I always got the factory adapter plug to make the radio wiring fit into the automaker's plug. Made wiring easy as you could join wires outside the car. Then just plug it in and test it.
@scottykilmer

very carefully, even I break em on occassion. Most are held in by snaps that are hard to unsnap without snapping the plastic off on the edges.
@scottykilmer

you can solder them, but on low power like radio wires I just use those little connector ends that screw the wires together, all hardware stores sell em.
@scottykilmer
@scottykilmer 12 лет назад
you'd have to trace em all to be safe. But find the power and ground wires first, normally red, yellow, and black, test them using a volt meter. The speaker wires go in pairs next to each other, so when you find one speaker wire, it's pair is next to it.

of course it would, in that case you'd have to see what wire does what, power, ground, and speaker wires must go correctly.

Another couple of things you might encounter is that with several vehicles you may need to purchase what is called a dash kit made for your vehicle because the old radio may be larger than the radio you wish to put in. And as for wiring it is easier to buy a wiring harness made for your vehicle so that you don't have to cut the original wires. You will have to crimp the harness that came with the new stereo to the harness you bought for your vehicle. It's always good to see if you can find a video for your specific car as Installition could be different for other cars.

yes, unhook the battery if you do messy work and touch live wires while working. Make sure the antenna is good at the other end, but if even then it doesn't work, the radio is bad.

As I've said before, that car sat for 16 years unused. That was shot right after I got it running for the first time for my customer. Now it neither smokes or runs ragged. BUT, I use it cause it's a Show Business beginning, I like the noise and smoke, just realize, it's the BEFORE shot. The car now lives far away and is happy as a smoked clam.

Great video Scotty. You should probably mention using a wire harness adapter for connecting your new radio to your car. This way there is no splicing into the car's wire harness and you can easily remove an expensive aftermarket radio and reinstall the OEM one if you want to sell your car. You should also probably mention buying a radio adapter kit since most aftermarket radios are smaller than the OEM ones. You should also probably mention to save your OEM radio if you ever plan to sell your car since aftermarket radios usually subtract from a cars value rather than add to it.

I just wanted to provide some additional advice. The easiest way to make the connections to the factory wires is to get a wiring harness. Metra sells them and they cost between 10-20 bucks. All the wires' colors match the radio harness so all you need to do is use some crimp caps and you're set.
@scottykilmer
@scottykilmer 11 лет назад
check the wiring coming from the radio to that side, pray it's bad connectors. Cause often it's the amplifier inside the radio breaking down on one side and you'd new a new one for that

My '92 Caddy Deville has its factory installed radio with cassette player. I bought a cassette tape MP3 adapter which you insert into the tape deck then plug the dongle into the MP3 player's headphone jack. Better than CDs and if you have an old tape you want to hear, you have that option left too.

Hey scotty, I put in a $20 dual stereo from Walmart and when I turn the volume up over 10, it starts to sound all staticy and just sounds bad. But if its 10 or below it sounds fine. So i plugged my old stereo back in and it sounded fine. Is it the speakers in my car that could be causing it.

Another useful tip is that, if you don't want to cut and splice wires (as relatively easy as it is), you can buy adapters that allow you to simply plug everything in. Even Wal Mart carries these adapters and they're quite cheap.
@007Kellam

Hey Scotty, Like the video! Although most radios slide right out the front, the new one comes with keys (Usually 2 thin pieces of metal with a little bump on the end of it) and you stick those on each side and pull the radio right out. you only need to replace the entire bracket if the new radio and old radio dont have the same bracket (which I imagine was the case with this one). also, most electronics shops sell connection adaptors for those people who don't know how to solder, and realatively cheap too at only $5-$10 usually!
