2019 RXT230 but can’t get my standard external torx E6 socket to fit on my manifold bolts? Does it require an e Torx plus (EP6 socket) instead of a standard eTorx? Do I need a thin walled deep well? Any advice on the exact type/brand of socket you used? This should be an easy job but the install location is a tight space and flanged Torx screw M6x45 doesn’t fit my E6 socket. I must be overlooking something…..

Easy to empty the catch can ? How is this done, do you just open the valve and let it drip oil out , isn't that messy ?

That is how you empty it, but it's advisable to put a cup underneath it first. 😄

There is little benefit to install a catch can on a non-super charged, non-intercooled engine. So, I wouldn’t bother on your machine.

Good question. It'll probably foul the filter, depending on how long it's upside down for, but I'm not worried about it. The filters aren't too expensive. It's very easy to empty the can, so you shouldn't let it fill up very much. Thanks for your comment.

Ok i do it today everything like in video. After riding about 50 miles i went to dock and check the catch can. And i see under was a little bit of oil. Catch can was close so from where this oil come ?

I don’t quite understand. What do you mean “under was a little bit of oil”, and “catch can was close”? If you have oil in your catch can from only riding 50 miles, you probably overfilled your engine with oil. You should check that right away and remove some if you’ve overfilled.

I never understood this. Your crankcase air is now going inside the hull??? What happrns to unburned gas inside your hull? 😢

There shouldn’t be any significant amount of gasoline in the crankcase vapour. It should stay in the cylinders or you’ve got too much blow-by.

You will empty it when it gets full of oil. Because it’s plastic and translucent, you will be able to see the oil fill up. It doesn’t really need to be drained until it is full.

Where is the oil level ? It should be halfway between the bends when checking as described in the manual if it's been overfilled it will vent to the catch can. Any messages or codes on the dash, any oil in the coolant or coolant in the oil ? Beeps can be anything from poor key connection to overheating to low fuel.

Just put a new ride plate on an new impeller an new coolant no coolant in oil or anything like that I bleeded coolant really no air bubbles

You’ve overfilled the engine oil. Check the level right away following the owner’s manual instructions.

Whenever it gets filled up. That will depend on how much you ride, and how much oil is getting into your system. If you overfill your oil (don't do that!), it will fill up quickly. So, under normal conditions I'd suggest checking the level every 10 hours or so. Good luck.

@@3ftDeepChannel Speaking of oil level should it be between the indent on the dip stick or to the top. When I check my Dip stick when the machine is cold it is at the top of the indentation

Let your engine run for about 30 seconds, turn off your machine and let it sit for 30 seconds. Then check your oil right away. It should be between the indent on the dipstick.

There are not many places for it. By placing it where they did, it provides a sturdy anchor point to the ski.

You can, but there's not much benefit to it. It's primarily used to divert oil from the air intake so it doesn't foul up your intercooler and supercharger. If you don't have either, you can really help out your engine and performance by not overfilling with oil. Good luck.

I do not recommend installing this type of air breathing catch can. The proper catch can should be a non air breathing or closed catch can and should go back to the fitting you capped off.

Breather back into the intake is the stupidest idea on all skis. My yamaha one came off straight away. Its not a natural cycle of how an engine should run

@@3ftDeepChannel its madness. I get the reason behind wanting to be emission friendly etc for marine environment but we are talking machines now churning out about 5MPG when at full speed.
