Also, by educating the public about what you do, I know for me, it has helped in my healing with the loss of my husband. God bless you, sweet lady. There's also an incision for the embalming. I found this out when I brought a beautiful outfit for my mom in her favorite color of blue. But instead of saying no they made it work, by putting it higher up and drapping it a certain way. I was quite impressed and she looked lovely.

When my mom passed away, the funeral home was wonderful about letting her wear her most beautiful outfit. It was a black and shiny silver formal outfit. It had short sleeves and her arms were beautiful in it. Fortunately, she didn't have any marks or bruising. Her silver hair matched her outfit perfectly.

We buried my Dad in his dress green Army uniform. When I took everything to the funeral home I had an awful panic attack because we had forgotten his underwear. Thankfully the funeral home director helped calm me down and told me they kept new underwear on hand just for that reason. Dad had a heart attack and I spent 4 days in the hospital with him and refused to leave him or my Mom. I was going on about a week of no sleep. I’m so thankful he put his uniform together with all his medals etc. I stared at them hanging in the closet of my now room for many years knowing that the next time he would wear them would be his last time. Thank you for doing this video. It helps so much to be prepared. Daddy’s funeral was pre planned. All I had to do was add music and write his obituary

I remember picking my Grandpa's suit, shirt & tie, mainly because I just needed to get away from everyone for a few minutes to absorb & start to process everything that was going on (prolonged illness & he passed at home, that will be 30 years January 2nd). Mom, Grandma & one of my aunts came in, agreed with what I had chosen then pulled out his watch, underwear/socks & wondered if they needed shoes or not... Of course with Mom, we took up her dress but forgot the underwear, apparently, the funeral director said that if they don't have underpants, they will just use depends under the clothes. This is why it would be a good idea for funeral directors to leave a card with the families when they do removals listing what to bring with them to the funeral home when they come to make arrangements if they're planning on having a viewing because with my father in law, I called & asked 'what do we need to bring with' & wrote it down as the secretary told me.

You are funny sometimes, I know that you are ask such simple questions, but I’m sure it’s no surprise. There are people that just don’t know and maybe haven’t experienced a death that they have to bring in the clothes. I got the clothes for my mom and sister, I even ironed the outfit for my mom. I picked out jeans, long sleeve shirt and her biker vest for my sister. My sister was a victim of domestic violence and with all the trauma she had, she had the plastic undergarments on. I truly love your videos and it has help me to make a decision on what I want for myself at the time of death.

I've noticed a remarkable change in how families want to have their loved ones dressed. 50 years ago, men were dressed in suits & women in fancy dresses. I would inform them that short sleeve or spaghetti strap gowns exposed too much & that high neck dresses, blouses, & shirts would look better. FH's would offer burial shrouds (open back gowns & suits) for sale for families whom didn't have the time to shop. Whenever full couch caskets were selected, I would ask families to bring shoes, panty hose & socks since the entire body is usually on display. Today I'm seeing more people dressed in T-shirts, basketball/football jerseys & ball caps. Nose & lip rings are becoming more popular for those with multiple piercings. Styles & trends have changed.

Hi Kari! Could you do a video more on caskets or “casket shopping”? Take us through the showroom show different models and prices, legacy boxes and tubes ets. How they lock, the gasket/no gasket controversy, handles , hardware etc. Mattress, pillows, blankets, just run the gambit if you could.Caskets can be works of art and I don’t know if enough time is spent on them especially since we only see them maybe 2 days and it’s taboo to start examining it during a viewing lol. When my best friend passed away, the shirt that brought up to the funeral home for her, was somewhat see-through a little bit. You could see the bandage from the autopsy underneath it. The funeral home never said anything about it. I kind of wish they would have that way her shirt could have been changed.

When my Dad's biological mom passed away the funeral home told the family that they needed to take the dirty clothes they brought up there back home and bring her clean clothes to be buried in. My dad always wore bib overalls and flannel shirts. So when he passed and we where going through his cloths to find something for him to wear when we got to the overalls that’s what’s we picked. He had a snotty sister who we knew we would have an issue with so on the day of the funeral I went straight up to her and told her what we did and nipped it in the bud. No issues then. When my mom passed last Jan I was asked to bring clothes and bra and underpants. I gave her mine as couldn’t get in senior living as quarantine for Covid. I also have her a dress I had never used that I bought for my daughters wedding. It was teal lace and lovely. She looked beautiful. It had 3/4 sleeves and her arms were swollen but not hands? I didn’t think of sleeve length. I did notice neck of dress was pulled up more also. Did a lovely job on hair and nails all free of charge since I didn’t see my Mom during her ten months on hospice due to Covid regulations in senior living. When my mom died my sister and I went to Mom's closet to pick out her clothes. We picked about 4 dresses before we found one that was clean (the others had been put away dirty). So it ended up being one she wore but didn't like much due to the colours. Then we couldn't find a bra for her but found a slip. We figured pantyhose didn't matter and totally forgot about panties! And trying to find shoes that weren't falling apart was impossible so she got to be buried in her slippers. Totally forgot to send her favourite lipstick but sent a photo so at least the mortician had an idea how to do her hair and makeup. Sometimes it's a struggle.

Hi Kari - thank you for the great videos - you do a great job presenting interesting information on a topic I must admit still creeps me out a bit...and I'm 68 😊 Thought you might get a chuckle from what happened when my dad passed. It may seem disrespectful to some but that was never the intent - we had to work with what we had...and I still think my father got a kick out of it because he was always joking, making off the cuff remarks that would send me into fits of laughter - a lot I still laugh at to this day. So my mother decided to not have a viewing for my dad (just being honest - that was honestly a huge relief for me anyway). So we pick out clothing - suit, shirt, etc. - everything we thought was needed - and sent it off to the funeral home. My mother always liked to keep busy so we went ahead and gathered his clothes and donated them. The day before my dad's funeral the Funeral Director called and said they needed pants (trousers). When we sent the suit - we thought there were pants on the hanger along with the jacket...but no - we didn't realize that. We had to think fast - no time to shop. I produced a pair of clean jeans from my suitcase - my dad was smaller than me so we knew they would fit and took them to the funeral home. So my beloved Daddy has pants and is resting wearing a pair of "Just My Size" (you know, fluffy girls ' pants) ladies jeans. 😊

😆🤣 he left you with his humor - I feel you on the joking part that may be distasteful to some 🤷 My husband HATED Christmas, I mean, loathed it. He felt like no one really honored the true spirit of it anymore. He said there was so much pressure and worry centered around gifts and money. He passed away suddenly and unexpectedly on Christmas Eve. In my mind, as I was alone with him for a while in the funeral home; I jokingly said, well I guess that was your final f-you to Christmas! 😬😳😆🤭 I guarantee you he laughed and agreed. Humor, imo, helps heal the heart a little and keeps our loved ones alive with happiness and a smile 💖🙏🥰

@@charlotte_stevens I am so sorry for your loss Charlotte. Thank you for understanding our goofy story. And thank you for sharing your story about your husband - I'll bet he did have a good laugh with you at your great remark and thinks of it often. I totally agree with you about humor. It still helps me when I think of my mother too. She had Alzheimer's which essentially took her from us about 6 months before she passed. My mother was the sweetest, most loving and caring person I ever knew. They lived at a facility which included assisted living and an Alzheimer's unit. Before that disease hit she did a lot of volunteer work and always very respectfully spoke of the people in that particular unit. My mother was intelligent, however, a bit ditzy - and she laughed with us when we were amused by what she did or said and instead of that terrible Alzeimer's it those times and her personality are the things I cherish when I think of her.

@@charlotte_stevens Thank you Charlotte. You are so sweet and kind! Cruel is a very fitting word for Alzheimers. And yes, the memory does come and go as well as moods. My mother didn't go through that moodiness much, thank goodness, as that can be rough on everyone. I credit her sweet personality with her nearly always being happy and smiling. And we would talk and talk - wherever she led the conversation. I thought that was best for her. One more quick story (sorry! 😊). One day we were hanging out in the day room and having our usual type conversation and she looked at me and asked "Do you remember the time I caught you smoking downtown?" (I was 14 when she saw me in front of Woolworth's with a cig). When she said that I was SO shocked? My sister (who didn't know that even happened) just died laughing as I sat there feeling so embarrassed and sort of ashamed because of the look my mother was giving me. LOL I love her so much. My father died last year and my sisters (half) wanted to view him before the cremation so we arranged it. My mom their stepmom did not attend. The staff asked for an outfit to be brought in. My mom said no it wasn’t necessary (dad was wearing the hospital gown). I had to get in touch with my sisters and have them bring clothing without my mothers knowledge. He wore a Toronto blue jays T-shirt (meaningful for him) sweats and socks. That wasn’t the only weird thing my mother did while we made the arrangements.

Hi Kari, and Happy New Year! I'm pre-planning, and I know I want direct cremation. I understand a cardboard box is customary. I bought several (more then 2) meters of pure cotton cloth to be used to cover my body, leaving my face exposed so my adult children can say goodbye. I will discuss this with my funeral home and arrange with them how/who stores the yardage. Have you had any requests like this (A drape or winding sheet instead of clothing)? If so, I'd like to hear about it. I pray your New Year is fulfilling, healthy, and better than last year. I've been there, a single mom with 3 children, ages at the time were 16, 12, and 10. It took a lot of work (and counseling for me) to maintain balance in my life and have a safe space to vent. I'm a grandma now. I do not contact my ex, I've forgiven him & moved on. I promise it gets better with time. I was fortunate to have a great job, and wonderful kids. Take good care of you and your sweet girls. One day at a time, Kari. Hugs from California.

Kari, what if the person wanted to be buried naked and there will be no viewing at all or closed casket? I never thought about that issue until several years ago when my wife and I were having dinner with another couple who were friends of ours. Earlier that day we had gone to a "wake" together and we started talking about such things. The lady said burying corpses in clothes is foolish because it's a waste of clothing and "we all look alike to the worms anyway." She said she was going to be buried that way. we all laughed but she said she was serious. She is a tree-hugger hippie chick but I never thought of it since until I just saw this. Do you ever get requests like that?

How about religious clothing requirements?
@charlotte_stevens
@charlotte_stevens 2 года назад
That's a good question. My husband was Mormon. His mother wanted him to be buried in temple garments. I know my hubby would probably have preferred to wear a TOOL t-shirt (his fave band) but because it was so important to his mom, I agreed to the religious clothing. I placed a TOOL t-shirt beside him instead. I had never seen temple garments before...not gonna lie, they were strange. He was wearing all white with a green apron 🤔🤷💖 I also put some photos of us in with him, a letter that I wrote, drawings that our little children did for him. I think my favorite item was the 7-duece offsuit from a deck of cards. He was an avid poker player and I guess that's the worst starting hand you can have. He always loved it when someone bluffed with those cards and won a big pot. Oh, I miss him so very much. Thanks for listening lol. Happy Holidays 🥰🌟😍

I helped the funeral director, apprentice, & I, dressed my Mom. She wore a beautiful black suit/skirt, they said no bra. I put pullups on here knee high nylons, & Packers scuffs, that my siblings never knew were on her. Being a hair stylist, I did her hair. A friend made a satin scarf instead of a blouse. Even without makeup she looked like a queen. I went early as the funeral director had to take her to their other funeral home. The meeting prior to this, was terrible. Youngest sibling paid nothing. 2 were upset as after awhile the funeral home started to add interest. They called & very nicely said they had to. I said, well it's business & of course you should. That was 2013..... No money is ever given for cemetery decor. Needless to say, we don't speak. A lot of Mom's family members are in the same cemetery. I do about 15, grave spots. It's very peaceful & I enjoy doing it. My sweet cousins, prior to spring I ask what colors they want. They always say everything you do is gorgeous, pick whatever you like. They are gracious ladies. Dressing Mom was probably the most peaceful moment I had with her. The funeral director asked if I wanted a photo with her in the prep room. I said yes, not appropriate for a smile. I stood by the cart & just looked at her. It's priceless...... your talks are all great ....
