When I knit anything I block it before sewing together place a cotton cloth on the knitted part and use the steam iron to set it to it's shape and do it again once it it sewn together you get a much more professional piece of work

Thanks for the awesome tutorial and sweater recipe! I'm making a much larger size and the instructions you wrote made it really easy to figure out all the stitch counts and everything. I'm using a Loops and Threads knitting machine which has 40 needles so I'm having to make a couple more panels, but it's going great. I also replaced the ribbed hems with folded hems, mostly out of laziness.

Sounds incredibly complicated and fiddly, even though her instructions are precise! Mind you, I have only just started using the Addi King and have a lot to learn! My ultimate goal is to be able to make a jumper, but to do that I need to learn one step at a time... I have already successfully learned how to rib, my next step is to practice making panels (I’ve only used circular so far) followed by practising increasing/decreasing. God knows how I will get my head around translating actual measurements into the maths needed to be concise regarding rows, width and length! Again, one step at a time! Anyway, more study and practise.... will make perfect!

Your skill with knitting on your Addi King/Pro is par excellent!! After watching, because of the size I require, I will have to make mine on my Brother flat bed knitting machine. I require 75-85 needles across to make my front/back panels. However, I will use your brilliant idea for making a sweater for a teenager on my Addi King (requiring only two panels--front/back).. Actually love the colors you choose, and the idea of the stripe. I don't usually think to do stripes when machine knitting my sweaters. Friday night I made a double thick stripped hat with tassel; with matching scarf, to wear Saturday, using both my Addi King & Pro(because of a forecasted cold snap).

@YayForYarn
@YayForYarn 3 года назад
Hi. You can use some types of thinner yarn on this machine. However, you cannot change the gauge of the machine. So if the needles on the machine are similar to a US size 9 or 10, using a thinner yarn on the machine would be like knitting with sock yarn on size 9 or 10 needles. There are some very basic types of eyelet stitches that can be done on the machine, but knitting lace would require so much hand manipulation of each stitch that it would probably take longer to knit lace on this machine than to hand-knit the lace. I hope this helps!

Hello thank you for this great tutorial. can you tell me how many stitches you did for the sweater in the video? straight piece and sleeves. thank you in advance
@YayForYarn
@YayForYarn 8 месяцев назад
Hi. I don't remember how many stitches I did for the panels in this sweater, but even if I could give you those numbers, that would not help you. Because the size of your stitches will vary depending on the yarn you're using and how you tension the yarn as it feeds into the machine, it is important to choose the number of stitches to cast on based on the size of your stitches. Even if you used the same number of stitches as I did, your sweater may turn out larger or smaller depending on the size of your stitches with the yarn you are using. My tutorial for this project tells how to determine the numbers of stitches needed for your sweater based on the size of your stitches: yayforyarn.com/how-to-knit-a-sweater-on-your-addi-king-knitting-machine-video-tutorial/ I hope this helps!

I’m curious as to how much time it takes a person that your skill level to produce this beautiful sweater. I mean, if you were just making the sweater without taking the time to teach us, how much time would this normally take you?
@YayForYarn
@YayForYarn 5 лет назад
Hi. I honestly don't know how long it took, as I didn't document the time I spent on it. A good percentage of my time was spent writing the instructions. I think it took about a week, including the pattern writing time. I would guess mine took about 4-5 hours of actual knitting / assembly time, but that was while explaining it as I went, and I was also making a small size. Most larger sizes require more panels and therefore more knitting and a bit more assembly. That is just a rough estimate, but I hope that helps!

Hi there - thanks for the excellent tutorial! I am considering buying an Addi but don't just want to make hats. I have loads of scrap yarn and this would be a great way to make blankets up quickly! What is the thinnest yarn I can use? Would sock yarn work on an Addi King size? Also, can you make socks using sock yarn on the smaller Addi?
@YayForYarn
@YayForYarn 5 лет назад
Hi! Blankets are a great project for the Addi, particularly if you make flat tubes and mattress stitch them together like in this video: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-J31mTsE2X_c.html The ends are hidden easily, and the blanket comes out double-sided without any ugly seams on the back. The thinnest yarn you can use would be a #1 Superfine or sock yarn. However, the needle size cannot be changed. So if you knit with sock yarn, you get an open fabric, as if you used sock yarn on size 8 or 9 knitting needles. Socks on the Addi pro are best done with #4 worsted or #5 bulky yarns, and are more like slipper socks. I hope this helps!

Hi I absolutely LOVE your videos! I’ve finally managed to buy an Addi Kingsize but I’m really struggling to knit with anything thicker than DK. I’ve got some super chunky I was hoping to make this jumper with but my machine keeps jamming and snagging. I’ve already broken 2 needles! I’ve tried putting some tension on the yarn but it still does it! Am I doing something wrong or do I need different yarn? Thanks so much
@YayForYarn
@YayForYarn 5 лет назад
Hi Helen. If your yarn is a #6 Super Bulky weight, it is too thick for the Addi. The Addi Knitting Machines can only take up to a #5 Bulky weight. You could also try #4 Worsted weight, which should also work. Also, when you put tension on the yarn, you only want just enough tension to make the machine glide smoothly. If it is getting stuck, you may be putting too much tension on the yarn. Hope this helps!

I am looking at the Addi Express King size knitting machine, but am wondering if a 2X mans sweater could be done on it. Would I have 4 panels to knit together to make the body? Are there patterns for 2X men's sweaters?
@YayForYarn
@YayForYarn 5 лет назад
Hi Diana! The instructions for this sweater (here: yayforyarn.com/how-to-knit-a-sweater-on-your-addi-king-knitting-machine-video-tutorial/ ) will tell you how to calculate the sweater pattern for any size / yarn weight / gauge you want. So yes, you can make a 2X men's sweater. You will need to join several panels to make the front and the back, and you may also need more than one panel for each sleeve. The instructions include info on how to do those things. The pattern is not a row-by-row written pattern, but a recipe. You can use the instructions given to calculate the dimensions, numbers of stitches and rows, increases, and etc for a custom fit sweater in any size. Hope this helps! Thanks!

@YayForYarn

I prefer using Bulky yarn, mainly because thinner yarns tend to produce a more open fabric. However, you could try it with #4 yarn instead. Just keep in mind that the width of the panel will be a little smaller than when using #5 yarn. I hope this helps!

What is the benefit of a long-tail cast-on? If you had just cast on regularly, then you wouldn’t have had to pull the slack later.
@YayForYarn
@YayForYarn Год назад
Hi. The regular cast on normally used on this machine (bringing the yarn in front of one needle, behind the next, in front of the next, etc) is not a permanent finished edge. It is basically a row of live stitches with a strand of yarn going through them to hold them temporarily. It is great for if you are going to cinch the end of a tube closed, for instance, but for other projects where the cast on edge is not going to be cinched or grafted, you need a permanent cast on technique. The long tail cast on and the e-wrap cast on are both permanent cast on methods, and will work well for projects that will not be cinched or grafted. I hope this helps!

@f.s.h.g.9763
@f.s.h.g.9763 3 года назад
what happens if you don't do all the extra steps when increasing the width by one stitch on each side of the sleeve, and instead simply let the machine stitch one more needle on the 8th row (one additional needle on each side on that 8th row )? would it be sloppy or unravel? why all the extra steps (the looping around with crochet hook). very curious. please and thank you.
@YayForYarn
@YayForYarn 3 года назад
Hi. Yes, the method shown in the video creates a much neater looking increase. If you just turn the machine a little farther to make an extra needle grab the yarn, it will not be a secure stitch, so it will unravel. If you'd rather not use the method shown, you could cast on another stitch instead by creating a twisted loop with your working yarn and placing it on the next empty needle. (This is essentially the e-wrap cast on, video tutorial for that on my channel.) I hope this helps!

Is there a machine on which I can make socks, sweaters, hats, scarves, and gloves all on the same machine
@YayForYarn
@YayForYarn 4 года назад
Hi. I do not know of one machine that can do all of those things. Hats, socks, and gloves are all usually knit in the round, which requires a circular machine. Circular machines come in fixed sizes, and you cannot add or remove needles. So a machine that makes gloves and socks will not make a tube large enough for a hat. (They will only make a hat large enough for a premature or newborn baby.) A machine that makes a tube large enough for a hat will be too large for gloves and socks. Flatbed knitting machines can make larger pieces worked back and forth, but can only make things like hats and socks if the items are worked flat and seamed. With the Addi Kingsize knitting machine that I used for my sweater, you can make larger sweaters by sewing multiple panels together, and the machine is also a good size for making hats. However, the needles on this machine are best used with DK and worsted weight yarns. I hope this helps!

Does this machine knit different types of stitches? And can u use different sizes of yarn, like a smaller yarn on the machine?
@YayForYarn
@YayForYarn 4 года назад
Hi! This machine only does different stitches if you hand-manipulate the stitches. And yes, you can use a smaller yarn, but because the needles are always the same size, the fabric produced with smaller yarn is at a looser gauge than you would normally use for that yarn, so the fabric is more open and a little see-through. I hope this helps!

Also can you create different stitches and patterns using this knitting machine?
@YayForYarn
@YayForYarn 3 года назад
You can create different stitch patterns, but this type of machine is limited in that area. You cannot work garter stitch on this machine without a lot of extra time and effort. Cables and twists aren't really possible on this machine, because the fabric is stretched around the machine too tightly. Increases and decreases are possible, but are only feasible for the ends of rows or if you're putting an eyelet next to them. More complex stitch patterns would require hand-manipulating each stitch, and can end up taking even more time than hand-knitting the same stitch pattern. This machine is best for quickly making simple projects in #3, #4, or #5 yarn that are mostly done in stockinette stitch. However, while there are some stitch patterns you can make on this machine, this type of machine is not capable of a lot of the more complex shaping and designs that can be achieved with hand knitting or with a flatbed knitting machine. I hope this helps!

Can you use this with colorwork and what about patterns that call for changes in needle size within the pattern? Sorry if this is a dumb question🤭
@YayForYarn
@YayForYarn 4 года назад
Hi! You can use colorwork in a project like this. However, I do not recommend trying to follow a hand-knit sweater pattern on this machine. With this machine, it can be hard to make your gauge on the machine match the gauge in the pattern. Also, unless you are making a children's sweater or a women's extra-small, you will need to join panels together to make the pieces large enough. This is why I created the design-your-own sweater formula used in this video. You calculate the size of each piece and number of stitches / rows required according to the gauge you get on the machine with whatever yarn you are using. The written formula is available for free via the link in the description box. If you want, you can add colorwork or other decorative stitches. I hope this helps!

Hello. The machine will make rapid clicking noises as you turn it. This is totally normal. Sometimes in my videos, I mute the sound from the machine, but in real life, it does make noise. If your machine is making an abnormal noise or is getting jammed, follow the instructions in the manual that comes with the machine to disassemble the inner section and check if a needle is broken. Because the machine is plastic, it is not recommended to oil the machine. I hope this helps!

i'm probably going to crochet where you did ribbing so it doesn't curl. what i the gauge for your yarn on your knitting machine?
@bh4040
@bh4040 2 года назад
also i cant determine how long to make the panel of the body. how do you do it?
@YayForYarn
@YayForYarn 2 года назад
Hi Brad. The gauge of the fabric produced on this machine will depend on the thickness of the particular brand of yarn and the amount of tension you put on the yarn with your hands as it feeds into the machine. I would recommend making a gauge swatch with the yarn you are using, blocking it, and then measuring the gauge.
@YayForYarn
@YayForYarn 2 года назад
The total length of the body panel is determined by the measurement from the back of the neck down to wherever you want the finished length of the sweater to fall. You can also measure an existing garment that is a good length for the wearer for additional help deciding on a finished length. I hope this helps!

so is it easy to pickup stiches and add a tighter ribbing by hand?
@YayForYarn
@YayForYarn 3 года назад
Yes, you can pick up stitches easily. The cast on edge (if you cast on according to the instructions that came with your machine) is just a row of live stitches with a length of yarn running through them. You can pick up those stitches, join new yarn, and knit a ribbing from there. I hope this helps!
@ArDeeMee

I also find that a 2x2 ribbing pulls in much tighter.

Approximately how much yarn is needed? How much did you use?
@YayForYarn
@YayForYarn 5 лет назад
Hi Chloe! My sweater is about the size of a women's petite extra small, and I used about 630 yards of #5 Bulky weight yarn. The amount of yarn required will depend on the size you are making, the yarn you use, and the gauge at which you knit on your machine. It's good to make sure you have more yarn than you think you'll need, just in case. I would suggest looking on Ravelry for similar free knitted pullover sweater patterns in the yarn weight you want to use. You can then look at the approximate yarn requirements for the approximate sweater size you want to make. This would give you an estimate of about how much yarn you'll need. Hope this helps!

Can do that sweater in 3 ply yarn
@YayForYarn
@YayForYarn 2 года назад
Hi Barbara. I would not recommend using 3 ply / fingering weight yarn for this project unless you want the sweater to be see-through. These machines are designed for thicker yarns, and thin yarns on these machines create a loose, open knit fabric. The thinnest yarn I would suggest for this project would be a Worsted yarn. I hope this helps!

@Yayforyarn, is there a way to make a ribbed round neck with this sweater?
@YayForYarn
@YayForYarn 5 лет назад
Hi! Yes, you could do a ribbed round neck, but that requires a bit of shaping (to make the neck round) and working a ribbing around the neckline. I do not have a tutorial on that as of right now. Because there are so many possibilities with a sweater (as far as yarn weight, gauge, size, number of panels, etc), I can't really give a "formula" for making a round neck. But if you are comfortable working a bit of math for the shaping stitches, it can be done. You just want to bind off some stitches in the middle of the neck, and gradually decrease stitches on both sides until you get to the correct shoulder height. Then, you can pick up stitches onto the machine around the neckline to work a ribbing. Hope this helps!

How many skeins did you need for this?
@YayForYarn
@YayForYarn 3 года назад
Hi. I don't know how many skeins I used. However, I would suggest making a swatch to see how much yarn it takes to knit a square of a certain size. That info can be used to determine how much yarn you will need for whatever size sweater you are making. (I still recommend getting a little more yarn than you think you'll need, just in case.) I hope this helps!

Hi! If you want to determine how many stitches, rows, and etc you'll need to make your own sweater, check out the written tutorial here: yayforyarn.com/how-to-knit-a-sweater-on-your-addi-king-knitting-machine-video-tutorial/ Those instructions will help you calculate all of the stitch counts and row counts for a custom fit sweater in any yarn and any size you want. I dont see how a sweater with 90 or so stitches will fit most adults. I struggle to find yarns that will produce a hat sized tube that isnt tight around my head. My husbands head is 3cm bigger so theres no chance. I just dont understand why they cant make these looms with a few more pegs. I tell.you, if someone manages to market.such a product will become very rich very quickly.
@YayForYarn
@YayForYarn 15 дней назад
You are right, a sweater with 90 stitches will not fit most adults. However, the sweater formula / recipe on my blog gives instructions for joining multiple panels together to make sweaters in larger sizes than what can be made with one panel for the front and one for the back. I hope this helps!
