**2023 UPDATE!! In this video at 22.18mins you see Caleb put the stove flashing ontop of the shingles. This was incorrect. It should go underneath the shingles. You can see the follow up video we did here • We made a mistake!!! W...

In this DIY video we are sharing our experience of how to install a wood burning stove DIY step by step, how we did it and what we learned. If like us you have never done this before, this video covers how to install a wood stove chimney through the roof, how to install a double wall stove pipe, how to connect double wall stove pipe to triple wall chimney, how to connect a double wall stove pipe. We also share which stove we purchased and the reasons we chose it.
The overall install was not super technical but its important to understand the parts your using, what they do and the science of how they work to make your wood burning stove efficient and safe. The only other advice we have is use more silicone than you think you need !!! We had a couple of leaks to solve after install where some water got underneath the flashing.

Next time don't fold the box over the shingles and tuck the roof flashing under the top shingles as that will leak

Pull that flashing off and the ceiling support box edges you flapped over the top of the shingles. Cut those flaps off and screw into the inners of the roof joists. Then make sure the upper half of the flashing is slid under a few layers of shingles. Nice video. Just trying to save you a bad leak before it happens. Because it will. And you’re going to have to redo it anyways. Might as well do it now before it ruins your drywall ceiling inside and the insulation.

You are totally right ! We have had a persistent leak - credit to Caleb it hasnt been bad but he said the shingles were/are old and so he didn't want to lift them and risk them tearing so thats why he went over. I think then he cut the flaps off. But none the less, the leak is there and we need to re do it - but most likely at the same time as replacing all the shingles as its about time it was done ! Job on the list before winter - will post a follow up video for sure - thanks so much for your message !

Great family, congratulations! We subscribed.. I love what you're building over there. My wife and I live in Denver and we want OUT! It's nerve wracking and we've been looking for property and we're already half packed and ready to go even though we don't have a place yet! Your video is clear and easy to understand. You didn't show how you came up with the precise place to make your first penetration in the ceiling. I imagine you placed the stove, used a plumb bob to mark the center, figured your square dimensions then did the same under the sheathing. I just collapsed the telescoping flu on my stove and used fat wood to start a fire and it stunk to high heaven and I noticed smoke was escaping at the ceiling penetration. I must've untwisted it..Nice job and my wife and I will see other videos on your channel...

We were pretty limited with where we could put our stove due to this shouse being so small - and to get the correct height of the chimney and clearance above the roof apex we needed to be pretty close to the peak of the roof to ensure a good draw on the flu. Thanks for your comment !

Great to see someone actually DIY an install; the fireplace shops charge a lot of money for this relatively medium difficulty project. its not rocket science. Probably a good idea to check local codes. In Canada, the chimney height is minimum of 3 feet, and with that pitched roof you should have been about 5 feet and with braces (for Canadian code). Since kits come in 4 ft sections (Excel kit) you would have ordered 8 feet of chimney from the start. in other words, the first instal was obviously too short. Also, the chimney support box distance from the inside ceiling needs a minimum clearance; this instal is probably very close to the minimum. Of course, the stove clearances and floor protection areas (particularly if you have carpet) also need to be checked.
@TheLittlePalletFarmhouse
@TheLittlePalletFarmhouse 9 месяцев назад
thankyou !! Sorry i missed this comment!! We did a follow up video because we also need to re do the flashing ( and explained that in the video - also gave us a chance to clean the pipe out and see what sort of creosote build up there was) as to clearances yes - i am from the UK where you can't sneeze without a code ( lol) and live in rural Missouri where there is basically no code ( eek) so i try to do my homework!! We had a challenge with this "shouse" being so small and needed to work with closer clearances which we overcame by using double wall pipe and stove designed with a rear heat sheild, but as to the chimney we did build it up ( i think i showed that in the end) since we were within 10 feet of the roof peak we needed to go 2 ft taller than the peak - so we added 3 more sections of chimney above the roof, i think we have 8 or 9 ft inside of stove pipe. The total length of the chimney from the top to the base of stove pipe seems to have a good draw and i def learned more about chimneys than i ever thought i would ! lol.

It looks like another part should be there. There is like a 1 or 2 inch area with holes and some insulation. Does that end up outside your chimney pipe? @TheLittlePalletFarmhouse
@TheLittlePalletFarmhouse 9 месяцев назад
i wouldn't be very smart if i hadn't thought about those things!!! We used a double wall stove pipe ( insulated) so it doesn't heat up like a single wall. Keeps the flue at a higher temp and creates a better draw. The stove we purchased is designed for small spaces and comes with a rear heat shield. Can also have side head shields added. So to answer your question the clearances were different for our setup, we followed the instal regulations and no the window and curtains don't even get warm!

Excellent Video. Question - what was the length of the chimney and where did you get it from?
@TheLittlePalletFarmhouse
@TheLittlePalletFarmhouse 9 месяцев назад
I'm sorry i missed your comment - all the links for products are in the video description - the chimney ( the silver part above the roof) came part from home depot and part from tractor supply but its all the same brand. The length of the chimney will vary from install to install because you need to clear the apex of your roof by a certain amount to make sure you get a good draw in your flu. If you look up the 321 rule for chimneys it says it has to be 3 feet clear of where you penetrate the roof and 2 feet taller than any part of the bulding that is within 10 feet. We were close to the apex of our roof so we had to build up the chimney to make it 2 feet taller if that makes sense. Inside the house with the stove pipe i think the general rule of thumb is around 10 feet ( the longer your chimney the stronger the draft) but you can also get stoves with an oxygen intake to help with that aaaand then there are rear exiting stoves... hope that helps some!!

@TheLittlePalletFarmhouse

We used an adhesive called “through the roof” and we should have tucked the top half of the collar under the shingles ( read all the comments) but the reason we didnt is because the shingles are in bad shape and Caleb thought they would tear by trying to lift them… so really we need to take it off and re do it - but yeah tuck your collar under the shingles… the adhesive mentioned is really good

@TheLittlePalletFarmhouse
@TheLittlePalletFarmhouse 9 месяцев назад
we were really limited with where we could place our stove so when i researched the type of stove i wanted i was specifically searching for a stove that is built for small space living - when you start to look into it Different stoves have different options. Our stove -and many in the englander range come with rear and side heat shields meaning the clearances can be tighter. If you look into stoves built for mobile homes then you will find they are built differently. When we first installed ours i was going to change our window curtains out for a blind, and i was checking all the time the stove was on to see if heat was transferring and they barely get warm. My hubs said you can actually touch the back of the stove when its on ( not that i've tried it lol) but to answer your question its designed for a closer clearance that what is standard. You still want to follow the clearances recommended in the install manual though. Also make sure you check part 2 of the install video because Caleb re did the chimney through the roof in terms of the way he flashed with the shingles. Hope this helps!

@TheLittlePalletFarmhouse
@TheLittlePalletFarmhouse Год назад
Yes it leaked!! I asked Him why he did it like that but he said he thought the shingles would tear if he had lifted them… we’ve actually just finished redoing it as we added a porch and re shingled the whole roof- will post the new vid soon! Thanks for your comment 🙌🏻🙌🏻

I’ve always lifted the shingles above the chimney and pushed the flashing under them….or removed and reinstalled the shingles over the flashing …it then will never leak ..

@@TheLittlePalletFarmhouse I had a wood stove and fire place store in Quebec during the early eighties… and Im proud to say the very first Vermont Castings Canadian dealer …the team installed a lot of prefab chimneys and it was with manufacturers instructions we didn’t get call backs. The installer shouldn’t learn on your dime …call him back and have him fix it. One other note .. did you or do you need to have it added to your house insurance ? In Canada when you install a solid fuel appliance, its a good idea to let your home insurer know…then it get added to your policy just in case ..

do you have to do anything to wall behind it?
@TheLittlePalletFarmhouse
@TheLittlePalletFarmhouse Год назад
We are not experts but from the research we did, it seems to depend on the make and model of the stove and also the clearance/distance to the wall. The model we got does not give out a great heat output to the rear so for us any wall tile or stone we put up would be for decorative reasons

what about a cold air combustion intake?
@TheLittlePalletFarmhouse
@TheLittlePalletFarmhouse Год назад
Because of the make and model and also the square footage of where we were installing it, this stove didn't need cold air intake, it draws from the surroundings. However we do crack the window when the stove is on, mostly because it gets so warm we need cold air flow too !! lol - but yes some other stoves require a pipe through the wall to bring cold air in. I remember reading about that when i was choosing which stove to purchase.

If there are truly "independent" reviews, I'd like to know where they are. Seems every site I've been to says that they "may get a small commission" if you buy a stove through their site. Huge conflict of interest. Of course they're going to recommend stoves that get a commission for! That's why there's NO agreement on best stoves!
@TheLittlePalletFarmhouse
@TheLittlePalletFarmhouse 9 месяцев назад
hardly ! We are promoting what we know like and trust. Lol we would hardly have gone to the lengths of installing a stove we didn't feel good about just to earn a 0.2% commission from amazon!! That would be a conflict of "our interests" - also it takes hours of editing and filming to put videos together for other people to consume for free - there has to be some ability to earn income somewhere along the line or the only people who would have time to make content are those who don't need to earn a living - and that is not us!!

This is not how you want to install the roof saddle, that, is wrong. That saddle top and sides must be under the shingles. You may have to cut back the shingles or heat them a bit to bend them. the bottom edge is the only part that sits on top of the shingles. More important, the stove clearances from the combustible materials are way too close, no way are they safe.
@TheLittlePalletFarmhouse
@TheLittlePalletFarmhouse 9 месяцев назад
Thanks Keith- we posted a follow up video of tucking the flashing under the shingles in tbe spring when we re did the roof- there is a note to explain in the description… as to the clearances this is per instal manual, our stove is built for mobile homes and has side and rear heat shields together with double wall pipe- there is no heat from the back of this stove during a full burn- all heat from top and front
