I think for most snow blowers this method is fine and there's no need to remove the auger assembly unless you are already doing a repair that required you to take it out in the first place. Now if you have an older Toro with the drum auger you might want to consider removing the auger assembly lubing the shaft. I did spray some PB Blaster in the appropriate areas hoping it seeped in well.

Yup, gearbox is about $350 to buy that while unit, but the worm gear is about $35 and that's what you'll strip if you catch something in there and the pins don't shear. That unit only takes a few hours to disassemble and repair with basic tools.

@okanaganpeterjames

I have a brand new machine this year, a troybilt. Probably ran it 4 times and today when brushing the machine off i noticed a very tiny bit of grease coming from where you mention in this video at the gear box seal on the auger shaft. not dripping or anything but when cleaning i noticed a slight big of grease visible there. Is it normal for tiny bits of grease to work past that seal or should be be completely dry? I wiped with paper towel and it is definitely grease so not any of the lubrication i have sprayed on the auger itself. Again it is the tiniest bit of grease visible between the plastic bushing and the gearbox itself. Thank in advance, love your videos always.

A two stage is a bit overkill for the size of property. 4 car driveway + 100ft of sidewalk, all concrete, that's it. What you think about the toro 821 qze?
@GarageGear
@GarageGear 5 месяцев назад
Hey Blackhawk. How much snow do you get per year in your local area?
@robertknight4672
@robertknight4672 5 месяцев назад
Sometimes the powered wheels are nice since very few single stage machines have power going to the wheels of the exception of the Toro snowmaster series. There was a time when 21 inch two-stage machines where more common. I have an old Toro 521 which is great for some of the narrower walkways and the side of my house where the oil tank is filled. A single stage wouldn't work very well next to my house and it would probably tear up the grass.

Awesome video as always JB! ❤ I've finally purchased a lot of Fluid Film to do exactly this on my snowblower 😋 And I think its funny you mentioned in the very end that some have mounted zerks, I've vaugely looked on that as well, but feels like the best is to remove the whole assembly to do it.. lots of work, but could be very useful to have nice sticky grease in there instead of fluid film. What do you think? Which is the best, fluid film or grease? I think you've said grease is better for the gearbox at least - even though it can "fling away" from the gears.
@GarageGear

Father forgive me for I have sinned :-( I just discovered your channel this year and I am WAY behind the 8 ball trying to play catchup on several things. Case in point, I have a 30 inch Craftsman that I am in the middle of doing just this procedure to but I am stuck (Thank God its been in the 50s in Milwaukee!). Three of the six sheer pins are seized in. I was planning on taking a bigger hammer to them today but worried about damaging the auger gear box. Was there a particular drill bit you used to drill them out? I also saw someone use an air hammer. I don't have one but might look into renting one. Any extra details on getting seized sheer pins out would be appreciated.
@milesvinson
@milesvinson 5 месяцев назад
@JB An alternative method to remove those seized pins: step 1) apply Kroil or other penetration oil; step 2) find deep well socket just slightly larger than the head of the sheer pin; step 3) find C-clamp longer than length of socket + diameter of auger shafts; step 4) place socket over head of pin; step 5) place C-clamp on end of socket and small end of sheer pin; step 6) tighten C-clamp forcing the pin out.
@GarageGear
@GarageGear 5 месяцев назад
Hey MA! Welcome to the tribe! I would recommend just drilling them out. An air hammer may be too rough and bend your augers. I actually started with thinner bits and slowly worked my way up. About 4 bits later they came out! Shear pins are made of soft metal so they drill out easily! 👍
