Hi Jennifer, these look great I may not have enough time this year but maybe next year. Depending on fabric, those cathedral openings would look fab done in a contrast/co-ordinating/variagated thread using satin decorative stitch!

Hey.... one trick I've learned for myself. For the edge of fabric used for the opening to turn... Both top and bottom fabrics... I do a long stitch at the same seam allowance... then I sandwich and enclose and then turn right sides out. This gives me a nice easiest line to bring my seam together to sew closed. The long stitch thread can easily be removed. I especially use this trick when I do the self binding baby blankets to make sure the closure lines up. I like exactness.

+Shabby Fabrics Hi Jennifer, if you were to use your method in a table runner how would you finish off the edges of the triangles you stuck down with glue, because that's taken care of in the ornament as you add the backing??? I really like your method but can't think how to solve the rough, long part the triangles and then join the blocks together. I do hope you can do a tutorial soon, I think many fans would love it too!!! :-) Hugs, Conchita

Yes! There is no reason that wouldn't work! If you want the cushion to be one big Cathedral Window (versus multiple pieced together) you may want something that is more than twice as big :)

Just discovered your tutorials thanks to a link someone shared on Facebook. In this video you mention sizing rather than starch. Is sizing something you purchase or make? If purchased, what would we look for in a store? I've only seen a couple of videos so far but I am hooked! Merry Christmas :)
@ShabbyFabrics
@ShabbyFabrics 8 лет назад
Sizing is similar to starch in that it will make them wrinkle free but we prefer it to starch because it doesn't get flakey or distort the fabrics +Darlene Frederick. You can find the brand we use at Walmart or Winco. Here is a link to the type we love: www.walmart.com/ip/Magic-Sizing-Starch-20-oz/11027205

I love this, thank you! I'm making it for an ornament exchange this week! Yay! I do have a question though, for the final step, the button, how do you get it to look indented? Mine just sitcks on and it looks more bulged outward. Do I sew it through to the rear of the ornament and just have a small amount of thread showing on the back? Or do I push the needle out towards the side of the ornament so it doesn't show? I'm thinking the side will make it wonky. Thanks!

You can have a button on both sides of your ornament so they pinch in the center. Or, you can simply have a button on the front and stitch all the way through to the back when attaching it in order to pinch the center. Either way, the center should get a nice indent :)

These are so beautiful! I'm making them for all the grandkids and I have one question; do you sew the button on or glue it? Thank you so much Jennifer for your wonderful tutorials! Blessings to you and yours this Christmas season 💞

We sewed our button on because it gives the ornament that "pillowed" look :) Thanks for watching and have fun creating your ornaments for the grandkids!

At the end, you said push the button in the center down to give it that indented look. Would it be O.K. to stitch by hand through the center a couple times and secure with a knot on opposite side of where button would be glued on to (front side for botton)? Or would you not suggest this? Love these ornaments BTW!

That is a great technique and would give that cute tufted look! You can absolutely do that :)

Awesome video do you have anymore hints on how to get the folds perfect? Really new at this any help would be appreciated.

We just use the methods in the video! You could also use a Clover Press Perfect Roll & Press to help get really nice folds without heat. We use that tool a lot in our Quilt as you Go tutorials. You can find that here: www.shabbyfabrics.com/clover-press-perfect-roll-and-press-P57789.aspx - Morgan

Jen, when you say right sides together in your video with the big square ,I think u meant to say wrong sides together based on what I see in the video. I am a visual learner and love your videos best of all. You have taught me so much, THANK YOU, MERRY CHRISTMAS

Wow, that''s a giant mistake. Now I have to undo four ornaments. You should edit that video to correct.

Just curious, as I am new to sewing. Why wouldn't you use the sewing machine to close it shut at the end, instead of a whip stitch? Thanks for the tutorial, it is awesome. Wait! YOU are AWESOME!
@lindadittrich151
@lindadittrich151 4 года назад
you can machine sew it closed with as narrow of a stitch as you can make. However, it's difficult because of the stuffing, and it's much prettier hand stitched closed. I hate hand stitching, so I'm guilty of machine stitching closings. Hope that helps
@ShabbyFabrics
@ShabbyFabrics 4 года назад
Linda explained that well! Sometimes, with the bulk of the project, it's just hard to close it with the machine. We usually prefer that method if it works, or we close it by hand if it doesn't work. Thank you for watching! - Morgan

This looks really awesome but I can't find the sizes for the squares anywhere. The only one I know is the 10 X 10 mentioned right at the start of the tutorial. Does anybody have the sizes for the other 2 squares?

That’s so fiddly on the machine. It’s less trouble and more fun just to sew it by hand!

I get in trouble with the pin in the ribbon . I broke needle. Should Take it out once I get it under the sewing machine? Newbie sewing

Yes, we recommend removing pins. Some people sew over them, but if you do hit it, your needle will break and that's not fun. We don't ever sew over our needles. - Morgan
