In today's video, you will learn how to Intercept VOR radials, what is a QDM, what is QDR, and how you can prepare an IFR flight.
The Vor has 360 radials (one for every degree), it is very important that you know in which radials you are and which heading you need to set in order to intercept the next Vor Radial.
The Standard Instrumental Departure that we are going to fly in the video is based on the SME VOR.
In order to have a correct indication on your HSI you need to set the VOR radial in FROM or TO depending if you are leaving the VOR at the back or you are flying inbound the VOR,
Using the HSI you can set a specific radial, the instrument will show the radial position compared to your aircraft location.
So, if the VOR radial you want to intercept is at the right the HSI moveable bar will be at the right.
If the radial that you want to intercept is at the right you need to set a heading that goes beyond the radial, otherwise, you will fly parallel to it. And, if the radial is at the left you need to set a heading that is smaller than the radial if you want to intercept it.
If you are flying inbound the VOR you need to set your HSI to TO and if you are flying away from the VOR you need to set the HSI in FROM.
The RMI will give you the QDM and the QDR of your VOR of interest. If you want to fly inbound a VOR you need to set the QDM on your heading.

@PILOTCLIMB, when you're turning inbound the VOR on the second leg where you have the course of 190, can't we say that's the radial 010 INBOUND? Because you're northeast of the VOR. So radial is 010 and the course is 190 because you are flying inbound of course. Thanks

Can you explain what is mean by “on which sector the aircraft is”? When you mentioned a question you might get in airline interview. Are we talking about the sectors for hold? Direct ,parallels,coffers? I don’t get it

Hi captain, correct me if i m wrong but i would start turning left to intercept 190radial at 3600ft during initial climb on 053 course. In my opinion 10dme is mentioned as last point to start the turn. (Min3600ft must be reached max at 10dme)
@PILOTCLIMB
@PILOTCLIMB 3 года назад
Hey, many thanks for watching! You should fly to the 10nm point and be 3600 or above, the problem if you turn before it will be very hard to intercept the radial 190 inbound. I hope I answered your question

Hi there. Been watching a lot of your videos, really helpful. I am trying to change the MFD/ND display on the 737 on x plane to show the VOR compass rose, as you have in this video. When I use the glareshield panel and switch from MAP or PLAN to VOR, it does not switch to the circular compass rose. Any tips?

Hello Pilot. Great video! One question; if the platform at VOR is 5200', does it mean we need to have exactly 5200 feet above it or minimum of 5200 feet? Greetings!
@PILOTCLIMB
@PILOTCLIMB 2 года назад
Glad you like it! In that case you can cross the point at or above 5200

HI captain i understood everything however could you quickly explain how did you get the heading of 016 degrees after you came over head BTA VOR? thanks in advance
@PILOTCLIMB
@PILOTCLIMB 2 года назад
I'm glad you undestood the concepts of the video. The heading 016 was required to perform the tear drop entry. Watch the video I made regarding holding entries to see the reason why: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-ZxNA5iqdOjg.html

I think the SID doesn’t say turning at 10nm but latest. The moment to turn is given by the altitude not by the distance. So if we turn only at 10nm we violate the procedure
@PILOTCLIMB
@PILOTCLIMB 2 года назад
Many thanks your comment! You should fly to the 10nm point and be 3600 or above, the problem is that if you turn before the 10nmpoint it will be very hard to intercept the radial 190 inbound, thus you will overshoot the radial inbound. I wish you a great day!

On my X-plane 11 Zibo B737-800 if you miss the approach the A/C will automatically fly to the hold without doing any settings. In the real B737 is this also the case??? Thanks!

This video is terrible because you are having a station passage over the station however if you want to show a radial intercept then you need to be on or out from the station and simulate a radar vector to intercept a radial ! I actually got confused since i studied radial intercept based on my instrument ifr book which is different . You are talking to beginners who wants to fly the 737 and there for you need to simulate in comparison with the ifr study for CPL holders not for a sim pilots or real 737 pilots
