If you like this style of learning, I made a class with my friend Ian on how to build up the confidence to play with other musicians. I'm really proud of it so check it out:
www.udemy.com/how-to-jam-on-g...
Going over a couple tips you can use to jump from playing chords into playing lead. Using one really easy arpeggio and a couple chord voicings, you can fluidly play from open chords into a minor pentatonic shape with ease!
All done in the people's key of D.

I been playing guitar for roughly 32 years but yet I always seem to watch RU-vid guitar lessons. It doesn't seem to matter if it's beginner lessons to advanced lessons I always learn something new that I can apply to my guitar playing. Thank you Sean.

I am amazed at how guitarists can play so cool. Ive been struggling for 20 years and still cannot play barre chords properly and my fingers wont move well enough to play pentatonic scales. I can see that you are an excellent teacher for the more gifted and I enjoy listening to your skills. WOW !

Excellent lesson, thank you Sean! Ive been playing guitar for 26 years now, I started off learning chords and not long after the pentatonic, finally the past few years I buckled down and learned as much theory as I could, I can now play Major/Minor scales and major pentatonic/minor pentatonic in all keys across the whole fretboard! I make up backing tracks or jam over ones on here, I just wanted to say I really appreciate your videos cause they are helping me become more musical and helping me to understand how to connect chords, scales and arpeggios and how to actually use these things so I have survived many plateaus and I am very happy to be at the point where I feel like I have all the theory tools to play with creative freedom!!! Im amazed at how much we can learn from each of your videos even though some are under 10 minutes long, this gave me some great ideas thanks again!

Guitar playing is a journey, Where you are today is just a step in that journey. Look back in a year and you’ll say to yourself “this is a great path to be walking” one moment you are learning chords and the next thing you see yourself forming a very fluid sense of playing. My mantra is “Just keep picking”

Fun trivia - If you sequence the formula for the original arpeggio he uses (1,2,3,5) across 3 octaves in Cmajor...or better said Cadd9, you're playing the Final Fantasy 7 prelude.... :-)

Controversially I prefer 8, and its OST....ahhhh! But the 7 prelude, lets see. If I recall correctly its, Cadd9, Amadd9, some arpeggio I cant remember the name of, Some other arpeggio I cant remember the name of, G#Maj7, A#Maj7....Repeat.....I think. Poor effort, haha.
@in2itmusicnet95
@in2itmusicnet95 5 лет назад
The first example is NOT an arpeggio - arpeggios are made up of chord tones played one at a time. It is a partial D-Major pentatonic scale, which is the relative major to the B minor. The tonic of B minor is B, not D. The relative minor scale consists of the same notes as its relative major, but starting on the 6th tone of the major scale. The relative major scale starts on the 3rd tone of its relative minor. This is true in all keys. The Major pentatonic and its Minor pentatonic scale "shapes" are identical - the landing points determine their mode (major or minor). In the example, you land on D, so you are really playing a D major pentatonic scale - it just happens to have all the same notes as the B minor. Good technique, but the musc theory terms are inaccurate.

I have a really big question for you. When a chord is playing, how many different scales available to play solo? In your previous videos, I got the gist that when the solo part is played-for example-when it hits the C chord (in thr key of C), we can play either the C chord scale (either the major or minor scale), or the A minor pentatonic scale (the relative minor scalr of the key of C), thus we are given two options of which scale to play the solo. You also show that in any keys, the relative minor pentatonic scale of that key is always good to play in any chords of that key, but does that mean our note options are limited to just one scale for each key? Which I don't believe is true. So, what options do we have when soloing, in terms of note scales? And when those multiple options are available, is it possible to mix them into one continuous solo playing? For example, when the C chord is playing, I may play the relative minor pentatonic scale (A minor scale) and the C major scale interchangeably in one solo. Would it be nice to mix the two scales, or just play one scale at a time? Sorry for long post. I'd appreciate it if you could demonstrate what I've been questioning in any future videos you'll make. Thank you. Keep the good works coming!
@seandaniel23
@seandaniel23 7 лет назад
Fantastic question and I'll do a video on this soon. I think the thing to remember is that the same group of 7 notes can have many different names. Like the C major scale versus the A minor scale. Those scales contain the exact same 7 notes. Now the reason they seem so different on guitar is because we usually learn them as different positions. Like if I start on the 5th fret of the low E string and play 5-7-8 then down a strings 5-7-8 etc, I'm 'thinking' of A minor, whereas if I start on the 8th fret and play 8-10 then 7-8-10 etc I'm 'thinking' C major. In reality we're playing the same 7 notes, but mentally we're processing them as different scales. And this is where modes kind of start coming into play. So definitely watch the Modes videos I have and hopefully it'll start to make more sense, in the meantime I'll try and answer more thoroughly in a new video :)

@MaggaraMarine
@MaggaraMarine 7 лет назад
C major and A minor scales have the same notes, and if you are going to play over a C major progression, the scale should always be called C major, regardless of the position you are playing in. You are using the same 7 notes and the tonic (key center, home note, root) is C all the time. In the key of C major, C major scale is not the only scale that you can use. You can actually use all of the 12 notes. Most likely you want to emphasize the 7 notes that are in the scale (not to sound too "outside") but this doesn't mean you can't use the 5 "outside" notes. The most important thing is to use your ears. It is good if it sounds good. One common thing is to use the parallel minor pentatonic over a major key progression. For example if we are in the key of C major, you could use C minor pentatonic. This will sound bluesy. But it will not work over all progressions so it's not always a safe choice. And it only works well for certain, more blues influenced styles.

@lawrencemichaelis5908
@lawrencemichaelis5908 6 лет назад
There are lots of scales you can play over different progressions, like the blues scale, harmonic minor, melodic minor, pentatonic, and many more plus the different modes mixolydian etc. The key is note choice also some scales, modes will sound better than others.

KISS= Keep it simple stupid. You just did and it was a real nice job. You must be a wonderful teacher and seem like a good down to earth guy. I've been playing 50 years but you brought me back to some great basics. Thanks.

This is awesome... Anyone who has a basic knowledge of the Major Scale and how Chord Progression works should be able to get some more insight into their soloing. This video opened a few doors to my playing ability, and being able to see the fret board from another perspective is priceless. Great video.

Hi Sean, I enjoy your inspirational films. I'm a reasonably competent beginner but struggling to bridge the gap between chords and soloing. You've introduced the idea of how to navigate this mystery.
