Great tutorial Mr. CDB. This was the bane of my shaving existence but after a while I managed to dial it in. A nice synthetic brush, a bowl with the proper grooves to agitate the soap, adequate loading and as you so eloquently demonstrated, SLOWLY adding the water intermittently. It’s been super easy after that and it work for any type of soap, cream, croap etc. you just have to know how much water the product can handle. After many tries it become second nature. Luckily today’s products are so refined it makes it way easier too. Hope you are doing well my good man. Stay blessed.

I have to remind myself to start fairly dry and slowly add the water. It's so darn aggravating to get too much and it's runny.

Thanks for sharing this. I usually take the Don Youngner approach and over hydrate, then work out the bubbles. Works great. I tried this method today and it produced beautiful results. I used 345 Shark Bite and it had amazing shean and performance. I appreciate this video. Have a wonderful day and evening, Chris 👍

I prefer not to add too much water at the onset because it's hard to recover if you haven't used enough product. That said, always use whatever method works best for you. I hope you have an excellent day sir!

Another great tutorial! I find the longer I go between watching these, the more and more water I tend to start out with. Not that big of a deal with most bases, but when I use a lower quality base it can break more easily. So watching these tutorials help me reset in a way 😄👍 Have a good one man! Steve

Cool! Now I know what I do wrong with bowl lathering...I splay the brush and the lather gets too much air. I'm a face latherer but want to bowl lather a few of my soft soaps and creams.

I've just done a beautiful lather with sea spice lime. I used a razorock plysoft synthetic and a ceramic bowl like captain's choice. I also used pure water. Had the cameras been on it would have been as shiny and creamy as one of your lathers. I believe other lathers have missed the mark due to not enough product and too much water too quickly. Thanks again for the knowledge you've imparted.

A great well explained tutorial on making a lovely shiny lather. My lather process is very similar and normally takes 3 to 5 mins as well, I might try that water spray bottle idea though. I do find some soap base lathers are not as shiny and/or dense as others but are still slick. Take care Chris.

Nice tutorial. (It looks like you have quite a few lathering videos!) I've had great results smearing a pea-sized amount of soap or pressing in 6 large flakes of triple milled soaps throughout the base of a plastic IMUSA salsa bowl ($2), then creating a paste with with a barely damp 26mm synthetic RazoRock Monster. The key step I've found is to lean the base of the knot against the edge of the salsa bowl and extract any lather that has lodged itself inside the knot so it can be re-worked with small additional amounts of water. Repeat process until achieving desired lather volume and consistency. You'd think this process might damage the brush, but my synthetic RazoRock Monster, after many years of use, still looks brand new. I'm hoping RazoRock will eventually release a 26mm RazoRock 400 Synthetic Noir Plissoft with it's more substantial aluminum handle. I don't know if silvertip badger or boar edge bristles would break over time using this technique , but I would be wary.

I realised I vigorously splay way too much and add way too much air, which means often the lather drys on my face. It creates lots of volume but is far too aerated. I need that wet sheen. The circular motion is more effective than going across the corrugations. Great tutorial.

Great information Chris. These have helped me. Are there any top soap bases that are lathered differently or is it all about the added water amount? What about a triple milled that is brush loaded - take it to the bowl and do the same?

I find that this method works well for about 95% of the soaps out there. If the soap is very soft you might have to use a little more product. Rather than fool with soaps that are finicky for me, I just get rid of them if they're in that 5% that doesn't respond well to my method. Life is too short to be annoyed by soap:)

It's a great bowl I think. I don't do anything special at all for my skin. I use the shaving products you see and then an artisan bath soap and that's it. Thanks for the kind words.

Harder soaps you can use less product, each soap base requires different amounts of water, by slowly adding it in like this video shows just keep going to your happy with what you see, just remember you can go too far and make it soupy

With many hard/puck soaps you can cut a small slice off the soap and squash into the lathering bowl, I find you only need half the amount, so a 1/4 teaspoon or about 1 to 1.5 gms. If the soap is too hard to slice or not sticky/pliable enough to squash into your bowl then you can perform a heavy brush load straight off the puck instead and then move to the bowl and proceed to lather.

@@IAMCDB If you find a cutting of Colonel Conk difficult to flatten and make stick to the bowl, it can be instead scraped with a knife and the shavings(or scrapings) are sticky enough to work with the way you would want.

I'm one of those who wanted to see you whip up one of those creme fraiche lathers of yours, so thanks. Even though I face lather and don't aim for that texture, I admire the results. Oh, and I remember now another thing I wondered about: Did you start hydrating more once you began straight edge shaving? I've heard that with straight edges, wetter is better.

Thanks so much Warren. Yes sir, I started pushing the hydration one I started straight razor shaving regularly. Prior to that I used a more pasty lather and it worked just fine for DE and SE razors. With straight razors the lather would dry out on one side of my face by the time I got to it. This is because early on it takes longer to do one side of your face than with a DE. So I'd be shaving one side and by the time I got to the other, the lather was drying out on me. I started adding more hydration to remedy this problem and realized the lather works better this way in all situations for me.

I have found that synthetic brushes work best for me when bowl lathering and produce a consistently great lather. I end up frustrated when using a fine badger brush. Those just do not work the same for me.

I prefer synthetic brushes as well. My theory is that the synthetic fiber is typically more thin in diameter and more consistent throughout the knot. I think this lends itself to easier lathering.

One of the things to do is not use too much pressure early on. The more you press down, the more air it adds to the lather. Also, maybe a little more hydration?

I would assume it would be easier to use shave gel, but no, gel isn't better. When you lather a soap properly the slickness,, glide, etc. are exceptional. Also, the ingredients in a soap like this is better for your skin.

I'm curious. I notice when you lather the soap this way, you only paint the soap on your face, you never really scrub the face with the brush. Does getting the soap to this high level of sheen really work well if you scrub the brush and soap into your face?

Point is you do not need to scrub. Spend maybe two or three minutes painting and wiping on the face and that will be enough to make the hair wet, absorb some water, and become softened. If the hair on face is long, then this is different. Some scrubbing would help to make the lather reach down to all the length of the hairs.

I take a shower and wash and scrub my face prior to the shave. Some people prefer to scrub with the brush and it's entirely ok if you do. I find my face responds better to a nice face washing prior to the shave, as opposed to a lot of scrubbing with a brush. Many people irritate their skin with too much brush scrubbing and then they go on to blame the razor or blade:)
