Hi everyone! This video shows the way how I wired and hung ceiling fans for an exterior project. Two fans were wired and hung on ceiling joists outside of the home. If you are unfamiliar with electrical work please contact an electrician! This video is for an idea that you may have for your house and shows the steps ad how simple this project is! Thanks for watching and please don't forget to subscribe!!!
** I referred to some material as "AS I TALKED ABOUT BEFORE". Please see the "How to add exterior outlets" for my references. **
Thanks again for taking the time! Cheers!!!

Looks great, and with a brighter bulb installed that’s all the light you need. ru-vid.comUgkxWF88GpljEn-0o34vtLFazEQ5h5Q33SjU As far as ease of installation- this was my first ceiling fan and it took about 3 hours because I had no idea what I was doing and also it’s helpful to have a second set of hands and a magnetic drill bit. Works great.

Good example of what not to do. If you don't know what your doing call a electrician . Way too many code / safety violations.

*Great unit that’s easy to install and use. It’s relatively quiet compared to window units and **Fastly.Cool** , and it cools down our whole living room, side room and bathroom; which is a large space for any unit to cool.*

Thanks for sharing. I'm not a certified electrician by trade, but by experience. I'm certain you have read many negative comments -- and some comments appear to be from folks who actually never did this level of install and are quick to criticize you. Here are a few things I would have done differently ensuring I meet code requirements and to make my job easier: 1) I would use THHN through the conduits; 2) I think this is where you planned things wrong: The conduits could have run parallel to the joists. Where you have the junction box, I would have replaced the junction box that comes with two 1/2 inch perforated cutout outlets. Run the conduits from there above the junction box through the ceiling joists next to the edge of the wall then you can run the long conduit parallel to the joist then add another 90 degrees for the ceiling fan brace box. This way, no electrical wires from the ceiling fan brace box will be exposed; 3) Ensure you install an outdoor-rated fan; and 4) I would ensure enough cable length is left for termination. Hope this helps on your next project.

Come on guys. Never drill holes in horizontal load bearing rafters or trusses. You literally just weakened the entire structure. Especially on runs that long. In my opinion. You have no idea what you are doing. And making this video people will believe that you do and that can be dangerous for that are unaware. And your electrical is wrong too.

Better to get outdoor rated ceiling fans. Home Decorators Collection Merwry is not rated for outdoor use and can void a warranty if you install them outdoors. Blades are plastic so they wouldn’t warp from humidity, but some other parts can rust.

Aside from the issues that others have pointed out, you have voided the UL listing on the fan box as well as the support bar by drilling the hole larger and altering the product when not explicitly allowed by manufacturers instructions. Not to mention drilling the support out and weakening the structure could be a liability and safety issue, especially when supporting a fan. The product warranty was also voided when it was drilled. Finally, the conductor passing through the bored hole without any bushing is a possible violation of National Electric Code.

I'm curious why you didnt use a saddle box that screws straight into the stud or a pancake box? I'm thinking about either running a 2x8 piece perpendicular to the joist as blocking or turning it where the flat (face) of it sides even to give more surface area

Great demo but id have used those PVC cutters that ratchet in as you squeeze the handle or a miter saw and clean off any burs. I'm thinking bout putting an outdoor fan on my back deck and i wana see how much of a pain it is first. I do have an outdoor light like you did so I could remove it and tap into that power source.

Conduit is overkill...just run UF wire and make your taps up in each fan box... I've never seen the covers of metal boxes used like that with the pipe..! How are you supposed to access the box later..? When you cut the wire it looks like you cut it at just three inches..! REAL electricians cut at least 6 inches... This video is a joke...

i gotta decide if I want to get pull chains or ones with remotes. I'll need 4 fans and should be able to use one remote for all 4 fans ( same brand) but turn each on as I want and not all at the same time. I bought one before that had a 3 spd switch and went through 2 switches I believe.

I have 2 outside lights under my balcony and just bought 2 of the Costco hunter 54" outdoor fans with remote on sale . My question is there's only one switch to turn on the lights how would I go about turning on the fan or lights at the same times or just the fan with only one switch that's on the inside of my sliding door don't I need to have two switches one for just the light and one for fan or can I just use the remote ?
@AlexQuiroz
@AlexQuiroz 7 лет назад
Hi Dj Ohmarty! If I'm understanding the question correctly, you have 2 fans and want to power them off of one switch... that would be exactly what this video shows. The switch that was inside of this house was only using one switch that was originally for the outside light. The box that made the conduit go into two separate directions towards each fan was where you have to split the wires as the power will continue to both fans. All you need is one switch for the wires to power both fans. That hot wire will be your power source to both.... I really hope I was able to answer your question....

We have a very small patio. An electrician attached a box to the center of that patio ceiling, and it was exactly on that wooden stud. He also attached there a small box (Steel), which is sitting on a couple of screws. His idea was that because it is attached to the sturdy wood it will support the fan. I doubt that box is sufficient for the heavy fan. I could change the box, but my question is how to attach any box to that stud? Maybe with some braces (going around that stud), if there is not much space for that thick rod on which the box is sitting. Or the box for the heavy fan (which is 48 in Havana, Hampton Beach) should be located between the studs only, so you can install the supporting rod? Thank you for the film.

@@glasshalfempty1984 It's probably up to the AHJ. The link you reference implies only where NM is going to be subject to damaged, if he would have drilled through floor 6 inches or more, for example. But this is a highly debated subject regardless of interpretation. However, the fact this is being installed in a damp location and violates the NM application/ article 334.12 (B) 4. The appropriate cable or wire should have been used, not NM.
