How to install an oil pressure sender in the Boosted Miata

In this video, I show how I installed an oil pressure sender in the Boosted Miata. I used a VDO unit and the link is down below.
To do this, you need a 15/16" or 24MM socket to remove the existing oil pressure switch. You need an adapter to adapt the 1/8 NPT threads of the sender to the 1/8 BSPT threads of the block.
Use blue loctite sparingly on the the threads and thread the adapter into the block. The VDO sender had a 17MM hex nut on the back that you can "try" to get a wrench on. Removing the oil filter and oil cooler may help here. I had no luck this way and ended up just using a rag and threading the sender in by hand as tight as I could. It doesn't leak, but I would certainly try to wrench it on if you can.

I put a sender and gauge from a 91 in my 96. It takes a while, but is not too difficult. Remove the passenger side wheel and the plastic undertray, then remove the intake manifold brace, oil filter, and the 2 bolt bracket in front of the starter. Once that is done, you have more than enough space to remove the dummy sender with a 24mm deep socket. To install the OEM miata pressure gauge you must use a 17mm crow foot with a 4-6inch extension. Do not tighten the sender by hand or use the 30mm top "bolt.' If you do, you will spin the case off the base of the sender and break the wire that connects to the spade connector. 80-90psi at cold startup is normal. After about 30 sec, pressure will drop to 60, then to 30 when fully warm.

oh thank god, I saw the high oil pressure and freaked tf out also I didn't remove anything to take out the dummy switch oil pressure sender. I just got a 15/16 deep socket with some extensions and snaked my hands below the intake manifold then I got the new one, snaked it in, managed to get it in by hand, after finding something I thought was the right hole. after that I used the same method with extensions to tighten it down. you don't really have to worry about the wire too much, after all it's unplugged whole process took about 20-30 minutes because of the struggle to find the right tools I'm sure I didn't really do it the right way but it worked, and with not too much trouble. nothing broke

This oil pressure needle indicator has it origins in marketing. It is much the same as the coolant temperature "gauge" that stays in the middle until the engine is on the razor's edge of over heating cooking the head gasket and more. The marketing folks figured there were too many customer complains due to the gauge needles moving around. To limit and reduce these superfluous customer complaints the Mazda folks "Jimmied" the gauges to stay put delivering the owner-driver a sense of perceived comfort that all is OK. -This now common practice of "indicator gauges" in modern motor vehicles is much a reflection of what the owners and drivers of motor vehicles has become and what they expect.

I dunno how u got in there but it's nice to see that new coolant cooler line. NA rube u did that after the block was low painted? I'm replacing mine soon and thinking about getting a new oil switch and vvt tube.

This is the reason why I will switch the gauge mechanism...

Sean! Welcome back! Will the Sensor from the 90-94 cars hook right up so you don't need an aftermarket one?(For the NB's I mean, I know people do it with 95-97 NA's all the time.) Also, idk if its possible to swap into the NB, but people with 95-97 cars that swap the Real sensor in also swap the Gauge, I wonder if you could swap the gauge as well and just keep the gauge face? also an idea, once you get a real measurement on your gauge you should mark it, and you can have Adam from Revlimiter make you some sweet gauges and he can put accurate marks on there for you too!

Thanks! Not sure if the earlier gauge will swap, but the face is black not white. I never looked into whether the older sender will work, I doubt it since it doesn't seem to be a solution for the NB on the inter webs. I know there is way to remove the damping in this gauge, but honestly it doesn't bother me much. I think I'm fine with this so long as I center the needle. I actually like the white faces on the NB2 gauges, mine are slowly yellowing so maybe I'll see what Adam can do for me with another white set with the oil pressure actually marked.

I have a Miata 199? engine transmission in my 1969 Datsun Roadster... Id like to keep the Datsun gauges. The Datsun oil pressure gauge is analog old style tube to motor style, can I run a flex tube to that port, and run it to my Datsun oil pressure gauge? I have a problem with the water temp too... and the tach and speedometer. The Datsun Tach is cable driven like the speedometer.. any thought on how I can get all of these old Datsun analog gauges, working with this modern Miata engine. Any help from anyone would be greatly appreciated.

I'm wondering if this VDO oil pressure sending unit will work on 1990 Mazda Miata (of course with the adapter). Do I need to replace the OEM oil pressure gauge to a VDO oil pressure gauge? do let me know because I need to work on my Uncles 1990 Miata. Thanks in advance.

The early Miatas have a real pressure sender, so no need to replace unless not working, then use a stock replacement one in that case.

Can I just replace the sender with a standalone sensor and gauge?
@ChutneyInc.
@ChutneyInc. 2 года назад
I want to say... of course with an oil filter adapter like one u would use when adding a turbo. Maybe at that time I would just invest in a multi function gage.

I have a 94 that has the numbers on it but it stays at the bottom. What do you think I should replace?
@Seandoestech
@Seandoestech 7 лет назад
Derek Beatty does it move at all? could be bad, but you could also be very low on oil pressure. maybe check it with an oil pressure gauge or test the sender resistance.
@derekbeatty2567
@derekbeatty2567 7 лет назад
No it does not move at all and it is the year that should move and be accurate. It does have oil pressure but I don't have a tester

My car when warmed up reads 5 psi on idle and 27 under load, 15 when crusing 1990 miata Oil level is fine
@HooverTuber
@HooverTuber 3 года назад
Yikes! That’s low. I would verify your gauge is correct. You should be max out around 50-60 PSI on a healthy engine, drop as low as mid 20s at idle when warm.

@@HooverTuber yeah I stay between 30 and 60 even full boost on 91

I've been wanting to do this to my '97 for a while. Thanks for sharing! I was just reading the instructions about this the other day. www.mossmotors.com/graphics/products/instructions/904-431.pdf

You need to remove the damping from your gauge!

Yeah - I'll look into it, but it's not that terrible honestly.

I used TDR sender kit on my 97, works great - normal speed (fast?) trackdogracing.com/oilpressurekit95-05.aspx Your sender is too slow...
@Seandoestech
@Seandoestech 7 лет назад
That's the exact same sender I installed. The problem is that the NB gauges are dampened, you have to modify the gauge so it reacts faster. I'll do it some day...
