I agree with your concept to a point. Most of those dealing with PCOS deal with other conditions including hypothyroidism and insulin resistance as well, including myself. When I eat a modest meal more than 3 hours before bed, I either wake up in the middle of the night sweating, shaking and my sugar is too low or I wake the next morning with a pounding headache. How can I find a balance, of too much or too little before I go to bed?!

If you're taking metformin maybe your dose is too high

This can be a tough problem to solve. It sounds like you have a real problem with blood sugar balance. Have you seen your doctor recently and had labs run to determine your blood sugar levels, like fasting glucose, Hemoglobin A1c ("A1c"), etc.?? Something that has worked for others is to break up that small meal in half, and eat the last part about an hour before bed. But eating anything late like that, just before bedtime, can lead to heartburn, GERD and other digestive problems. It can be a balancing act, for sure. For your best benefit, you should see your doctor(s) and tell them about this symptom. It's important to get help from your health and medical team about this before it gets any worse.

That's a consideration. Best for her to check in with her doctor and take it from there.

There are quite a few reasons for sugar cravings. If you eat anything that is sweet or has added sugar, eliminate it to see it it helps. For many people sugar cravings are reduced or eliminated when they stop eating sugar. I hope you find help with your health. Many people have been helped by fasting, whether it is intermittent fasting, the fasting mimicking diet, or water fasting.

so, here's my story. I have PCOS. I started my fitness/ healthy lifestyle about a year ago. I change my eating habits completely by eating clean. complex carbs, lean proteins, healthy fats. I workout 4-5 days a week. intense workouts not just your everyday cardio. I lost 20 lbs I'm happy with it and now I'm working on toning up. however, I still struggle with the little fat in my abdomen area. I drink lots of water, eat 5-6 times a day. I still don't know what else to do to loose this fat. I take metformin 500mg once daily and prenatal vitamins. what am I doing wrong????? #sos

Congrats Yarelys for the big lifestyle changes. That's the hardest part. I encourage you to stick with what works for you. Belly fat can be the hardest to lose. Either intermittent fasting or a ketogenic diet usually works for most people. But you know what? Acknowledge yourself for the heatlhier habits you now have and don't worry about the little fat in the abdomen area. You're doing good work!

Do you think your weight loss has helped your PCOS?

But what about intermittent fasting and exercising in that window? It's usually recommended to delay breakfast and workout in the time of fasting. Fasting also increases insulin sensitivity and increases HGH which is connected to fat burn. What are your thoughts on this?

Great question. But I think that break-fast without a carbs is the best way to get down your fat and of course exercise.

Intermittent fasting can work well especially if it's hard to lose weight and to lose excess fat in particular. Exercising after waking up and before eating breakfast does extend the time window of fat-burning. And delaying breakfast, or skipping breakfast altogether, which extends the fat-burning time window. Anything that improves insulin sensitivity is a step in the right direction.

Eat foods that are nutrient dense, satisfying and leave you feeling energized, not sleepy, drained, and tired. Focus on leafy green vegetables and high fiber foods, lean protein, healthy fats, resistant starch, slow-burning, complex carbohydrates like lentils and chickpeas.

There research to support that when a person is in fat burning mode through the early hours of the morning (in sleep), this continues on waking into the morning, and sticking with fats and proteins if you are to break-fast, throughout the early and middle parts of the day is much more beneficial to continued fat loss and stable energy, i.e. the body is more 'fat adapted' as opposed to latching on to ingested glucose (i.e. breakfast quick energy options like cereal) and fat burning mode is then lost for the rest of the day? Thoughts on Intermittent Fasting would be welcomed.

Hi Cath. Your ideas here are correct. That's why the typical break-fast of cereal or bread of some kind can really stop fat burning and therefore weight loss for women with PCOS. BTW - This also applies to men. Intermittent fasting can be a fine way to go for sustaining fat loss and losing weight in a safe, sustainable manner. I have used used it with patients to their benefit.

I think it would have been good to touch on the balance between what you said and the topic of intermittent fasting. As it gives the idea that you HAVE to eat as soon as you wake up.
@DrBeverlyYates
@DrBeverlyYates 7 лет назад
Intermittent fasting stretches out the time between when you eat the last food of the day, say 5:00 PM dinner, and when you eat the next meal, say 11:00 AM, for an 18 hour fast, as an example. There are some helpful books on the topic, check out The Complete Guide to Fasting - amzn.to/2vf9Ra5

You can try green coffee, as long as the caffeine doesn't keep you from sleeping well. Some people find coffee, including green coffee, helpful for weight loss. PCOS can be tricky, but the green coffee is worth a try.
