I've done TONS of hardwood installs, but only a small handful of vinyl installs. Today I was supposed to do a small bathroom with the exact same product as this, but I chickened out because I was concerned about leaving that "floating floor gap" against the tub. Didn't know if it was safe to make it tighter. But... Thanks for giving me more confidence! It's very small room and there WILL be a T-mould at the door, so now I can see what to do. Thanks!
EVERYONE INSTALLING LVP SHOULD WATCH ALL THESE VIDEOS!! Joel is my hero. Thank you so much for all your wisdom! My floors look amazing thanks to your advice.
You without a doubt have the best tips for installing vinyl flooring. I watch a lot of videos as I'm doing the install now. again, thanks, and God Bless.
Thank you! I'm remodeling an RV and lack $ to pay contractor to install the plank flooring I bought, so I need to learn how to do it myself. You're video taught me how to deal with installing floor around my small tub/shower : )
hadn't started my home project floor because of small details like this that can make or break the install. SUPER helpful and precise without a bunch of blah, blah, blah.... just in time.... Would've also like to see the silicone install. THANKS!!
This video is 4 years old and still helpful I'm doing my bathroom/kitchen now and don't want a transition piece in the door and because of your video I think I have a solid plan on how to tackle it
What is your solution for covering the expansion gap at the tub? Would a silicone caulk be acceptable or would that hinder expansion/contraction? Great video with wonderful tips and guidance. Thank you.
I've done laminate floors, tiled floor in bathrooms as well as shower walls. Being my first time using 'waterproof' vinyl up to our newly installed stand/sit shower enclosure I felt I should check out what I'm up against. Your video was the only one demonstrating what I needed to see. Thanks , you gave me some peace of mind.
I just finished my first laminate project and your videos helped me out a lot. Thanks brother! It's also awesome that you use this platform to minister for him!
Excellent! Installing vinyl plank flooring for the first time in four rooms which include the bathroom, kitchen and hallway. Add in a brick fireplace. ALL of your videos have been very helpful! Thank you.
RU-vid is a blessing. OMG hahaha this is nuts. We are doing the flooring in our basement and I was freaking out about how I will do the flooring to the tub so it looks good and this video automatically popped in my feed without even searching 😅😅
Answered my question perfectly - how to work with the space near the tub, narrowing it to 1/8 " from 1/4", using vinyl plank. Thanks, you saved me a couple of hours!
I have watched a number of your videos. In a word, Outstanding! Getting ready to install 1200 feet of LVT, have never done it before, and with your videos have total confidence it is within my skill set . Thank You
I recently installed LVP in the whole house it turned out great after watching many of your videos, so thank you so much for the helpful hints and guidance!! I am now disgusted with the cabinets in the kitchen and bathroom and my next project will be bathroom vanity replacements. I’d spoken with a local guy who said not to install the LVP under kitchen cabinets due to expansion/contraction… Do you have and suggestions for bathroom vanities? Can I install the full floor in the bathroom and place a vanity on top of it?
Very helpful, I am about to lay vinyl flooring in my bathrooms for the first time as a beginner. Your videos are confidence boosters because you explain everything I feel like you're in the room with me. 👍🏿👌🏿✊🏿
I installed vinyl plank throughout my home, it's one of the greatest home products out there and is easy to lay. Just a suggestion if you can afford it get the thicker mil, it's worth the extra money.
Great Vlog! Thank you. You answered my questions about vinyl vs. laminate and how to install it up against the tub plus some other tips that I didn't know about. Thanks again!
great video, learned a lot. my construction man wants to put quarter round over the vinyl plank up against the shower base. The planks dont meet tightly and even a 1/4 in gap. I never heard of quarter round against the tub or shower base,,,,help.
Joe, we are doing LVP throughout our new house, hoping to not need any transitions. Our guest bathroom will have the planks running parallel to the tub, as in this video, but our master bath will have the planks perpendicular to the tub and to the separate shower. Would your instructions be any different, other than making sure the butt ends are aligned as perfectly as possible? Thank you.
Thank you so much for all your outstanding videos. About to do my first project, a bathroom. If I start against the bathtub working towards the door (T-joint there) do I need to do anything special against the tub, other than some silicone caulking? Can I go tight against the tub in my case?
Thank you so much Joe for all the valuable insight. I’m getting ready for my first vinyl project and I’ve been watching all your videos. I got a lot of the tools you recommended and agree these are way better than anything at the box stores. Wish me luck but with your help I know it’ll turn out great.
Thanks for being such a great teacher. I am going to tackle installing all the LVP in my house which includes the bathroom. I will use all of your hints!
Shouldn't there be a gap between the tub and flooring? It seems doing it the way you show could make it prone to buckling. I'm curious to hear your response. I have seen others use quarter round glued to the tub to hide the gap. Definitely not as clean-looking as your solution, but that would allow expansion of the floor without potential for buckling.
I just finished most of my house in vinyl planks. It came out beautiful thanks to you. So many helpful tips. I had to go round a wall in the kitchen. I matched up great. I was so happy. I give you 1/2 the credit. I couldn't have done it without you. God Bless.
Thanks for sharing your expertise. I learned a lot. Question though...... Can I install vinyl planking over top of existing linoleum flooring? What about that metal band along the tub where the linoleum meets the tub. Can I install over top of that? Thank you sir!
Yes you can install over a vinyl floor. If that metal Edge sticks up above the floor you can cut that out. Just cut an inch back from the tub with a utility knife or an oscillating saw and then pry out that metal you will then have to fill the gap with some floor fill
Your videos are great! We now have a beautiful new Coremax plank floor in our kitchen. Had to get a little creative in spots but with suggestions from your vids we got it done nice and tight (where it should be)! Thanks for the info!!
Thanks for this video, very helpful. As others have mentioned, we'd love to see the finished effect with the caulk in place. Also wondering will the caulk have enough stability to hold the tub side of those planks down? Around the walls there's baseboard trim to do that job, but the tub edge doesn't.
Joel...you are the man! Have spent the whole morning watching your laminate install videos, so good. Quick question, I am super tempted to carry on our laminate flooring (NOT Vinyl) into our bathroom just to continue the look of the flooring from the rest of the main floor. If I was to glue or silicone each joint in the bathroom, can I get away with using this product in the bathroom? Somehow I feel that if a board or two did happen to get damaged from water after a couple of years, I could even just replace those few boards...? Sorry for the novel here lol! Take care!
Wow...you are an incredible instructor! I love your technique! I do wish you would have shown the caulk along the tub and finished product, but alas, I did learn a lot from this video and appreciate the time you took in creating it.
Hi! When you are measuring your 10 boards for your cheat sheet you have tape measure start at 1 inch. Is that lined up to include male end or just the board? It is hard to tell for sure. At the other end it seems to stop at flooring edging. Like you said a fraction off x 30 boards down the line can add up to a big gap. You are amazing. I feel like I can do this now.
Have you done this on a older tub with the contours at the each end? That is what I have at my house. What are your thoughts on the waterproof vinyl planks that have MDF/cork cores. They are promoting them for bathroom use. Should this only be done with solid vinyl?
Great video! I’m considering renovating my bathroom with a tiled tub/shower and plank flooring. Should I use a paintable waterproof membrane on the subfloor prior to installation? Also... should I lay the flooring before or after tiling the walls?
You don't need to apply paintable membrane on the floor unless you would want to. You can run a bead of silicone around all the edges filling the Expansion Joints this will stop water from flowing through the gap. If you think you can cover and protect the floor then it would be easiest install the plank then the tile on top of the plank to get the best look. However you can install the tile first and then leave 1/8 inch gap between the tile and the plank and fill that Gap with silicone that matches either the tile or the plank. This is the way I use most
Great video! Maybe I missed it, but what is the reason for planing the joint prior to applying the glue? Does that simply allow the boards to come together easier, knowing that they'll be permanently bonded?
