How to Make a Belt Sander Holder for Your Lathe - Tiny and Simple!

I often have to polish a cylindrical piece, not only for any surface oxide but also to get within tolerance by eliminating cents at a time; (bearings)
Certainly placing your hands or gloves near the rotating spindle is not safe, you can do it 999 times without problems but the 1000th time could be fatal and it's not better to push your luck!
So I decided to build a simple and useful sandpaper holder, to work safely when you need to sand the surface of a piece; the belt width of only 13 mm allows it to enter narrow shoulders.
When the area in contact with the part is worn due to contact, simply turn the thumb wheel to move the paper to another unworn area.
In the first version of the drawing I had thought of a torsion spring, to keep the belt in position: it had remained in stand-by because I didn't have the elastic thread stiff enough at home, however I then noticed that the self-locking nut was sufficient and therefore I decided for simplicity !!
A definite limitation of this device is the possibility of getting close to the spindle, the piece must protrude by at least 30 mm from the spindle, while for long pieces there are no problems!
I would like to make some modifications to the finished piece, but it always happens like this !!

Good morning everyone, I built a simple support for polishing the cylindrical surfaces on the lathe, it is useful to avoid getting close to the piece with gloves (not in safety) but also to remove cents for the assembly of a bearing for example.( it also depends on the grit of the sandpaper, 80,240,400 etc)

Ciao Robert, thanks for your kind comment: you know, the first concern for a RU-vidr is certainly to propose something interesting (simply what i did in my workshop) but then you also have to try not to get bored and that is often more difficult!! Ciao Robert, see you soon !! Alberto

Ciao Alberto. That is an interesting solution to a common problem. We are all guilty in placing our fingers too near a revolving chuck whilst attempting to obtain that perfect ‘ground’ finish with sand paper or emery paper. Nicely designed and expertly crafted. Thank you for sharing. 👏👏👍😀

Ciao Andrew! Thanks for your super comment! There is a company nearby who said me they will make a "giant" version of my device for their parallel lathes, which makes me very happy! I tried to minimize the number of components and make them as simple as possible! I'm proud you liked it!! 😀 See you soon dear Andrew, ciao and have a nice weekend! Alberto

Very clever construction. Still it means you will have a lot of grit on your lathe ways and in the other parts as well. Thanks for the video keep on keeping on.

Another novel innovative idea. I've always been a little weary of applying sand paper directly to a turning part. You may be able to add a spring belt tensioner, and a spindle to attach a drill motor so the belt also turns.... I've seen similar devices with grinding wheels...

Hi Jeremiah, thanks: yes i made this simple device for that reason, it very dangerous or it can be; i have alsways a big respect of the lathe, my Colchester Bantam lathe is 3 kw so...it would take my arm not only my hand.. in case! Yes i was thinkg about the motor too !!

Very Interesting project Alberto. I could have used this yesterday while fitting a bearing to a shaft. Just needed .001 off the diameter. Since we all sand on our lathes, this looks to be safer then holding the paper by hand. 👍

@ab-shop
@ab-shop Год назад
Alberto.

Why don't you just buy a shitty Chinese lathe if you're just going to spray abrasive dust all over the machine? you should never put abrasives near your lathe.

Hi, I understand your thought and thanks for your comment: keep in mind however that I always clean my lathe after using it, I hate lathes full of chips everywhere and dirt, but ok it's always my point of view; I used to use sandpaper by hand to get to tolerance for the bearing seats but I don't do it often and I also don't back up the guides tons of glass!!
