I'm going to give this a try as I love salad in the summer. To keep Cilantro bunches from getting black and icky I pull as many of the lower leaves out of the bunch and put the whole bunch in a glass partially filled with water. I store this in the refrigerator with a "keep fresh" bag over the top. It lasts for weeks.

My lettuce was starting to turn brown on outter, top leaves, I trimmed it up, lined cookie sheets with parchment between layers of lettuce. Worked perfect. Take one out, chop it up, add to casseroles, soups, whatever. Not one head lost, frozen, and used. Can't thaw it for fresh, but great for filler vegetable in other recipes.

For iceberg lettuce.. it'll keep much longer if you slam it on the counter on its core which busts loose the core.. remove the lettuce core ( should come right out ) and toss it.. Old restaurant trick
@KitchenTipsOnline
@KitchenTipsOnline 4 года назад
I appreciate your suggestion and feedback, however what you are suggesting, slamming a lettuce on the counter to remove the core, well actually cause it to deteriorate quicker. Lettuce is used very quickly in the restaurant business so there's little need to store it for weeks. Restaurants slam the lettuce on the counter to remove the core because it makes it easier to prep it for salads etc. When lettuce is slammed on the counter it is bruised and actually deteriorates more quickly. So at home, if you want your lettuce the last longer, don't remove the core by slamming it down or cutting it out with a knife. Mike 🙂

I am a senior citizen living on social security. Nothing that I purchase can go to waste. I put packages of baby spinach in the freezer and just take out what I need for a smoothie or to chop for an omlete. I wrap celery in foil after cutting off the end....or chop and freeze. I cut the end off a romaine head... loosen up the leaves and place in plastic containers with a paper towel...I have had it be crisp 3 weeks later. When I buy berries...I freeze them right away. Thanks for these helpful $ saving tips!

I love these tips. I'm single and I don't go through food that fast and it ends up being thrown out. Which is a crime. It helps a lot especially bread which I don't eat fast enough, same with potatoes and most other veggies. Some stuff I can freeze such as bread and pull out when craving toast. And I've learned that there are many other foods, such as avocados you can freeze. I was skeptical but it works.

I find that tearing lettuce into nice usable sizes , (never use a knife, scissors etc.) and then placing into a large Zip lock bag, after adding a paper towel at bottom and then at top. I take air out by simply rolling the bag to just leave minimum space for the lettuce. Just a method I use but I can make my lettuce eatable and delicious for close to a month.

Just wanted to let you know. I watched your video a while back, and then tried out your tip for keeping lettuce and celery. All I can say is THANK YOU!! @@KitchenTipsOnline You are most welcome. I had despaired on buying lettuce because I just couldn't keep it green, crisp and fresh for more than a few days, and being the only one eating it, it was impossible for me to use much in such a short time. I don't like using the whole leaf. I prefer shaving it so it lays flat on my sandwich bread. I had tried so many other methods and none of them kept it long enough to finish even half the head until I saw your tip and tried it. Now I can't stop telling everyone about it, I am so impressed. I could not let that go without saying a hearty "thank you." Besides, I was brought up to be polite and to give credit where and when credit is due. Have a great day, and a wonderful Christmas! :D

Here’s a tip to help all your berries stay fresh longer! When I bring the berries (any & all berries ) home I put them in a bowl covered w/ water and add a splash of white or apple cider vinegar and let sit for ten minutes. Drain and lightly rinse, then let them sit out and air dry for a while. I then put them back into the container they came in or a glass container and put them in the fridge. After cleaning cilantro and parsley in the salad spinner I put paper towel (usually four in a row still connected) and roll the parsley or cilantro in the paper towel and then put it in a ziplock bag. It will last WEEKS this way. Roll a little bit of parsley or cilantro into the towel then add more and roll on. Keep adding and rolling until all the cilantro/parsley is rolled up in paper towel and then into the ziploc. You will be amazed....I was !

@@TinekeWilliams Sorry if this sounds rude cause I don't mean it that way but I have this problem with my in-home Aide & my pots & pans. He washes them. Both inside AND out. Grease & food particles stick to the outside & if they're not washed thoroughly, they get cooked on which makes them look old real fast. I invested in a reasonably priced high end set 20 years go & because I always washed them inside & out & never allowed metal near the non-stick coating all but 1 (the 1 my first Aide was using before I caught on) still looks brand new. It's easy once you get in the habit. 😉

For the record what you may not be aware of is that RU-vid ranks videos by how long people watch. If the video would have been a 30 second video, you would have never seen it. And that's because they would have never promoted it. One of the main ways the algorithm determines the value of the video is how long people watch. Just thought I'd share, Mike

I've veen doing this for years woth lettuce. The only difference is...I buy the plastic bags that don't have the zip lock on the top. I put the lettuce in the bag...suck the air out. Tightly twirl the excess bag at the top and use a bread tie to tie it. I dont just twirl it and tie it. I twirl it and fold the twirled part in half and then put the bread tie. That ensures even more to keep the bag sealed air tight.

Haha, you're welcome. Please come back and tell everyone how it works for you. Remember it's important to leave the core in place and not to was the lettuce before you put it in the fridge. Each time you need some, remove what you need and wash it then. If you use a knife to remove the core, the lettuce thinks it's been injured and start to deteriorate right at that spot. If you don't suck well, part seal bag and put under water (in a bowl) and seal when air in bag is pushed out. I use this to seal salmon steaks (when I get them) and other meat. Cheaper than vac. bags.

Here's how I store my lettuce and other veggies and it works great!! After rinsing lettuce I spin it dry and break it into leaves. When I put it in a ziplock bag I add 1/2 of a paper towel to absorb the extra moisture. I do this for all lettuce. For things like peppers that I may have cut up, I also use a 1/2 of a paper towel. I keep an eye on things as I work through my fridge supplies and change the paper towel as it becomes saturated. The build up of extra moisture is what I find makes veggies go bad faster. I have had Romane lettuce stay fresh and crisp for weeks!

Here's my tip: Once you remove your lettuce(s) from the grocery store wrapping, wrap it tightly in FOIL. This is for romaine, head or any kind of lettuce. I KNOW. It sounds crazy. But it works. Any lettuce I've used foil on to store will stay amazingly crisp for days and DAYS. The lady from whom I got this tip said: "It works. For those of you who don't believe me? I can't help you."😆😆😆😆😆

What deteriorates lettuce faster? ALL THE WATER the grocery store sprays on their produce. This does not help if buying at those stores. There is rust already on many of those organic iceberg lettuce heads. Removing the water on the inside of wrap is a must when you get it home, or it invades deeper.

What about using a vacuum sealer? I didn't seem to have much luck with a sealer. Maybe I did something wrong.
@KitchenTipsOnline

Actually a vacuum sealer probably is not a good choice for lettuce. I think that a vacuum sealer would have a tendency to crush the lettuce even if you are very careful. Lettuce will deteriorate quicker anytime it is damaged even if you use a dull knife. Mike

How many people like a good fresh cabbage? Well I have a great trick for ya! Cabbage is usually soggy after it's cooked, so let me help you out here. When you buy a cabbage at the store, it's been cut for at least a week and has lost a lot of its moisture. When you get home with it, get you a rocks glass or a big mouth jar & fill it with water. Take the cabbage and lightly trim the bottom of the root. Set the water next to a window & set the root in the water. Leave it for 3 or 4 days and then take chop it up to cook. Cut your sausage or whatever you put with your cabbage in a couple inches of water. let it cook for about 5 minutes and add your cabbage. Only cook your cabbage until is wilted well and you'll never have soggy cabbage! It also works for making great crispy coleslaw. Enjoy & that's an old trick I learned from my Granny 45 years ago!

I do the exact same thing with shredded cabbage, broccoli and cauliflowers, when I've was it and drained it I put it into a zipper bag, I zip the bag and just leave a fringe size open at one end, I then use this little hole to suck the air out and zip it up fully before taking it away from my lips so that no air can seep back in. I've been able to use these vegetables for nearly three weeks using this method.

I know this is an old video but none the less here's my kitchen tip. Never throw out eggs when they "expire". They stay good for a month or more longer. To test if an egg is good or bad just drop the egg into a cup of ice water. If the egg floats, it's bad. If it sinks, it's good. The reason is because a bad egg starts to build up gases inside the shell which will cause it to float.

Ice berg lettuce at my store is covered in plastic but the plastic has holes in it. How does that protect from gas from outside sources? Even a bag of shredded lettuce only deteriorates much quicker than a head of lettuce.
@KitchenTipsOnline
@KitchenTipsOnline 2 года назад
In my neck of the woods I have never seen iceberg lettuce in a bag with holes? Also as I indicated in the video, the reason that chopped up lettuce deteriorates quicker is that when it is disrupted, (chopped or sliced) it deteriorates at a much faster pace. Also all the other ingredients in the bag deteriorates quickly, Mike
