How To Legally Ship Cremated Remains in the United States 

I’ve delivered many of these boxes when I worked for the postal service. Definitely gave a different feeling when I got these . Definitely deliver with extra care. ❤

We used a few different companies and had keep sakes made from our son's ashes. They sent us packaging to ship the ashes to them. They also asked what to do with the ashes left over, one option was from them to scatter them, which we chose.

Thank you so much for doing this. I recently had my ex-husband's cremated remains sent to my son. He needed to be at his house to sign (he wasn't) and when he went to the post office he was a little surprised to see that the box was clearly marked as cremated remains. This information is important and you did a great job presenting it.

Cremation or Aquamation are definitely my preference. No need to dump all those chemicals and money in the ground, but it wouldn’t matter to me since I’ll be dead. Funerals are more for the surviving family to have closure.

When my sister’s cremains were shipped a person from the post office came in a car to deliver them, they were not delivered on the truck of our normal mail carrier. In my town they are personally delivered.

When I used to work at a pet cemetery years ago we would ship the cremated remains UPS which was probably illegal lol.

I picked up my dad's cremated remains from the funeral home. The box was in a little plastic bag with the funeral home information on it. They were in a heavy plastic bag that was folded over and tied shut with two heavy zip ties. It was put in a regular cardboard box that was taped up with plastic packing tape. No cremated remains information anywhere on it. It had a printed label that had his name, birth date and death date and that label was taped to the outside of the cardboard box. There was no paperwork of any kind with it. I brought it home with me in my truck and when I made arrangements with the cemetery sexton, I took the box up to the cemetery and they had dug a round hole in the burial space beside mommas casket. It looked like it was dug with a hand held post hole digger about two feet deep. I took the bag out of the box and removed the zip ties and poured the ashes into the hole and cut the label off the box and put it into the hole on top of the dust. My dad believed in the "dust to dust" scripture in the Bible and didn't want any waste or extra money spent to bury him. My question is, was the paperwork from the funeral home required for me to legally transport his remains from Iowa to Missouri and back? I was kind of on auto pilot on the way back home and threw the box and bag in a convenience store trash can when I stopped for gas and supper on the way home. Hi beautiful, I’m living in Australia, my uncle passed away in Seattle ( a couple of years ago now) I organised trough the nursing home, they send his ashes back to Hungary where we from…they only able to send to a funeral home…❤️ they organised everything for me…

When shipping humains in a temporary container when use the priority mail Express box which is just slightly bigger then temporary container. Is about half a pound less and with Express prices it can save you money and we have a roll of the cremated remain stickers. The post office offers two kits and one of them has bubble wrap in it so be sure to order the right when they're both free

Am I the only one from a family with undertakers on both sides, and still have relatives that have a bunch of the temporary cremated remains boxes serving various functions around the house? lol these types of cremated remains containers currently hold my mail. I just now thought that might not be normal. lol

That’s a pretty huge box for cremated remains. Ahhhh…now I can see why they give so much tape. In Hawaii when I used to work at a funeral home we had to out a copy of the death certificate I’m glad that our crematories use those thick plastic. Would your mortuaries there offer this service for families? I’m glad your doing these kind of videos. So helpful for people to listen too. Thank you.

I'm wondering how to handle smaller amounts of cremated remains. We will be having a celebration of lives for my parents, and then I was hoping to allow their siblings (who live all over the country) to take small biodegradable urns (6 oz or less) home with them to plant or release. Is it better to pack it in their suitcase or ship them?

Kari, what concerns me is not so much the part about having it shipped. It's whether the ashes are really from the deceased person or someone else.

My mom had her dad in the attic for a while, these bags weaken over time but he died a few decades ago - I never met him. When we got him down, the bag failed all over the floor it was funny for about two seconds

What if the package gets lost? What happens then?

Ms. Kari, If you're traveling by air with cremains do you have to package your love one in the same way, are you allowed bring the urn or container aboard the aircraft with you. If so would there be an extra fee if you wish to do so? I would want hold them not place them in the overhead if its allowed.

I work at DHL and they won't ship cremated remains. This seems like a lot of work to ensure the safety of the cremated remains, but it is doable. Thank you for sharing, Kari.

Is it legal to use these boxes to send other stuff? Because if there's one box nobody wants to steal or throw into the truck,, it would be one of these.

What is the insurance value on sending cremated remains? Are these packages handled differently by the USPS? It would be interesting to see the background handling.

Go figure it has to stay with the USPS, then again there is worse, way worse! Come to think of it, when I think about cremated remains I think I would rather have the USPS ship them. That’s on a federal level.

I live in Illinois, to my knowledge (I've never had remains sent to me or have had to send any so this is possibly just lack of knowledge on my part) we don't have to have anything detailing what is in the box like "Cremated Remains". We have 2 crematories in the town that I live in so I'm guessing we just go pick it up at the funeral home. With that said I can't account for in or out going Cremated Remains that would be shipped elsewhere. I guess what I am wondering is, is it required to prevent loss or to alert the USPS that it is Cremated Remains because some may not wish to carry and deliver because of the nature of the parcel? And even though it is Cremated Remains is it still considered BIO even though there is no bodily fluids present in this state?

Cremating and burying my mothers ashes a couple years ago I was surprised they only bury 2-3 feet below the surface and not below the frost line. Is this due to not having to worry about a casket breaching or exploding? It seems it should be buried 6 feet down to prevent it lifting to the surface or being exposed in heavy rains or floods. Recently a lot of caskets were washed away off a hill after long rains caused mud slides after prolonged rains.

This is awful to say, but my mom said, take the gold caps out of my mouth befor they cremate me. If that a thing??

I actually know of someone, who has done this. The person was mailed to Georgia, from Pennsylvania.

How does it work when you're traveling with cremated remains

I haven't worked for a FH for many decades-when cremation wasn't popular. The thought crossed my mind about shipping cremated remains to families who've paid for direct cremation, but did not make arrangements for final dispo nor retrieve them after multiple attempts at contacting them. Otherwise, the burden is on the FH to make the decision to hand cremated remains over to medical examiner-coroner for disposition. Abandoned cremated remains is becoming commonplace & a headache for FH's. Shipping cremated remains to a residence without the family's knowledge would appear somewhat immoral & insensitive.

Is that true also to animal remains

The last time I had one of my animals cremated was about this time last year. His name was Rocky AKA Rock-N-Roll 🌈💔🕊️. I was VERY upset that the vets office/cremation facility (it was a mobile vet not 🚫 our regular one) shipped my best friend though the mail & the person who delivered it did not knock! Just left him on my front porch! ANYONE could have taken the package!😱 The contents would be worthless to the person who stole it but, soul crushing for me if lost. It was also raining & the box got wet! They didn't even care to put it in a plastic bag.😡 From now on I will INSIST that my pet be delivered to the vet where I KNOW there will be someone there to receive them. 💖 🤘

My grandmother died a few weeks ago and We had her cremated and sent off in one of those special USPS boxes. We think that's what killed her.
