That's what I was thinking of doing with my stairs also. My stairs use 2x10x35 3/4" treads and 1x8 risers nailed to the back of the threads. I need to replace the treads and risers so I'll cover them before I install. Since the metal nosings are 72" with the holes evenly spaced, I just cut from opposite ends, so I don't even need to be concerned with hole spacing. They will be not more than 1/4" from symmetrical all the way down, and I can replace one if necessary by simply cutting to length and the holes will line up perfectly. I was thinking screws, but I will consider using the nails that came with them like you did.

My stairs were rounded for carpet too. As long as they aren't too round you should be good. If they are too round, you may need to cut them back a bit to square them up. Gluing them on with pl premium or similar helps too

Just so I understand because I have the same thing I'm troubleshooting. This nosing is essentially to hide and reinforce the seam of the lvp planks joining where the riser and tread meet? I installed glue down lvp flooring, no nose, 90 degree angle stairs and need a way to finish the edge. Nosing is so costly!

The nosing is just to finish off the step. You are pretty limited in your options for less than what the metal costs, unfortunately

@BrentDarlington
@BrentDarlington 3 года назад
You can use screws but they don't look as nice but won't work their way out if there is movement in the stairs. Yes, I leave the nosing on. You can different sizes depending on how thick the nose is. The stairs are designed with the nosing to get the right tread depth. If you cut it off the tread could be too shallow.

I'm getting LVP on my stairs. So far, the carpet has been removed and there are 2x10 steps. I was told that stair tread boards (nosing) are needed in order to install the LVP. Can I add this to the bare 2x10 steps and then have them install the vinyl?
@BrentDarlington
@BrentDarlington 4 года назад
This type of nosibg goes on after. There are types that can go on before the flooring but I dont think that will solve your problem. You don't have a nosing? You need to attach a 1x2 to the front of the step?
@raekwonw
@raekwonw 4 года назад
@@BrentDarlington the stairs are not flush, so there is a piece on the 2x10 that comes out slightly but it is not rounded. I was told by Empire installers that the nosing needs to be curved/rounded in order for the LVP to be installed. I'm just trying to come up with an affordable solution to to make it possible for them to install without me spending a ton of money to redo the steps or replace 14+ stair treads. I thought maybe if I put this metal nosing on the edge of the 2x10s then they could do the LVP.

what about if I used this method on Laminate stairs?
@BrentDarlington
@BrentDarlington 4 года назад
If it is a floating floor, I would use a nosing made for floating floors that allow for movement. This style nosing would work fine for areas that don't need to "float" like the steps. Where large areas of the flooring ends, it might work if you drill larger holes through the laminate only, after you drill a pilot hole for the nail.

Please be safe. I think Vinyl, Laminate, and hardwood are all dangerous on stairs. I know carpets are dirty. I think using a easily replaceable carpet runner may be the best way to go. You only have to fall down from a slippery stairs once to realize carpet is the safest option. Since permanent carpet is too hard to replace therefore I recommend a runner option.

@@raymondchow8722 I always recommend carpet as well. The nosing that come with this stuff is no good. Sits too high, comes loose. Hardwood is the worst of them for slipping. This metal nosing is pretty good as far as safety but doesn't look great. Looks too commercial .
