Although this is beginner freestyle video but the acquiring such skills stretches from day 1 to around 1-2 months minimum (12 session of 1 hr each session /month) including proper breathing..for an average adult...(Fins are good so that you can concentrate on improving your other skills (such as stroke, timing, breathing, catch, torso, head movement, etc) but end of the day bad for achieving the same speed when you go back to your bare feet, only practicing on bare foot later will improve your natural swimming technique.)

Hi coach, Great video, and what a lovely setting to learn to swim in!! I just have a question about practice. I am a beginner who has only had about 9 half hour (weekly) lessons so far. At present I only get to practice for another hour or so each week. How can I maximise my practice sessions? Should I work on multiple things (e.g. arms/kicking/breathing) or one thing? I seem to be working on multiple things and don't seems to be getting anywhere. I still cannot side breathe and have to stop when I run out of air. Many thanks!

If you don’t feel like you’re making progress, I recommend either (or both) of the following to maximize your extra practice time. 1. Practice what your instructor taught you in the previous lesson. I can always tell when my students have been practicing what I recently taught them. It makes progress so much smoother because my curriculum builds off each step like you’re building a sturdy pyramid or climbing a ladder. 2. Ask your instructor what you’re going to learn in the next lesson and how you might be able to begin practicing on your own. These two things will make your instructor engage in your progress and enjoy the investment of time because it’s rewarding. Now you’re both holding one another accountable to your goals. I hope this helps! Feel free to text (WhatsApp) or email me for more questions; or go ahead and keep posting them right here! - Jonny Rocket (creator)

Thanks for the video. Tbh, I hate using a kickboard. When I first took swimming lessons, I noticed that I was just staying at one spot while kicking in water. Later my instructor told me that I had to kick really hard and my feet should make some visible splashes on the water in order for me to move. In another instance I was asked to use the kickboard and move to the middle of the pool and then turn to swim back to the starting point. Surely, I didn't know how to turn (I don't think I know even now) and thus when I reached the middle of the pool and attempted to turn back, I couldn't and started to panic and almost drown before my instructor rescued me (The lifeguard didn't notice and was probably busy watching others -_-). I am still trying to learn to swim properly and tbh not everyone can teach. I have taken 4 courses (each about 4-8 swim lessons) but the only thing I was able to learn perfectly was the back float, standing up from back float, kickboard stuffs (which I don't like tbh), front crawl and an inefficient form of freestyle. After a lot of self-practice in the pool and watching RU-vid videos (including yours), I have managed to become a little better at freestyle (at least now I can breathe on the side while previously I wouldn't be able to except choking in water). However, I still have a long long way to go. The thing is that when I swim using freestyle method (the only one I can do), I won't make it to the end of the pool...I would say I would probably go upto 15 ft max before my heart starts beating like hell. So at that point I would need quick short breathes (like when you are excercising) and it would become very difficult for me to turn on the side and take quick breathes every now and then as you turn your head on the side for a very short period. Sometimes I wouldn't be able to take a full breath and that would cause lactic acid to build up, eventually forcing me to stop and run out of breath. Sometimes, the timing of breathing would get totally messed up...if my lungs aren't completely empty (or say mostly empty), I would not be able to take a breath on the side and it would be very difficult to regain proper rhythm of breathing afterwards. This eventually leads to fatigue and panic (esp in deep water). In short, it's like a chain reaction for me...once it starts, everything gets messed up. Thus I never dared to go to the deep end of the pool alone coz I know I will probably fail and drown. I mean if I am not able to stay afloat at the deep end of the pool, I don't think I have learnt much and it is frustrating tbh. Regarding your idea of treading in water with the body bent forward, I tried it but I am unable to do the eggbeater kick while in that position. However, I will try to use my hands more vigorously as you said that not everyone will need to use their legs. Eggbeater and breaststroke kicks are both difficult (for treading). Moreover, I don't feel safe treading in deep water yet so I usually try at the shallow end. I discovered recently (from a RU-vid video) that treading in water can also be done by bringing the knees very close to the chest and then just use sculling motion with the hands...will try that to see if it makes any difference. Could you pleae make a video on how to swim with the head high in water? I know it's probably more difficult than regular swimming strokes but I was wondering like how do some people swim easily with their heads above the water? I mean say for instance, in third world countries people in villages (including kids) know how to swim and they swim in open water and surely nobody teaches them all these techniques that we normally use...I was wondering what methods do these people apply while swimming. I would like to learn swimming not only for fun but as a prep for life-saving skills...I mean in real life scenario, everyone needs to know how to survive / swim in open water or say for instance in murky water and I am not sure just swimming in the pool would help me achieve that. Please share your insight. Thanks. N.B. The wind was interfering with the recording of the sound and thus it was difficult to understand at times what was being said in the video.

If u dont move when you kick which also happened to me when I started learning freestyle, it's likely your toe pointing downward, try to flex your feet to point backward. You don't need to kick too hard but it should be assertive, try not to bend the knee too much, so you shoud feel that your leg are straight all the time and in reality it will bend a little bit.

Another tip is squezze your glute (bum cheek) to keep your legs not spray too wide

@@NguyenLe-sl1tr Yep I learnt that later, i.e. feet has to be flexed and maximum force should come from the thighs instead of the lower part of the legs.

Thanks for your comment! I'll try to answer it as detailed as possible. If you have any further questions feel free to reply, ok? 😁 1: Kickboard or other swim equipments are only there to help you practice one part of swimming. Kickboard will help you practice kick stronger. Splashing water is not an efficient way to kick. Your kicks should be graceful but powerful at the same time. You should try using fins to make your kicks stronger. Don't panic. Keep calm. Learn to Float on your back before you learn anything else. 2: Breathing is an essential skill but not easy for sure. I will highly suggest you to breath every 2-3 strokes from the beginning. Avoid the habit of holding your breath till you gasp because that's when beginners panic. Think of this process as normal as you breathe while doing daily tasks. Don't overthink. Just blow out the air under water and breathe on side and slightly behind you. Don't try to swim as fast as possible. Your first priority should be to get used to breathing properly. *When you breathe, make sure at least one of your hand is in front of you* to avoid sinking. 3: Swimming with head high in the water will strain your neck and spine. But if you really want to learn it, you can. Leave no stone unturned. When you keep your head above the water, it's natural that your lower body will start sinking. To prevent that you have to kick harder. Fins will be useful at this stage to practice. You'll can also use kickboard and buoy to practice this. It's like breaststroke but your head will always out of the water. It's difficult, painful but it'll give you clear view of what's around you. It's good for open water swimming in emergency situations. We will surely make video regarding this. 4: Treading water. We usually suggest to avoid treading water. Because it's too exhausting and not practical in any situations. Floating on your belly or back to survive will always be better in case of emergency situations. You can float all day but you can't tread water for more than 15 minutes without completely exhausting yourself. But, if you still want to learn, you should focus on your hands more than legs. We have treading water video in our channel that you can watch and practice 😊 Apologies for the wind noise. It's an open pool located on a hill. We are looking for good noice cancelling mic. I will really appreciate if you suggest one. 😁 Keep me posted on your progress, ok? Feel free to ask any questions. 😊 - Niraj (CDO)

@RocketSwimming
@RocketSwimming Год назад
Hi there! It's great that you're making progress in floating and kicking without a board. To move forward and improve your breathing, try these tips: Focus on proper body alignment in the water. Your head, hips, and feet should be in a straight line. Experiment with different arm strokes and kicking techniques to find what works best for you. Use a kickboard to help improve your kicking technique and build leg strength. Practice breathing exercises, such as blowing bubbles or counting to three before taking a breath. Try swimming with a snorkel to help you focus on breathing while swimming. Remember to always work at your own pace and have fun! Keep practicing and you'll see improvement in no time. - Niraj (CDO)

@RocketSwimming
@RocketSwimming 11 месяцев назад
Absolutely, I understand your concern. Overcoming the fear of raising your legs in water is a common challenge. Start by gradually moving to slightly deeper water while holding onto the edge or using a kickboard. As you get more comfortable, try kicking without the kickboard while holding onto the edge, and then progress to doing it in the open water. It's all about building confidence step by step. Keep practicing, and you'll make progress! 🏊‍♀️🌊

To swim faster, focus on improving your stroke efficiency, increasing your power through strength training, and working on your speed through interval training in the pool. Additionally, make sure to maintain good body position and streamline to reduce drag in the water.
