I live in the Northeast where we get a good bit of snow. Do you recommend using ice and water shield on rake edge?

Yes, I would

I now no longer want to diy my own roof. A couple of friends did their roof and were going to help, they claim it is an easy task. I thoght both my roof quotes were expensive, after watching this I gladly will have the pros do it, while I sip my frosty drink sitting in a sand chair spectating. My roofer will be worth every penny.

Ya, there is definitely complicated parts to it. Nailing shingles is the easy part

My brother has been a roofer his entire life- (he's 58) He says the best way is to cover the entire roof deck with I & W shield then put down the underlayment and then the shingles/tiles He swears by this and says the roof will never leak again unless of course the deck structure is damaged and its integrity has been breeched (from a falling branch , hit by a truck etc...) when and if the roof needs to be redone,- you can just remove the tiles & underlayment & put new I& W shield directly over the old i & W shield where it necessitates it. Then new underlayment and tiles. He has been doing this since the '80's

I agree if we’re talking about tiles. Not necessarily for shingles

Great videos!!! Do You think I probably will not need to install ice and water shield around the edges of the roof Eves in the desert climate of Phoenix Arizona?
@RoofRepairSpecialist
@RoofRepairSpecialist 2 месяца назад
I don’t think there is a need in our climate zones. The reason to do that is ice dams which we don’t have

When I cap nail the underlayment down over the top of the ice and water shield should I avoid putting nails in the area where the ice and water shield is located beneath the underlayment?
@RoofRepairSpecialist
@RoofRepairSpecialist 2 месяца назад
You can put a few as needed, I’ve and water shield is self sealing, it will waterproof the nail going through it

This will be fun😢. Paid for a new roof, complete tear off, replace flashing and sheathing as needed, complete ice and water shield coverage (4 seasons). Subcontractors were short handed and took a shortcut. They didn't replace a bad piece of OSB with 2 holes in it on the garage. How complicated is this repair going to be? Brother says they might gave to replace whole side but i think they can get away with overlap and replace bad section because it is sticky. Would like to know before they come back for warranty work.

As long as they can match the shingles shouldn’t be too bad. If they tie it in properly they can do a repair in that section only.

Question: So on the eaves, you have deck defense first, then ice and water shield, then deck defense again? Just curious
@RoofRepairSpecialist
@RoofRepairSpecialist Год назад
No, in so cal we do not do ice & Water shield on the eaves. We only install them in valleys and penetrations. At the eaves we just do deck defense. You can checkout our other videos, you'll probably find a better answer.

At 1:12 you said install ice and water shield on the top of "felt", then later while you put ice and water shield on the valleys actual on the "deck", later you put felt on the water and ice shield again and cover all roofing, I confused which is proper install way to put ice and water shield on deck or on the felt? if water and ice shield on the deck, will destroy the deck while next time replace roofing and need to change the deck because the ice and water shield is too sticky?
@RoofRepairSpecialist
@RoofRepairSpecialist Год назад
We do ice and water shield directly on the deck. I agree that the ice and water shield directly on the deck makes future roofing difficult, however I do believe that is the right way of doing it.

The owens corning Ice and water shield says to do the valley first. Then do the eves. It never mentions rakes.
@RoofRepairSpecialist
@RoofRepairSpecialist 10 месяцев назад
Depending on the climate you’re in. If you have ice or snow eaves are necessary. Not sure about rakes

Would you install ice and water up the side of the concrete walls?
@RoofRepairSpecialist
@RoofRepairSpecialist 2 года назад
If you are in an area with snow, ice & freezing you should. It's the same detail used at a roof to wall junction.

Hold on a second. In your underlayment video you say to put the Ice & Water shield first. In this video you say the reverse. I do get what you meant by watching what you were doing but, that was confusing at first
@RoofRepairSpecialist

Didn't catch that. Im assuming you figured but Ice and Water first. Then Underlayment

Do the video on removing the ice and water shield after it’s been on for 20 years and it’s time to remove the old roof 😮

In this video you say to put the underlayment down FIRST & THEN install the Ice & Water shield (over the underlayment) &. then proceed doing the exact OPPOSITE? For the record the I & W shield goes down FIRST & then the underlayment. You should probably do a new video and say the correct order because it is confusing. Your video is of good quality though, just misinforming

Good catch. Yes 100% Ice and Water first
