Recently I had the opportunity to work on a pair of custom hunting knives for an anniversary present. The set consists of a larger 4" Drop Point and a 3" Skinner. Both have a hamon on the blade as well as a desert ironwood burl handle. In this video, I explain my process of preparing the blade before heat treat, creating and revealing the hamon using satanite clay and polishing, and finally shaping the ironwood handles. If anyone has a question about anything, please let me know in the comments and I'll try my best to help!

We are a team of two brothers that creates handcrafted knives. From the initial designing and grinding of the steel blanks to the final sanding of the handle, each step of the process is done by hand, which makes every knife that comes out of our shop 100% unique. In all of our blades, we strive to combine the clean lines of modern design with excellent performance, so that your knife will do its job properly and look great in the process.

@@StarkKnives You bet. What kind of wood are the scales? Also what steel are they?

This is desert ironwood and the steel was W2.

@@StarkKnives Thanks very much...it's beautiful, is that considered burl ? I'm a new knife maker and I'm learning the hard way by trial and error. Also watching you tube videos and asking questions helps since I don't know anyone I can talk to. I'm going to be 75 next month and this is a fun and interesting hobby to keep me occupied. It's a lot more difficult than it looks watching you tubes though, especially grinding the bevels....lol Some of you experts make it look easy. Ive been shopping for Ironwood but most of the sellers on Amazon get poor reviews so i guess i need another source. How long have you been making knives?

What a beautiful knife, you have well mastered the free hand grinding on your bevels and plunge lines. Do you have any tips on how to master it. After heat treatment to what thickness you grind your edge. Keep up the good work.
@StarkKnives
@StarkKnives 3 года назад
Thank you! I definitely haven’t mastered it yet, but I’m working on it! I always recommend doing a lot of practice and when you feel like things are getting hard to control, switch to a fresh belt. I usually take the edges pretty thin. I don’t measure them, but it’s probably around .015” or so?

I noted the same. You do free hand grind but you actually don't even mark the blade before hand?!?!?! That is quite amazing mate!

Hello, I live in France, start the cutlery in hobby, and discover your chain. I congratulate you on your work. it is not easy for me to translate everything, and I use a translator. also, I would like to have more explanation on the salanite clay product that you put on your knife. the leash for the oven or do you dry it before? what product do you use for quenching? what is your gray mixture and its proportions? what is it for? thank you very much. and continues. bye
@StarkKnives
@StarkKnives 2 года назад
Hi and thank you for watching! I'm actually about to post a video that explains the clay process in a bit more detail. The satanite is mixed with water to form a thick paste that I apply to the blade and let dry overnight before putting the knife in the oven for heat treating. I quench in Parks 50 oil. The gray mixture you are probably referring to is abrasive powder that I mix with oil to polish the hamon. I will explain that in the next video as well! :)

I understand W2 is a water hardening steel so just curious why you use Parks 50?
@StarkKnives
@StarkKnives Год назад
It’s a fast quench but is less prone to warping and cracking than using water.

can you tell the total length of the knives with the handle and separately the length of the blade? thanks
@StarkKnives
@StarkKnives 2 года назад
I don’t have them with me anymore, but I believe the smaller one is around 3” blade and 4” handle and the larger one 4” blade and 4.25” handle.
