How to install a Ryzen/AM4 & AM5 Wraith CPU Cooler

AMD Ryzen CPU's Amazon - amzn.to/3r6G5Tv (USA/Can/Europe)
A clear and quick guide to installing a Ryzen CPU and the stock heatsink/fan/cooler supplied with many AM4/Ryzen CPU's. Please note the procedure for installation is the same on AM4 and AM5 motherboards, both have an identical design. AM4 coolers can be used on AM5 boards too. The only difference is the AM5 CPUs are using LGA (landing grip array) compared to the AM4 pins which are present on the CPU.
The AMD Wraith coolers come boxed with many CPU's but require the brackets to be removed from the motherboard to fit the cooler which screws directly to the back plate. I show you how to install the CPU and the AMD stock cooler.

Thanks so much! Just in case you guys didn't know, if you are trying to replace a cpu, the back plate can fall down without you knowing so you have to take off the side panel!

@@BUHDAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA Does it still turn though while not unscrewing? If so, hold a fingernail under the cap of the screw while **slowly** unscrewing it. Worth a shot if you ever need it to get unstuck.

@@glacialimpala Try putting your fingernail under the head of the screw. Or a very thin screwdriver (not recommended as it can scratch the soldering meant to ground the screwholes)

Thanks. I think I need to tighten my cooler more, not sure I've got higher temps than expected. I found the back plate + spring loaded really tricky to install, so knowing that I can't overtighten is golden to hear.

For those of you having a very hard time fitting the spring, I've spent hours trying to fit it just to figure out that my motherboard or the cooler itself had a back piece (mounted on the back of the motherboard) to fit the screws better. I'd advice to call someone to hold backplate while another person screws (don't be afraid to push it). Hope it helps someone!

No worries! All you need is to hold the back plate in place (or use a book etc) It's not the best design they ever made, the brackets being there confuses a lot of people.

The metal plate thing that holds the CPU cooler was flaying around behind the motherboard, I was sweating for 5 minutes wondering why the the cooler won't screw in 😂. I had to hold the plate with one hand and screw the cooler with the other.

Posting my personal issue/solution: I was having difficulty reinstalling the CPU cooler after taking it off because the spring screws would not reach down far enough to contact the threads. I thought I wasn't applying enough pressure to reattach the spring screws, but it turns out that the backplate on the reverse of the motherboard (that has the contact points for the spring screws) had fallen off & out of reach. Duh.

Make sure it's on a flat surface shouldn't have a problem or get someone to hold the backplate whilst you screw it up. Just slightly screw one, then go to the next one rather than screwing one in fully

Screw one screw in just until it is entered and turning, then start on the opposite corner to ensure the component is going on evenly. Once you have all screws entered tighten one then opposite corner. Work it in evenly until all screws are secure.

My screws for the cooler aren't low enough to touch the bottom of the mobo :( Edit: I figured it out, but I have no idea what I did lol it was a while ago Another Edit: I remember, it turns out there wasn't the baseplate on the back, it was freely roaming around my PC instead of screwed in lol

I had to put quite a bit of pressure on mine in order for it to get seated properly. It took like 30 mins of going easy on it before I snapped and went all in lol.

That's not right shouldn't bow out the board, re-attach it, the back plate should be flat it just screws into that.

getting this done was prob the most stressful thing of all the parts, it's very sensitive and the cooler can get uneven pretty fast with just a slighly turn on the first screw at the beggining lol. well at least it's not those annoying plastic pins intel still uses...

I can only screw in the 2 top screws. The bottom two are dangling, as they can't reace the holes to be screwed in. Am i doing something wrong? I removed the 2 brackets that come pre-attached. I then aligned the cpu fan, and began screwing. To my surprise, not all screws can reach. :/ Mobo: Asus Tuf Gaming x570-Plus Wifi

Thanks ! I messed up after i unscrewd the old COOLER because that backplate fell off into the pc ... luckily i can just unscrew the back of the tower easily and hold that plate with my hand or something and i can put the new cooler. XD

Thank you! I was apparently installing mine correctly but I just had to be sure. I couldn't get two of the four cooler screws from my Ryzen 5 into my Asus motherboard, turns out I just needed to really really REALLY push them together while turning the screw. Here's hoping it works lol.

Thanks, man! After watching your video, I ditched my over-cautiousness and got two other screws all the way in for the CPU. Hopefully, I won't suffer the heating problem with the Ryzen 5 3600 again. (I experienced it only once right after mounting it)

I know some of the boards were pushing the voltage a bit high on the new Ryzens, so might be worth checking for a BIOS update on the mobo. If you still have heat issues maybe re grease it with premium compound, or third party ones the Artic series is pretty good and not expensive. They do tend to run hotter than the 1/2 gen Ryzens, but some were running way hotter so try the BIOS route if you have problems first

@@MrBazReviews Right on, always a good idea to get things up-to-date. Everything runs fine on my ROG Strix B450-F Gaming, even through a modern game on high settings, for now.

Because the AM4 and AM5 boards use the same method to attach the CPU, the only difference is the CPU doesn't have pins on the AM5 boards, the rest is identical. I guess AMD did it so more CPU coolers can be used, without changing the design. Lucky for me too I suppose!

Thanks I know how to take it off but thanks to the old thermal paste it had dried onto the cpu and was stuck I’m amazed the cpu dident over heat

I usually heat up the CPU before removing (ie stress it a bit then power off) makes it easier. Sometimes paste can harden it shouldn't but it can

Twas such a pain trying to screw this into my MSI board. I thought I was going to break the thing with how much pressure I had to apply just to get the screws to thread.

A person said tighten it 4-5 times. I did that and got 65C Avg on idle. Ryzen 5 3600. After tightening it completely I got 38-42C idle. So much diff.

I bought my mobo "new" from a local famous store from my city but it didn't have the backplates... Do you think i can get a refund or a change for a mobo from the same model but with the backplates?

Not sure if I’m just an idiot or something but, my cooler keeps moving all over the place and I when I apply pressure to catch the thread it just won’t so I sat there for about 2 hours just on that last part of screwing the stupid shit in and it just won’t. Any suggestions

As shown hold the back plate in place otherwise you're screwing into nothing!

They work fine, hold the backplate in place and screw the cooler down

Worked all this out today then come see this video.. im only here as trying to find out what the black plastic bits are i took off first 🤦🏻‍♂️🤷🏻‍♂️ (amd n00b) Still none the wiser but good video 👌🏻☺️

They're just there in case some cooler fits onto them, but the AMD one doesn't so you have to remove them. They also hold the back plate in place ;-D
