►Whether you just purchased your first set of wheel studs, or it's time to replace your old ones, there is only one correct way of installing them, and it's often referred to as the "double nut" method.
Although many wheel studs accept hex keys to tighten them into the wheel hub, this isn't the correct method. The new style of wheel studs that we sell from Motorsports Hardware don't feature a hex head and require you to use the double nut method to tighten them to their torque specification.
In this video, Gareth Foley shows us how to install screw-in wheel studs using the double nut method on his very own BMW E92 M3.

I used a good quality 5 mm Alen socket and had no troubles at all. I think the guys that are having them break are using cheap Alen sockets. Also it would have been a nice tech tip for some guys to let people know what to torque the lug nuts down to when putting the wheels back on. Thanks for the great video!

FCP Euro is probably not wanting to take any liability by saying what each WHEEL Lug torque should be as it differs from car model to car model (not just an E90 M3). In theory, the person installing the lug nut/bolt should know ANYWAY what the torque is for that vehicle anyway as if they werent using these lug studs, but rather just putting their factory lug nuts/bolts back.

When using this method, is there anything special things to be mindful of when removing the two nuts used to tighten the stud such that the stud doesn't loosen?
@mikejohnson1228
@mikejohnson1228 Год назад
its exactly reverse order of tightening. Hold a Wrench firmly on nut near the rotor's hat (do not let this wrwnch turn when undoing the outer nut) and then another wrench/power driver/socket to remove the outer nut.

How would you ensure the torqued studs aren’t loosened when loosening/removing the two donor nuts off?
@jo8737
@jo8737 3 года назад
You unlock the nuts from each other. Similar to the way lock nuts work in a bicycle steering fork/tube or a wheel hub. You want to let the locktite set overnight of course and remove the lock nuts the next day.

you better replace them once a year .. I just happened to notice that two of mine broke off this morning , scary shit.. going back to stock lugs.

I'm just curious, why do this? Must be some advantage I'm not aware of, other than it does make it easier to install a wheel.
@mullner88
@mullner88 3 года назад
I think that’s basically it. I’ve heard of plenty of issues at the track with studs breaking or coming loose. I’m not convinced of the potential benefit so I stick with the lug bolts and use wheel hangers in the meantime when swapping wheels
@LaserStreak
@LaserStreak 3 года назад
Lug nuts are also cheaper than lug bolts.
@abimmernut
@abimmernut 3 года назад
@@LaserStreak True, BUT on BMW's the lug bolts are usually (not all) exposed & part of the visual part of the wheels. I will assume the bolts are stronger than the studs & nuts but that just a guess on my part.
@UaeDelta
@UaeDelta 3 года назад
Lug bolts are grade 12.9, OEM nuts round off easily plus they are 8.8. In all honesty, its easier to install wheels that way, safer to run a spacer too and you dont run the chance of stripping the threads.
@fcpeuro
@fcpeuro 3 года назад
It depends on who you are and how your vehicle gets used. If you drive your car on the track often, wheel studs are a must. The more times you take your wheels on and off with bolts, the higher the chance you have of damaging the threads of your wheel hub. With studs, you only run the risk of damaging the threads of the stud which is much easier and cheaper to replace.
@Stale_Mahoney
@Stale_Mahoney 3 года назад
yeah i have a hard time understanding why manufacturers went from wheel nuts to wheel bolts... it is so much simpler to chuck a wheel on the bolts and then put nuts on the end than having to line up the damn wheel on holes while balancing it on the hub edge...
@fcpeuro
@fcpeuro 3 года назад
Studs are far superior, perhaps it was a cost thing that ultimately shifted manufacturers away?
@Stale_Mahoney
@Stale_Mahoney 3 года назад
@@fcpeuro maybe i can't believe it is for convenience at least that is for sure, and the chost if you stripp the treads in a hub is allot more expensive fix than if you strip a bolt that simply can't be knocked out and replaced.

Any tip on how to remove those?
@fcpeuro
@fcpeuro 3 года назад
To remove old wheel studs, you again use the double nut method but in reverse. Before trying to remove it though, it's recommended to heat up the base of the stud near the wheel hub using a MAP torch to break the bond of the Loctite.

I just removed 4 damaged studs today. I took a small pipe wrench, tightened as much as possible onto the stud, hammered it even tighter, then turned the wrench with a cheater bar for leverage. Of course you'll likely have to re-tighten the pipe wrench a few times on each stud and it took time but I got them all out in about 15 minutes.

@fcpeuro
@fcpeuro 3 года назад
There is just a chance of marring up the new lugs, that said it can totally be done with new ones, just best to use old ones since you're essentially using them as a tool!
