On today's 2 minute garden tip, I show how to insulate plants from cold without covers or blankets. When protecting plants from cold, I typically recommend row covers and hoop houses for vegetable gardens and plant jackets for fruit trees. However, sometimes it's not practical to cover plants this way.
What happens if you have a large garden that's too big to cover with row covers, sheets or blankets? What if it's too windy outside and covers cannot be used? Luckily, there is a simple solution! I will show you how to safely bury plants in mulch to insulate them from cold weather.
For additional cold protection methods, see these playlists:

It's just starting to snow here in western Tennessee! The forecast is up to 6 inches in the next two days. I'm originally from eastern Washington state (it was -7 there yesterday), where winter is a real season. We used pine needles for crop cover. Tip: It's also a survival tip if you're ever stranded in the mountains. Lay on them and cover yourself with them. Currently, I have all my container figs up on the porch, well packed with a 12 inch layer of pine needles on all sides. TFS and good luck!

I hope everyone is preparing as well as you. Here in SoCal I just finished: harvesting 30 pounds of green beefsteak tomatoes from freeze decimated plants😢, loading the last of the leaves into the wire cage, and covering the strawberry beds with dried grass I harvest from the yard. Last week I used last year's leaf mould to cover my 5-20 gallon tulip 🌷 grow bags.

I did the same thing 3 weeks ago. I got tired of fighting the frosts on my tomatoes and let them get hit. This is going to be a fun week.

@@2MinuteGardenTips What are your favorite uses for green (unripe) tomatoes, assuming you can't finish ripening them inside? I've slso got a bunch (need to weigh them) that are too immature to ripen.

With 5 days in a row of below freezing temps, I didn’t think row covers were going to cut it. Happy to know that the deep mulching I did with dead leaves wasn’t a complete waste of time! 😀

Ultimately, nothing is for sure. If it's much colder than normal for a long period of time, all bets are off. These techniques give you a fighting chance. Even better is deep mulching *and* covers, but there is only so much time in a day.

Also pine straw if you can’t find anything else. It’s a bit heavier and less insulating but better than nothing

How do you insulate from frostmagedon? Keeping a few plants alive is easier than a whole garden. Then your ready when warmer weather comes. Can’t keep the entire thing through the winter. Just a thought

It depends what you're trying to protect. Things like garlic, onions and carrots can be temporarily buried. Evergreen subtropicals need active heating in most cases, which is why I use lights and water barrels. Deciduous trees should largely be fine as long as they're zone-appropriate since they're dormant. Things like brassicas and lettuce, all you can really do is cover them. You can't really bury them, because they can rot after awhile.
@hazeysgarden
@hazeysgarden 6 месяцев назад
So I can just throw row cover & or sheets over my brassicas and they should be fine? I also have a bunch of shredded leaves & straw.
@2MinuteGardenTips
@2MinuteGardenTips 6 месяцев назад
It depends how cold it gets. Keeping the frost off with a cover adds some protection, but eventually cold will take its toll. Here in 8b, generally a frost cover is all I ever need for brassicas, but this cold coming for us is something special. I may use 2 covers.

This is my first time growing bunching onions. Will they need to be covered? I'm in Texas zone 8b changed to zone 9a. The low is predicted to be in the low tens. Thanks, Anthony 😊

It depends how cold it gets. Generally, bunching onions are fine until roughly 20°F or so. If it is going to be that or colder, I would cover them.

Any need to cover blueberry or black raspberry plants in around 3 Fshrenheit?
@2MinuteGardenTips
@2MinuteGardenTips 6 месяцев назад
No. Absolutely not. I wouldn't touch them at -10F 😂 Most blueberries are hardy to around Zone 3/4, blackberries around zone 5-ish, and raspberries around zone 4-ish. They should be just fine.
