HEAT TREATING MY FIRST KNIFE!

Since I started making knives around 6-7 years ago, I have relied on sending my knives out to heat-treating companies for the hardening of the blades. However, recently I got an Evenheat kiln so that I can take the blade hardening process into my own hands! Being able to heat treat my knives myself is going to open up a lot of opportunities for cool projects in the future. I wanted to document the first knife I ever heat treated myself and share the result with you all! In this video, you can see how I heat treated an EDC Butcher and then finished it off with a really cool cholla cactus and teal resin handle. I also gave the blade an acid washed bevel and satin flats finish that I think ties the whole piece together. Let me know what you think!

We are a team of two brothers that creates handcrafted knives. From the initial designing and grinding of the steel blanks to the final sanding of the handle, each step of the process is done by hand, which makes every knife that comes out of our shop 100% unique. In all of our blades, we strive to combine the clean lines of modern design with excellent performance, so that your knife will do its job properly and look great in the process.

Hey you make a good human parts tumblers, we enjoyed your video came here looking at how to heat treat and we also like your HT oven from EvenHeat. Best of all e like the handle material really desert style, see we live in the Mojave Desert of California so that is why the handles well and their colors. Great final product. Thank you. Lance & Patrick.

Thanks for the video. Do you quench the blade between tempering cycles, or just let it cool down naturally? Thanks.
@StarkKnives
@StarkKnives Год назад
I often quench after the tempering cycles! I’ve seen that it doesn’t hurt and maybe helps and it saves time!

I dig it. Where do you get the oven temp and times? Is there a chart for different metals.
@StarkKnives
@StarkKnives 2 года назад
I usually just Google it and read some forums. The steel suppliers also usually have the heat treat recipes on the product pages. 😃

Great work! How do you preheat the quenching oil?
@StarkKnives
@StarkKnives 3 года назад
Thank you! I usually have a couple of bars of scrap steel that I heat up in the oven and then quench in the oil to heat it up.

Great videos. What are you using for porta band blades. You seem to be cutting a heck of a lot easier than I cut 1095.
@StarkKnives

Thanks! I usually use either Morse or Lennox bi-metal blades around 14-18 tpi.

great video- what about cryo?

Thanks! This type of steel doesn’t not benefit that greatly from a cryo treatment.

Thank you for the support! My family and I are soccer fans and we went to Istanbul last year and got t-shirts and jerseys from a few of the local soccer teams. Glad you noticed! 😃

How long does the KH (110v) model take to come up to temp? Debating on updating my electrical or just go with a KH series.
@StarkKnives
@StarkKnives 2 года назад
It depends on the temperature of the room the oven is. When it’s warm (70 degrees F +) it can get up to 1500 in under an hour. When it’s colder it takes a bit more. If you plan ahead and just turn the oven on it’s not a big deal. I’m fine with my 110v. :)

How long did it take them temperature to come down to 400?
@StarkKnives
@StarkKnives 3 года назад
Probably about an hour or so. I stuck some bricks inside and had a fan blowing fresh air in to help bring it down faster. A second oven would be nice but that isn’t happening right now haha!
