Holy shit, I remember Ice talking about this technique a couple of years ago and I can specifically recall him talking about having to taunt to prevent your character from falling offstage.

Fun facts: - Your momentum is cancelled if you edge teeter. So Peach's dsmash and Doc's dtilt don't even need the taunt or spot dodge. - Due to ECB updates, Falcon's knee is almost impossible (except for Puff and 4 low-tiers) to Amsah tech when fresh or partially staled. It requires a frame perfect (1 extra frame leniency when fresh) SDI with a precise angle that depends on your damage.

i've played this game for almost 20 years, and i consistently am surprised and amazed at the level of bullshittery and awesomeness that it exudes. melee is fucking sick.

I just see a fox down smashing a Falcon. Falcon floor hugs, tech rolls, does three spot dodges. The fox grabbed the ledge during Falcons roll and rockcrocks his recovery anyway lol.

The depth of Melee is insane. Moral of the story, work 18 hour days and get the thing done in 10 months for the perfect fighting game.

I'm very surprised he didn't mention how this tech is referred to as amsah teching by the community, or how you can fastfall and grab ledge after doing it. I don't know if it works all the time or if your knockback has to be reduced to a certain amount, but as Falcon I feel like you'd almost always want to grab ledge then ledgehop back with an invincible move or ledgedash rather than any of the options he has to stay onstage.

although a follow up to the d-smash might've been a good option for fox, falcon is able to mix up his rooting with a punch, a taunt and a dodge. i await the day in which this is common knowledge and everyone plays like anime fights.

What is the main difference between a tdi floorhug and an amsah tech? From my experience, you get the same result just by doing an amsah tech and then fast falling right when you slide off stage to immediately grab the ledge.

Is there any way to figure what moves have the rooted property for characters so I know what options I have with different characters?

Can characters with a neutral charging special move like mewtwo or Samus just hold charge until releasing to live forever instead of doing multiple spot dodges?

Quick question: Say you are down smashing a sheik after she recovers on stage and she hits tdi, tech rolls, and starts performing spotdodges to root herself/ cancel the momentum. While she is spot dodging, can you just put out a lingering hitbox over her vulnerability at the end of her 2nd spotdodge and kill her no matter what because she already pressed L to spotdodge previously? I could have something wrong here but wouldnt it be more optimal to aim for the 1 frame taunt input because then you get 100 frames of being rooted and then only have to try to tech the opponent's move on reaction?

Who knew optimal play might include spotdodging 8 times lol

You can reduce the number of spotdodges you need to perform by inputting a fast fall then letting go to quickly snap to ledge even with a bunch of momentum.
