In the video "How to make a better voltage of Zinc Battery (zinc hexacyanoferrate)" I show you how to made a zinc hexacyanoferrate battery with higher voltage.
The zinc hexacyanoferrate battery was made by many people like Robert, Kev, Dan,.... But I decided that I will try to make some modification on this type of battery.
MAKE IT:
Positive electrode:
- carbon fiber current collector
- zinc hexacyanoferrate active material
- carbon black conductive material
- zinc sulfate 1 mol "positive electolyte"
Separator:
- a dual electrolyte membrane or in my case I use Celgard 2400 (the separator you can also find in Li-ion batteries)
Negative electrode:
- zinc
- potassium hydroxide 1 mol and zinc oxide 0.5g or less

Well done Dusan. Probably a filter paper Seperator could not be used as a substitute to the Li-ion seperator, cause it is eaten away by the KOH , right ? Any other Substitute from common household materials ? Many thanks. Regards, Stefan.

overunitydotcom I‘d use nafion or nascion membranes for this, filter paper won‘t work, but indeed you could make a membrane from materials you find in your household, for example glue and sodium silicate...or peg and glue... I will explain how it works with sodium silicate, first on you will need clear, solvent free polyvinyl alcohol based glue, take 60ml of the glue and 20ml of a 36% sodium silicate solution, when mixed you will get a semi-crosslinked organic-silicon polymer composite, squeeze it a bit in your hands and redissolve in fresh water to get a final volume of 80ml, heat the solution for this. Dry the solution in a petri dish at 60-70C (not below and not above, very important, else it either won‘t crosslink or you won‘t be able to remove the film). After the film has dried carefully remove it from the petri dish and soak it in a 1-2M sodium hydroxide solution for a few hours, this will make it insoluble in any solvent and fully crosslinked, if it has to be transparent treat it with a multivalent salt. Soak the membrane in a 10% NaCl solution for a couple hours ans voila! There are several other ways to crosslink pva though, for example citric acid, PEG, polycondensation etc

I bought Celgard (for Li Ion batteries) on eBay but I can't get it to work with aqueous electrolytes. Evidently, Celgard needs to be coated with a special wetting agent for use with aqueous electrolytes. The only Celgard I got to work is the piece I got from RMS's battery kit. Robert said in one video that it is indeed coated with a wetting agent. If that piece you took from the Li- ion battery works in aqueous media it must be coated with something. Am I right in this?

William Hada In your case I‘d try to wet it with ethanol and wash it with water, this way the membrane gets hydrophilic

As an engineered product maybe the pores are specifically sized for lithium ion. And they very small.

Really nice ! You do good in double electrolyte combinations ! Do u remember how many amps the battery gave ? And is it still recharging and running now ... ?

Hydroxide electrolyte promotes dendrites on the zinc electrode. This shortens the lifetime considerably

So if you ad some Formic acid to the other side maybe you get 2.7?

But what I found is greater is the difference of the ph more voltage you get. But in this battery I was focused into materials that are not so dangerous and not hard to find.

The problem is that not each electrolyte will not work reverse. And you will end up with a primarily battery

@@cayrex Thsnk you for the quick reply. I will like you to repeat this very experiment but using a Redox Flow system. Build the 2 ion exchange cells and use Zinc Hexacyanoferrate + Graphite mixtures as the active materials for Cathode and KOH + ZnO as the active materials for the Anode. I will donate some money towards this experiment.

I do not understand what you mean. You want a cell in flow system? That you have two tanks of electrolyte, some pumps and that the electrolyte is circling?
