I hate when people make negative comments to his videos this guy put his heart and soul into his videos to show people how to do things so the DIY folks and whom ever want good honest information. It is really sad, I think your videos are all great.
Honestly he showing people show to do everything wrong. Whats the point of a diy if u have to end up paying for a professional to take it off and re instal it
I just started working at a roofing supplies company, and these videos have taught me what I need to know to understand product and how it works! Thanks for the videos!
You're a great teacher. My husband and I started a roofing company together, he's been in the business for 5 years and I know next to nothing about the whole process, so this was really helpful! Thank you :)
This video series is great. I took a side job doing shingle work for a friends parents and I’ve only had framing experience, this video has given me great confidence. Thank you!
I have learned so much from you sir. From remodeling bathrooms, funding the retaining wall, building the shed, roof, and now this. I cant thank you enough for your help. Thank you very much.
As a home owner, I cannot afford a roof replacement. So this helps me make small repairs as I go. For this coming year, I will replace the whole roof top since the cedar shingles are rotten. Thank you for making this video series for the non roofing common folk. Thank you.
hello the starter course is also to hold the first shingle down in times of heavy winds and hurricane the strip of tar supposed to be to the very end/edge by the drip edge so that it can be effective in holding the ends of the first course down. thank you for all of your videos I always watch them..... I love them!
Jamon Rudon I’m understanding the tar eventually heats up sealing a nail ..and in the video the 3 tab shingle’s tar line is bout 6-8 inches up .. so your say we should cut the 3 tabs off till the tar line is flush with the edge ?
@@franciscocharco2291Not flush with the edge, but an inch or 2 up from the edge is fine. The way it's done in the video is leaving 6-8 inches of shingle just able to flap in the wind.
Your starter strips should have the tabs cut off and then they should be installed with the tar strip at the bottom edge of the roof. You do this so there is a tar strip to "glue" down the bottom of the first row of shingles.
Thank you for this video. Helped me to redo the side of my house that have shingles. Haven't had a scafolding, but I used 2 old painting scaffolding put opposite on top of each other . I did 1/4 this year and next year will do rest. I am an older woman and your videos where the best info.
Shannon you are the best how to tutorial on youtube. You do this job correctly the way its suppose to be done. Listen to shannon people and you will have no problems with your roof after installing your new roof shingles.
"Never break the silence, if its not to improved It" (Beethoven) I'm 64 (not a roofer)started working when I was 13 years old, always enjoyed GOOD tips and how to improved and refresh my knowledge Thank you for your time and tips.
I'm just starting this career path and you are very informative and patient. I'm sure you can really move when you get in the groove. Thank you for taking the time to make these videos. You got my like and subscribe. Keep up the good work of giving tips and tricks of the trade.
Shannon, thanks very much for doing these videos and sharing your knowledge and wisdom. I used your videos often to do a complete re-roof of a detached garage. Greatly appreciated!
Your tutorial is very informative and really clear. I love it. Learning a lot from you, taking notes as I’m watching. I was just given an appraisal for shingles replacement on my small backyard shed - $700 Canadian. Forget it. A small job like that would take a professional a couple of hours. It will take me a day, but I can do it with this tutorial. Thank you for the great lesson.
I've done some roofing and now my roof needs replacing. I got and estimate of $10,000 and that gave me a lot of courage and motivation to tear off and replace my roof with laminate shingles. I'm 68 and in good shape and believe I can do it. I'm still planning how I will go about taking it one section at a time. I will also use some kind of fall protection. I like you vid. Very helpful.
Frank youre gunna fall off the roof or your asshole is gunna fall out from the bending over. Just spend the money my guy. Your old ass back will thank u.
Get atleast one helper especially to tear off the old roof, and hand you shingles while you nail them down would make it much easier and much less moving for you.
I just paid 10,000 today for a new roof. It’s not getting any cheaper. Did you ever replace your own roof? There’s a lot more to it than just laying down shingles.
I'd just pay someone to tear it off install it myself if I was you order the material from a roofing yard so they load it for you once you got the old roof off it's only like 100 for them to load it but unless you've installed 100s of roofs its probably going to come out like shit
I've done roofing before but forgot alot of the details and ur video is very specific helping me prepare for the task at hand. Thank u very much. Well done video
I see negative comments on almost everything I've watched on youtube, everything from music, especially political which I never comment on, construction, and everything else under the sun, I don't know why but there's negative wherever you go. I have experience in construction but my main skill is residential painting and drywall, I've been doing both for 20 years now but like to learn different things and like watching experienced people so I can add it to my own styles. I've been in the industry long enough to be able to see if someone knows what they're talking about, I don't know carpentry very well, did a little concrete, did a few roofs, not unattended though, I love learning things and totally respect these people taking the time to show all of us how they do it, nobody does it the same but may know what they're talking about and realized this over 20 years ago. Thank you so much for your training us.
ive been roofing for 13 years now. watching these videos are still interesting. :] even though i just finished a roof this afternoon.. whats wrong with me lol
mcbirdythebirdy123 haha nothing is wrong with u I worked on cars for a while and on remodeling kitchens houses and u always learn something new even if u are master splinter u still will learn something new😀👍😀👏😀👏😀👏😀👏😀👏😀👏😀👏😀👏😀👏😀👏
Thank you so much for your great informative way in explaining your video. It's so relieving to finally come across a diy video, on installing roof shingles, which doesn't begin with a maddening worker who appears to be in a race for his life. Lol thank you very much
This guy is great at what he does! He didn't make these videos to wow anyone. It's educational rather than just entertaining. If you don't want to learn then go watch something else. 😊
Only thing I would change is the starter strip. Cut off the 3 shingles and flip the shingle right side up, so you have the glue strip at the edge of the roof, so the first row of shingles has something to seal to as well.
Just buy a couple bundles of starters, one bundle goes a long way, you're absolutely right about needing that tar line at that bottom course, during high winds, you'll definitely have some shingles blowing off..
Sir I have followed you for quite a while and appreciate the knowledge and more so your patience on teaching or the passing of some knowledge to us retards in this crazy fast world and especially our sensitive society. Your a proper man sir in every way and much appreciate you.
If you think about why he made the video it would be clear. Hes showing those that are not experienced how to roof. Hes not showing journeyman / foreman how to be faster. If he would of made the video that way i would be lost. So many neg comments. Its easy to pick apart peoples videos from the comfort of your home. I dont think most of the people talking crap would dare post a video of themselves, too scared of what people might point out. I enjoyed the video, great work bro, Thanks.
he nails in the wrong place so he is showing ppl how to do it wrong, on the west coast his roofs would leak bad. placement of nails is very important haha you are to dumb or have never roofed so you would not understand this hahaha
Teaching people how to do it wrong is not helping. Simply not using an actual starter strip will void the shingle warranty and cause the edge tabs to lift.
Hey Shannon, I am a fellow " All Around " contractor out here in Cincinnati Ohio. I just wanted to express my gratitude for the FREE SERVICE you're providing for us. A simple thumbs up isn't enough. Dude I have been watching your videos for years. I have been a salesman my whole life, but I learn extremely fast once I'm showed how to do anything, once. I have had so many jobs where I would land it and not have a clue how to really do it. Then I'd watch and study your videos on it and by the time I get out there I look and perform like a pro, EVERYTIME!!! You break everything down as to how to do it and why it needs to be done that way which is all I need to master anything. Just wanted to say thank you and keep up the good work Shannon
Thanks Shannon! This is absolutely the best and most professional roofing video I've found. Excellent presentation and delivery with clear and calm audio. Excellent detail. You cover the details that other videos gloss over. Kudos as well to your videographer. Excellent framing of the subject, including closeups, and little camera shake. I was impressed with how little wind noise there was, considering how the trees were swaying in the wind. Thank you for the time and effort that everyone put into this tutorial. Your information line indicates that you are located in Saskatchewan. I live in Oregon, but I watched your video, because I'm leaving next week to go to Bruno, Saskatchewan to help a cousin put new roofs on two small farm buildings. I've done a couple of roofs before, but it's been a long time and your video was a great way to brush up on the latest requirements.
Thanks very much for your comments. We try our best to deliver more information than most other people in this space and with the best video and sound results as well. It is nice when we receive comments like yours , noticing all the little things we strive for. We are in Sask. and I hope you enjoy your time here with your cousin. Its been really rainy and stormy as of the last week or so But the heat is supposed to hit now again. I would suggest that you will encounter our Saskatchewan mosquitos ! LOL
We always cut the tabs off and put the tar strip on the bottom for our starters, also, we have to use webbing and roof cement "bull" on top of the drip edge.
Roofing code is different in every area depending on what the weather is like or how they feel that day. When I saw him start putting down grip guard I was amazed the code allows him to just Throw a shingle the wrong way as a starter strip. I was sure they where going to at least get antsy about a tar bead to prevent wind lifting up the first row..bunch of commies at the code dept. In my area theyre like throw one upside down i dont care. Underlayment? yeah, were not saying you need it. But youtubes and googles seems inundated with shingle corporations trying to upsell you purpose built starter strip. You here to teach me or sell me a bunch of bunk? Thats why I will never use schluter and spit on them. Theyre out here clogging up my tubes trying to sell bull. But. If you built it like you where about to die in a snow storm hurricane. Im saying you upcoded it and it would probably last longer..maybe..I guess. Since the 3 tab shingle weather rots and needs replacement no matter what you do.
I deliver / yard guy at a roofing provider. A customer asked me why the sale guy sold him IKO Marathon which is a 3 tab shingle as opposed to a leading edge and I couldnt answer that question for him today. Now I know the difference. Thanks, Im going to watch onto the next video to see how the hip and ridge or shadow ridge shingles work. Nice work explaining it for a dummy truck driver like me.
i asked the sales guy what the difference is and he was clear in his explanation I just didnt understand i guess. The leading edge bundles are 120 feet of shingles and cost a lot more, and the marathon is 60 foot and cost a lot less. also looks like the 3 tab shingle your using is flat as opposed to the main shingle.
Hi I'm a single mother trying to safe some money on my house. With your video I was able to follow your step on how to install shingles and I did it, if I have a chance I'll post before and after pic Thank You
Ole plumb bob chalk line lol? Damn good remodeler/carpenter/teacher for sure!!! I'm a framer and did windows/doors in the past, but always wanted to learn the right way to roof!! Sweet!!
i like to cut the shingle in half, leaving the tar strip on, and use that for my starter strip..that way the tar is on the bottom by the drip edge holding down the shingle by the edge of the roof
Your way is correct. the tar strip must be at the bottom to prevent blow off. Cut the tabs off, or more easily, buy a starter strip. Read the manufacturer's instructions. The tabs being up the roofline can also trap water from flowing down. It also causes the first shingle to be double thick at the top making a ridge. I am not a roofing person, I just consulted the shingle manufacturer's website (GAF) for the correct installation procedure. Remember to consult your local building codes which are very specific depending on geographical location.
I made the mistake of starting before watching Shannon's video: totally screwed up because the manufacturers instructions were so complicated. Had to rip it off, watch Shannon's video and now the job looks great. I should remember to start with HouseImprovements! Thanks Shannon.
Thank you for the details on the flashing! I see so many roofers pin the flashing down on top of the felt along the bottom. I’ve repaired a lot of rotted sheeting and facia boards due to this.
Bryan Sissell because the I&W IS, supposed to go under the metal at the bottom edge per the manufacture specifications along with the gable ends. He’s doing it wrong. With the way he’s done it the ice can back up under the metal from the gutter and get into the facia. If it runs down from above then it would simply run under the metal and out into the gutter if installed correctly. And this is not.
“... simply run under the metal and out into the gutter ...” soaking the unflashed facia edge beneath the metal in the process and resulting in the rot at the bottom edge that Bryan has repeatedly seen. The video does show the flashing going on top of the paper on the outside edges of the roof.
I initially had the same thought others had about cutting the tabs off the three-tab shingles for the starter strip; then I remembered that architectural shingles have the tar strip on the bottom lower edge, so they should seal down just fine.
Just watch part 2 of the roofing video Eric been a while since I did roofing couldn't remember the Drip rail sequence. I like this fellas straightforward no nonsense no theatrics approach. Yet he is not dry meaning that I stay interested in this 20 minute videos. Bought 101 year old house. Lady attorney waving around paper saying it and appraisal for more than twice what it was bidding for. Then at closing she couldn't produce it and said there were no appraisals! Already committed to buy the house by then hear it I've often said we could have our own RU-vid channel while doing this house the detached garage is what we're roofing and I actually use five quarter boards treated. You know what to use for flooring a deck. I use that to replace repair of oak lap board underlayment of the old garage they are the same thickness roughly 1 in parrot the old house is made of oak all the way through. It's only saving grace and probably why it's still standing. The foundation is interesting. It's been redone to a certain point. No real support throughout the center of the structure throughout the crawl space. What is there just loose and beginning to roll out. So I hope this fella has a few more videos on things other than roofing and his approach remains the same. Oh yeah one is side note I actually have solid oak 2x10 real dimensional lumber for floor joist. The walls are made by oak 2x4s that really measure 2 inches by 4 inches. Anybody want to do a RU-vid on this house? We're still putting in the piers in the crawl space. Fortunately I can still remember some of this stuff growing up around it and thankful for RU-vid. Judging from this one video of this site on one stage roofing I don't really thankful for this guy. A jack of all trades definitely needs coaching along the way because I am truly now a master even one trade hear it thank you for putting out this video
Never let a roofer tell you you need new sheating if you have individual boards. The individual boards extend the life of shingles by allowing some air through and dissipation of heat. You may need to replace some of the boards but never allow the to replace with plywood unless the wood is in bad shape. Just go with a shingle that allows for it.
I'm sick of the idiots making negative comments . We all don't have to work by the same system. The main concern is being sure that we all follow the safety code so we don't have to worry about home inspectors etc... geesh!
Orta Blood amen!💯 every person is going to have their own specific way of doing it to their liking and at least he seems to take the criticism in stride
All good information for a professional, quality roof that will last the life of the shingle warranty. I roofed my home myself at age 64, two years ago and it's the last full roof I intend to do in my lifetime, so it needed to be done right and I saved about twelve thousand dollars. Last week I was watching the builder of three new homes on my street that will be valued just north of one million dollars each when they are sold. No drip edge / No ice dam / No metal valley flashings / No starter course of shingles / No underlayment / and I don't know what the stuff was that he squeezed around the stack vents. They just pneumatic nailed the shingles straight onto the 3/8" thick OSB strand board decking. The shingle manufacturer usually warranties the shingles for at least 25 years if it is installed according to their recommendations. There won't be any warranty payout for these roofs. I'll just chuckle a little when the new home owners are re-roofing in 10 years or less.
@@yemidaramola1887 The first hurdle in stripping off the old roof. I had three layers of singles, the first layer dating back to the 1930's. Plan and pray for a few days without rain to strip the roof and install the waterproof underlayment so you have a minimum waterproof roof before the real fun begins. A dumpster in the driveway is your best friend to dispose of all the debris. A cheap magnetic broom to pick up all the nails from your property is a wise investment. Mine, (1800 sq. ft.) took 5 days until completion but the savings equaled a very well paid week.
Instead of chuckling, why not tell the home owners what the roofer did and save them from additional problems. That would be the neighborly thing to do.
Good Video Shannon i just installed the GAF WeatherGuard - ROLL was Very Heavy , is Mineral infused , the Plastic Backing is Very Slippery and the TEMP was HOT about 25c , my shed is 12x10 Roof Pitch 4/12 - When Hot the Backing is Tar Like - just as Sticky as RAT Trap Sticky Pads , i did it also on the Gable Ends with the GAF Blue Felt pad in the Center
when you nail your architectural shingles mind the next layout so your nail doesn't end up under a seam on the next course, For instance if you have a seven inch staircase stagger, avoid nailing within three inches of the stagger , sink a nail on the end and three inches in then about eight inches from that for the next nail. @ @ @ @ @ @ Also there is no need to put so many nails in your starter as you will be nailing right on top of those nails for your first course. Just enough to hold it from moving before you put the first course over it.
I could write a novel in regards to how his methods are. I mean, every single bundle of shingles outlines the install expectations. I like how he spent time on chalking a line to supposedly get an overhang, in which I would have popped a line for a 1 " overhang for the starter, in which should have had the tabs cut off to enable the adhesive to be with the gutter apron for the first row of 3d's to have something to seal to apposed to now having approx 5" or so that the wind will easily get under, besides that, giving your starter the inch overhang right from the beginning, you could then simply bump your shingles off that overhang in the eves, but then you need to be aware that the starter is wide enough to clear your nail line on the 3d's as three tabs are different sizes... and a major reason for starter is to ensure your first shingle row has something protecting its seams underneath. Ill stop now, I guess its the perfectionist in me along with knowing customers pay a premium for our installs, and things like leaving on the old gutter apron disables the fact that you cant sell the homeowner a complete brand new roofing system, your installing a 30+ year laminate, but leaving on old gutter apron that my guess has been on for probably around 15-20 yrs would cause me to not sleep. And not to mention with a nail pattern like that, you look like your gonna have seams on top of/too close to nail heads, and that is a big no no.
as a professional roofer for 25 years i would recommend a bead of mastic around the perimeter of the roof as well as in between the starter strip and the first course.
I thought one of the reasons for installing a starter strip was to have the adhesive strips close to the leading edge of the roof. This is to aid in securing the front edge of the overlaying first course and prevent possible wind lift. Here he's placing the whole starting shingle with the adhesive strips 6-7 inches away from the roof edge defeating that purpose. Why wouldn't you cut the starter shingle in half lengthwise so that the adhesive edge can be placed close to the roof edge?? feel like I'm taking crazy pills.
you are supposed to lay the starter course face down so the back of the shingle is facing up when making it out of 3 tab. you lay the face of it on the roof, he just turned the face 180 degrees, upside down.someone probably told him along time ago to lay the starter strip upside down, meaning face down, but he heard it as turn it 180 degrees and he has just ran with that bad info. there are two adhesive tar strips on a 3 tab shingle, one across the middle of the face and another at the bottom on the back. if you lay a 3 tab starter strip face down the tar strip at the bottom along your drip edge adheres the bottom of your first course. he definitely did that wrong.
Thanks for the videos Shannon. One question. When you start your bottom row over the start row, shouldn't the first shingle be halved so the ends don't line up with the ends of the starter shingles?
+Timothy Wilson They need to be staggered yes. In our case the 3Tabs we used as starters were 3" shorter than the finish shingles so we kind if had that already. I should have mentioned it though, thanks for catching that.
When my roof was replaced about 4 years ago, they used GAF shingles. They cut the starter shingle so the asphalt strip was near the bottom. That helped the shingle to stay down. better during heavy wind. I live in SC and although where I live I don't get hurricane winds but we do get some strong winds from the storms as they run up the coast. JS
