How to Make New Antique Bow Clips | Engels Coach Shop

We need old, original irons for this chuck wagon box we're building, but I don't have enough old wagon bow clips. So, I have to make new clips, but from original irons, hence we'll have the new, but antique, original bow clips we need. Building and restoring horse drawn vehicles comes with its challenges, but is most times obtainable.

Mr. Engels, even watching you dome rivets on these wagons is a great lesson. I've never had to work with rivets other than pop rivets, but after watching you I think I could do this as well as other craft work! Thanks for teaching!

What I find most interesting about watching you work is the old techniques used to create these functional works of art. I could see how a craftsman from the pioneer times could build these wagons using the limited tools available at the time.

Making new antiques - I learned that art with a wink as being "forging" when one of my first bosses, referring to himself providently as "furniture - forger", made four "antique" cupboards out of each baroque or renaissance or art nouveau one he found, because the law back then allowed calling a rebuild with at least a fourth original parts an "originally antique piece" - with the according price tag. They changed that law when "forging" became "restoring", as "restoration techniques" (which were nothing than that old forger's traditional craftsmanship) became a college grade .... Thanks for sharing!

Again, Mr. Dave, I want to thank you for the format that you use in presenting your videos. The background musical taste along with the volume is so conducive to making one pay attention, and I just love it. Also, I've noticed that you give better instruction on how to do things via hand motions than most others can by using their vocal chords. Thank you.

LOL! I must admit I was surprised to see those hex nuts going on & wasn't sure what was happening! Should have known they were just temporary "clamps" to hold things in place before riveting. I don't care how many times I've seen you complete a single task; each time I watch I learn something new and I'm never bored. Once again: thanks for allowing us along on this wonderful journey!

Geeez Dave, There's got to be an easier way of doing rivets. As you started attaching the first post to the side, I said he is going to use screws to attach the rest of the clamps. That sure is a lot of hammering but maybe the Pioneers did not have screws back in the day. Maybe Hilti makes a rivet that you could use. WOW!!!!

Like watching chips being made on a lathe, it's strangely satisfying watching rivets being set "old school." I forgive the use of the bolt cutter for trimming the rivets to length.
