In this Frequently Asked Question Episode, I demonstrate how to install package bees into two different hive designs step by step with commentary. Saskatraz survivor cold weather bees are being added to my backyard apiary. They are advertised to be disease resistant and varroa "tolerant" while demonstrating great honey producing traits.
Is a Saskatraz Honey Bee smaller than others? No, I measured several samples against the BeeWeaver line of honey bees and they are the same if not a tiny bit larger? They do appear to have longer tongues which will give them access to floral sources that some others cannot reach. Some varieties of alfalfa for example, have flowers that are too deep for some honeybees.
Please take a moment to write any questions you may have for "beginning beekeepers" in the comment section and I will possibly add your question to the upcoming FAQ next Friday!

Your Saskatraz Package bees were so much fatter than mine! I had so many more dead at the bottom of the package, and they had no comb built in the package. My queen was dead in the cage (Bee Maniacs replaced her the next morning at no charge to me - the replacement queen was also super skinny), and yeah, that syrup can was empty. I have package bee envy! I can't wait to check on the replacement queen in my first hive inspection this weekend. At least my workers have visibly plumped up. Thank you for making this video!

At first glance of some other videos the plastic cage had me more than a little concerned, but after having my last shipment of bees never arrive due to package damage and bees released. This certainly will not happen with the plastic bee bus shipping container. I will start asking my bee senders if they offer the plastic shipping container as I would pay a small premium for this assurance for me and the Postal Service.

Fred, I noticed that you fed Sugar Water, but no Pollen Patties at this point. I am going through a half pound pollen patty per hive per week and I am having great weather (mid 80's this weekend) for the past two weeks. My hives are bringing in a lot of pollen in the morning hours but it must be mostly nectar and water in the afternoon because their pollen baskets are empty. I was wondering why you are not feeding pollen patties at this stage to help them feed brood and produce royal jelly for the queen, workers, and hatching eggs into brood?
@FrederickDunn
@FrederickDunn 5 лет назад
Hi Glen, I have a separate pollen feeding station which is west of the apiary. They were in that feeder 3 weeks ago, but not one bee has been in there recently as they are bringing in plenty from the environment. I do feed sugar water inside the hive, but I only offer Ultra Bee Pollen Substitute outside. The Patties were removed from the hives as they weren't touching them anymore and I didn't want them in there as the weather heats up which ruins the patties and cause them to sag down into the frames. I was using the Ultra Bee Mann Lake Protein Patties (their top blend) and only one colony ingested half of one pattie. Thanks for that question!

Hey Fred, I'm slowly getting through all your older vids and learning something each time so thanks again! In this one you mentioned that some lines of alfalfa are difficult for bees to get at the nectar or pollen, not sure which. This is of particular interest to me as my 3 hives are set up at a nearby alfalfa farm. Which alfalfa is the culprit? It's my first year and they seem to be doing great but that may be for other reasons such as an old abandoned apple orchard and lots of wild strawberries. Thanks for the help :)
@FrederickDunn
@FrederickDunn 3 года назад
Hi Henry, I would walk out into that alfalfa field and see if honey bees are accessing the nectar. That would be your fastest route to finding out if it's the type with accessible nectar. Honey bees are not all the same, some have longer tongues! Tongue length may be one reason the Saskatraz bees are getting more honey on than my BeeWeaver line.

Great tutorial/demonstration. With drones from Weaaver & Saskatraz colonies frequenting you local drone congregtion areas, are you hopeful of a hybrid between the strains, with the gentleness & mite resistance of the Weaver and the hardiness of the Saskatraz? I guess it would be great if it happened that way around, not the opposite! Of curse, you could most likely end up with some of each, and then by selection get the best of both lines. Roll on the Dunn line of mite resistant, gentle, productive and hardy bees!
@popquizzz
@popquizzz 5 лет назад
I guess with what Fred said about Saskatraz having a colony lifespan of 18-24 months, I'm not so sure the Saskatraz are proving their cost premium and that much hyped reputation that seems to precede them throughout the hobbyist beekeeper industry. But then I look at videos from Ian Steppler from Manitoba Canada and he has some Saskatraz Queens that he loves and some of his hybrids that are showing colonies that have been going sine 2014. Of course he over-winters indoors and has a very regimented varroa mite treatment with oxalic acid vapor treatment. So I think Fred said it all when he stressed mite treatments and it seems oxalic acid treatment is effective if done properly and is minimally a nuisance for the bees.
@FrederickDunn
@FrederickDunn 5 лет назад
Hi Phil, yes! It's my intention to not only blend genetics through mating flights of virgin queens but also to spread these genetics in my neck of the woods as I hope they will add vigor to feral and managed colonies for miles in every direction :) I also agree with Glen Copeland's response! I have a neighbor to the northeast of me and he has never purchased a bee as he simply captures swarms and stocks his apiary with them. So, I'm creating a genetic "stronghold" and hope to resist being genetically influenced by neighboring beekeepers who seem to be popping up closer to my location than ever before. The strongest and fastest drones will be mating, and I see nothing wrong with that.

Thanks again for a great video and lots of helpful information. After you get the hive established, how do you get the bees to use the flow frames to store honey? They sealed all the cells last fall but didn't store any honey in them. This spring they didn't want to fill them either. Since it's still early I'm hoping to get some flow honey ;)
@FrederickDunn
@FrederickDunn 5 лет назад
It's really about building hive numbers and resources so they will expand into the Flow-Frames for storing those additional honey stores. If the colony never gets high enough numbers, they may not end up in the flow-super. The good news is that they have already prepped the frames, they should more readily use them for honey stores. The year is early Bill, I hope they do what you are hoping they will. Mine don't generally fill the flowframes until late summer, but we've had lots of rain this spring and that generally results in heavy nectar in the flowers which may translate to early flow super filling. I don't have any flowframes on yet, but will add them probably in the next couple weeks when the bloom really kicks in!

When using your Rapid Feeder which blocks the upper vent hole in the inner cover... is it necessary to create other holes to allow for proper ventilation of the hive? If so would you screen them off? Thanks
@FrederickDunn

They do a great job of re-routing air down through the main entrance for incoming and outgoing air. As the nectar flow gets into full swing, the rapid round is removed and the upper vent/access is opened as needed. Thanks for that question, I should address it in my next FAQ.

Thank you for the detail you went through in the installs. The little things you mentioned i haven't seen on others videos. Your one comment on the bee weaver strain caught my attention. Also if i am planning to simply uses any honey for personal use and family and friends would the differences matter? Watching the activity on the landing boards is fascinating so im gonna have to set viewing seats also.
@FrederickDunn
@FrederickDunn 5 лет назад
Hi Mike, the differences in honey production are conspicuous. My Weaver Bees produce about 10 gallons per hive while Italian bees I had years ago yielded almost twice that amount, but they couldn't hold up to varroa and other challenges without treatment, so it's a trade-off. I'll know more about the Saskatraz bees as the nectar flow kicks in full bore. I've already observed that they fly out earlier than my other colonies.

Thank you again for another great video. Over several videos you share your thoughts on Acorn bee frames ... as with everything I’ve bought on your recommendation, they are excellent. The common recommendation is that brood frames be replaced periodically. When discussing Acorn frames, I was wondering if you can clarify wether the frames themselves can be reused; they seem like they can last decades. If they can be reused (e.g., an absence of brood deceases) how does one clean them? Would letting wax months be a an easy way of having nature recycle the wax? Thanks for your thoughts.
@FrederickDunn
@FrederickDunn 4 года назад
Hi George, I probably should do a video on renewing frames. Some I just throw away, but Acorn frames can be power washed, dipped in 10% bleach solution 10 minute dwell time, then dried out and re-waxed. They come out amazingly clean. If they show physical signs of deterioration, they get power-washed and sent in for recycling.
@georgegarcia5052
@georgegarcia5052 4 года назад
A video on cleaning frames probably wouldn’t be very popular. But your thoughts on cleaning the Acorn frames is both good for the pocket book and good for the environment. I’m sure commercial bee keepers would never through out plastic foundation but do exactly as you advice. New bees, on the other hand, might just through out used brood frames as they’ve been told to replace them every few years. Thanks!

Absolutely tremendous Fred. Thank you so much for your effort. As a brand new beekeeper starting in the southern hemisphere spring this year, I can't convey to you how invaluable this was. With my brand new equipment preparing for the coming spring, I have ordered those Ceracell blue feeders. Could you advise how you would put together a hive if you were using these? I don't know if I need extra spacers or inner covers as well. Also, you had mentioned about keeping them clean, what would you do about that if you were using this feeder, or is this reason enough for you _not_ to use this feeder design? Many thanks in advance. All my best to you, MK.
@FrederickDunn
@FrederickDunn 5 лет назад
I do like the Ceracell feeders! You can leave the wooden part in place and simply pull and swap the blue basin. That's right, I suggest that you have an extra and I'll address this in FAQ 17 as it's easy once people see how to do it. So, say you had 3- ceracell feeders in service... having a 4th makes cleaning and swapping easy - bring the clean blue basin out - open the cover and pull the empty from the hive, install the clean one and then fill it. Then wash the removed basin and use it to swap the next in-service feeder. You do need to place the Ceracell on an inner cover or solid board with a feeder hole in the center. If placed on a hive without a board underneath it, the bees will run burr comb all over the underside - OH! you just gave me an idea to build a shim for the ceracell with an integrated inner cover... THANKS!!!
@6Deep6
@6Deep6 5 лет назад
@@FrederickDunn Thanks a lot for this reply, it answers some questions I have on it and I look forward to FAQ 17. Could you please also elaborate on the following, when you address this topic: So if using an inner cover, the Ceracell feeder has access in the middle and corners, does this mean you would cut holes at all those points? Why wouldn't the bees build burr comb inside the cut holes? Clearly, I'm a total noob about bees! :) With many thanks, MK.
@FrederickDunn
@FrederickDunn 5 лет назад

I noticed you left the hive entrance open when you installed the package and allowed the stragglers to find their way out of the cage. Around here folks generally plug the entrance with grass for a couple of days otherwise the bees might abscond. Is there a way to tell whether I can leave my hive open? Been beekeeping for several years but only off and on. Trying Saskatraz for the first time this year.

I have never had a package install end up in an absconding incident. The bees generally go straight into orientation flights and begin foraging almost right away. I also see no reason to restrict the entrance with grass. They won't go anywhere without their queen and if she's in lay, she can't fly.

I wanted to ask... usually I do nucs not bee packages. But this year, I thought I'd try packages so I could make sure I knew how to do them, even though I like nucs better. Some bee package sellers tell you to install the packages right before dark (at dusk). I'm curious how things turn out usually in comparing the differences of installing a package at dusk compared to just putting them in there during the day? Thanks.
@FrederickDunn
@FrederickDunn 2 года назад
I have always installed packages during the day. I can think of no reason that you should wait until dark as they are completely unfamiliar with the new terrain and wouldn't be scooting off to their original hive location. Plus, they get jump on provisioning the new hive right away while the queen is awaiting her release. They aren't going anywhere without the queen, and she'll most often in the cage for a couple of days.

Question. My highly anticipated day of getting and installing a nuc of bees came. My enthusiasm was dulled a bit the next day, my neighbor loads a fourwheeler with a tank of Roundup to spray dandelions on his and another neighbors property. 1. Is roundup bad for bees? 2. Is there anyway to keep bees from flying the day my neighbors are spraying? 3. How would you approach this kind of situation? Looked into a bit, roundup for laws isn't glyphosate its a combo of 4 herbicides : MCPA , Quinclorac, Dicamba, Sulfentrazone. Big thanks for your videos, really helps a new beekeeper like me out.
@FrederickDunn
@FrederickDunn 5 лет назад
Hi Brett, the impact of an herbicide like roundup shouldn't noticeably impact your honeybees. It's not a pesticide, and the bees generally won't land on "wet" flowers. I think your bees will be fine. Too bad they won't be allowing flowering weeds to grow so your bees can use them!

Hi Frederick, I'm new to beekeeping since a coworker just recently introduced me to the flow hive and your videos. I've watched just about every bee video you've done up through faq16 and they're very helpful. I'm grateful for all the shared information and experience. I've got a few questions to throw in the ring. 1. Can the bees access the bottom of the flow frames (not the comb) to clean up the residual honey after you are done extracting and put the cap back on? Or do you leave the cap off so they can crawl in from behind the hive to clean up in there? 2. You've mentioned robber bees, wasps and other invaders flying straight in to the hive and the importance of the guard bees. For an upper circular entrance with closer access to the top super (or a feeder, etc) would there be an any advantage to install a small landing board outside of the circular entrance? Would guard bees defend from an upper entrance landing board before pests made their way in, or do they mostly just care about the queen and brood at the bottom board? 3. In a previous video you mentioned a gabeled roof offering some rain protection and shade until the supers get stacked up. Would installing a slanted roof about a foot or so above the landing board be of any advantage for keeping rain out of the entrance, or snow from accumulating on the entrance? If I've got a slatted rack and a screened bottom over a tray would it even matter? 4. Behind your chair in the videos it appears to be a brood box on the bottom that has a side panel over a window like the flow super. What are your thoughts about me installing side windows on the brood box (like the flow super) to inspect the outer frames and potentially cause less disruption of the hive? Would those outer sides of those two frames provide enough information to lessen how often I opened the hive for inspections anyway? Are those just going to be honey stores? If the glass was silicone sealed or propolized and there was a wooden panel, like the flow super, do you think there would be any problems with insulation in winters like yours? 5. Similar to the above question, how about a window on my medium super (top box in winter) to peer inside between the frames during winter to get an idea how far up the stores the cluster has migrated. Do you believe insulation would be an issue with sealed glass and wooden panel door? A thermal camera is probably out of reach. Thanks for the videos, and if you're able to get to any of my questions thank you for that as well.

@FrederickDunn
@FrederickDunn 5 лет назад
Hi Daniel, The most critical surfaces are of course, those inside the hive as the bees will be in constant contact there and it's an enclosed environment. The exterior finish of the wood is not so critical regarding composition, however, it's a great advantage to completely finish the exterior surfaces well in advance of installing the bees as there would be a lingering paint/varnish/tint/stain scent which could make it unpleasant for the bees. We've long since done away with paints and finished that include lead and other contaminants found to be harmful, so the field for exterior finished is really wide open to what will last the longest and meet with your own expectations for the perfect aesthetic. Most of the current water-based acrylics do nicely, consider roughing the surface with 250 grit sandpaper prior to the final coat and there should be better adhesion. Oil - may be working against proper adhesion as it takes much longer to dry and firm up. Remember, bees won't be chewing the exterior surfaces, they just walk on them.

@@FrederickDunn thank you Mr. Fred i always hear so many people freaking out about whats safe for the bees, i didnt do anything to the inside. You have to use a siccative oil wich dryes not any ordinary oil.a good and cheap siccative oil its the boiled linseed oil.On that the paint will stick after it gets dry but its not much compatible with waterbased paints.Solvent paints have good adherence to linseed oil.

do you think that they need to give more feed in those travelling cages? its seems risky that they were already empty on arrival!
@FrederickDunn
@FrederickDunn 5 лет назад
They are of course, constrained by the dimensions of the cage and I can only assume they had the cans topped off. Normally there is about a third of the travel nectar left, but these were all dry. They could have sent fewer bees in the package, but I can't complain based on how few dead bees were in the packages. I'm at the far end of their shipping range, so I think the pretty much got it right.

@FrederickDunn
@FrederickDunn 4 года назад
I'm going to talk more about this in my next FAQ, I know it's frustrating since you actually have to have some bees to do a split, or add the weaver queen after a swarm. This doesn't help if you don't already have a bee colony to work with. They just don't ship this far. I've never purchased their packages or nucs, I just buy in the queens and do splits or swap queens.

When are you going to get decent weather? My packages were installed 1 month ago today. One hive has at least 6 frames of drawn comb ( started with Pierco double-waxed deep plastic frames) and the other is not quite as far along - probably 4-5 good frames. Both have a lot of hatched brood, capped brood, larvae, etc. At what point do I start thinking about adding a medium box above? 8 frames of drawn comb? In TN we're in the middle of the Spring honey flow, but I'm still feeding. My math says it takes 3 weeks to hatch a bee, and they spend 3 weeks in the hive as nurse bees, so it'll be a good 6 weeks from egg to new bees foraging. By that time many of the bees from the packages will have died, so I figure at least 2 months of feeding.

i've seen video and heard of people treating mites with a mineral oil fog instead of acid fog. they just shoot the heated mineral oil right through the entrance for a couple of seconds. can you confirm or deny that this is a functional way of mite control?
@FrederickDunn
@FrederickDunn 5 лет назад
The efficacy/kill rate of that method is well below the Oxalic Acid Vaporization results. Same with the "fogger" methods, they seem convenient and that's the appeal, but not as thorough or effective as properly performed OAV treatments. I'm not here to dismiss the methods that others are demonstrating or using, but the science is pretty solid that foggers are less effective.
@xNecro666x
@xNecro666x 5 лет назад
@@FrederickDunn I see.what about natural methods of Oxalic introduction? such as thyme or rhubarb being left within the hive. both plants contain Oxalic acid, (each of course at different levels), and i've heard of people using those to treat as well. Also if you don't mind me asking, have you tried the Varroa Gate? can you determine if that is just as effective as a one shot treatment? I'm sorry for all the questions, I want to start bee keeping, have been wanting to do so for the past 2-3 years, but money is tight, and i want to make sure the thoughts and theories i have will be effective. I want to do some experiments on my hives when i get them, non-lethal, more natural to see what i can come up with. I have a lot of time on my hands to just sit and think, and i'm trying to collect as much information about mite control as i possibly can to aid other beekeepers.also, how do you feel about formic acid treatments? it seems to be a new thing, and can come in MAQS, people are stating that is is very effective, has a high kill rate, in the 97% range, and is an organic means of pest control.they suggest it as a top down treatment as it is heavier then air.
@FrederickDunn
@FrederickDunn 5 лет назад
@@xNecro666x Rhubarb works on chickens as they eat the leaves. As you may imagine there are many ongoing programs dedicated specifically to the targeting of varroa mites. There are resistant strains of honeybees that don't require treatment which was the route I have taken for the past 11 years. This year I am using the Oxalic Acid Vapor treatment... it's approved for organic bees, does not result in adapted resistance in varroa, has a high impact on varroa in any temperature and is my only selected method of treatment. Nothing else that I've found will do as good a job with less impact on the living bees.

I have a chicken question... Why do hens squawk a lot after they lay an egg? It's like they have to announce to every one of their new arrival. I would think in the Asian jungle where chickens came from, advertising new eggs would be counter productive as it might attract predators.
@FrederickDunn
@FrederickDunn 5 лет назад
When I was in the Philippine mahogany jungles back in the 80's I did see wild/feral jungle chickens and they were extremely quiet as they ran through the undergrowth. They very much resembled game roosters with those bold red, yellow, orange colors while the hens were drab and very hard to spot. The squawking/bragging that many hens do is not a really a wild bird trait as she would be quickly discovered by predators - of all the chickens I keep, there are only 2 or 3 hens that do that and one in particular that has ruined lots of my nature videos with her vocalizations! I do notice that when a hen does that as she exits the coop, roosters come running in order to mate with her. So, if there is a practical aspect, it would be to increase fertilization frequency by getting that attention from males. ("> So.. Gallus gallus probably didn't do that :)

Fred - I've mentioned before, I installed 2 packaged a month ago. They're from the same local bee supplier. My question is, one package seems much more docile than the other - If' I go into the hive, they don't need much smoke, they don't rise out of the hive, and they're not buzzing wildly. The other one is the only one I've gotten stung from, and it's been almost every time I've been in that hive. They are just more...active. Now, I don't think they're "africanized" or anything like that. If I step away about 10', if the most aggressive stop following me, then I can step back in and finish. But why the personality difference between the colonies?
@FrederickDunn
@FrederickDunn 5 лет назад
Ok! I have an idea for you, and btw, did you notice that of the three packages I received here, one was "touchy" and they all have personalities but you can overcome them. Get your sprayer with 50/50 sugar/water - Add in 2 teaspoons of Honey-B-Healthy or Pro-Health or your favorite essential oil mix. Instead of smoke, spray the landing board with it and when removing the outer cover, spray through the inner cover hole, then pull off the inner cover and spray them some more. I had great luck with this method last year and it allows the bees to keep working rather than shutting down the way smoke causes them to do. Try this out and then let me know how that worked! I'm adding this procedure to FAQ 17 because it has worked so well for me. Particularly on those hot days, they enjoy the treat.
@stgermain1074
@stgermain1074 5 лет назад
@@FrederickDunn Thanks! I'll give that a try. Yes, I did notice you had a similar issue. I kept thinking maybe it was because I was working that hive 2nd, and maybe the other bees stirred them up, or maybe my smoker wasn't puffing out as much, but this time I worked it first.

I wanted to do a hive inspection, but the bees were touchy right off the bat, although I sprayed them with sugar syrup with a heavier dose of HBH. I gave them some light smoke across the top of the hive. A couple things - here in TN we're just starting dearth (I think). About the only thing blooming is Queen Anne's lace and buttercup. I'm still feeding - because these were packages (now installed about 7 weeks ago) I've been feeding continuously. Also, I was wearing black gloves. They were really going for my hands - could it be the black gloves? I don't mind a sting here or there, but not being able to open the hive is making it a lot less interesting.
