How to install Subframe Connectors in a 1966 Mustang

I've been wanting to install Subframe Connectors for a while, but most of the options I've found were Weld-On style, and that's not something I can do right now. CJ Pony Parts has recently released a Bolt-On option (that is fully weldable) and this is perfect for the DIY guys who don't have the equipment or experience to weld on the other bars out there. This was relatively easy to install and most Mustang owners with basic hand tools can install these Connectors.

The car is a 1966 Mustang Coupe with a factory V8 and T5 transmission.
Shot with GoPro Hero 8 with the Media Mod, edited on Davinci Resolve 16.

This video saved me at LEAST 2 hours. Slicing, dicing and bending - all anticipated. Thank you!

Can’t wait to see what you got next. Also when I get all my parts (disks brakes, master cylinder, front coil overs, new control arms, new sway bars, rear leaf springs and shocks, carpet and seats, and new carb) definitely you know just coming over so we can knock them all out of the park XD

That's a long list of parts to do all at once, good luck!! :)

@@AndyKruseChannel you are honest and don't sugarcoat the process. Makes you very relatable and likeable. People really enjoy you.

Nice when the second one goes in much easier.

Thanks for video, I've been eyeing those myself because I don't have a welder. I was under the impression you had to have weight on the suspension when you install frame connectors.

There is a possibility that installing these with the car sitting on the tires might be a pinch better as the chassis is under "normal" stress in that scenario. My lifting the car, you put stress in a different spot due to the pick-up points. That being said, the rear axle was being lifted when I did the car, emulating how the rear would "sit" as the weight of the rear was still on the suspension. However, I still had the front supported by the crossframe bar under the engine, so the front suspension was not loaded.

Awesome video. I'm debating a rear sway bar to get a little bit better handling.

Hi Andy. Great work. Love your videos. What are the part numbers from CJ Pony for the frame supports? Cheers

I have a 65 that has a crunched floor support because someone used it as a jack point. I think a better place is the pinch weld at the edge of the car.

There's a lot of debate about the correct location for lift points on these classic mustangs, but the frame rails tend to be the more recommended location as the body of the car is secured to the frame rails, along with all the other heavy components of the car. By lifting on the pinch welds (on these cars), you're lifting the body and all the major and heavy components are essentially pulling down on the body at that point. This has the potential to cause more damage than someone incorrectly lifting the car on the frame rails. But, if it works for you..... :)

Funny how your doing everything I have planned for my 66 haha. Gives me a look into the future at how much work each component is going to take. Question, how far down from the floor pan do the subframe connector sit? I have the side exit exhaust like a GT350 and don't know if it will clear. Thanks!!
@AndyKruseChannel

Awesome, now you'll know if parts fit and what doesn't work well with your plan. :) The braces are essentially level with the front subframe braces that sit below the floor pan. If your side exit exhaust is routed just past the stock frame, these braces will likely interfere with your exhaust.

Brandon, for what it’s worth I have the TCP subframe on mine and it would not allow for the side exit exhaust that I wanted. I’m not sure that any brand would work well for side exit since I think they all end about the same place.

Would be curious what the stiffness increase actually is. I

Good question, but I don't know. The improvement is subtle and not everyone will notice the tiny bit of flex that's not happening after the bars are installed. It goes in the category of "cumulative improvements" since a combination of suspension and chassis upgrades can together make the car handle much better. :)
@VegasRT500

Did you notice any changes in handling or ride quality after you installed the subframe connectors.
@AndyKruseChannel
@AndyKruseChannel 2 года назад
Not really, but that's mostly because I sold the car not too long after I installed them, so I didn't get much seat time with. However, I will be installing a set on my new car, I just don't know how soon I can get to them as I've got quite a few parts in queue to get installed already. :)

There is zero improvement without welding the subframe connectors in place. Literally zero.

Have you noticed a difference on the road while driving?
@AndyKruseChannel
@AndyKruseChannel 2 года назад
Not really because of all the other suspension parts I installed. I'm sure it's doing its job, but this late in the build its hard to tell the difference for each new part.
