Learn how to make your own double extract medicinal mushroom tincture using a few bits of simple equipment at home.
We show you step-by-step how to make a dual extraction tincture using water and alcohol. The medicinal mushrooms used in this video include:

Thanks.i have 20 lbs of dried wild reishi from pacific NW. They grow amongst the huckleberries in August. A few different varieties grow out here.also I find agaricon rarely.

I have one question: I read somewhere that doing a triple extraction is the optimal way to go: according to this article, some compounds need to be extracted on cold water, some hot water and of course, some on alcohol. Hi :) ... I'm half way through making a Birch Polypore tincture. Im now ready to strain the mushrooms & to add to the water to simmer... Is 2 hours the correct time to leaving them simmering? & also is is OK to simmer them in a Stainless steel pan or best to not use metal at all & stick to Pyrex?? Many Thanks Héloïse

Would it be better to make the tincture with 95% alcohol rather than 40% because when you combine the decotion with the 40% it would dilute the alcohol too much. Could bring the 95% down to 40% with the decotion instead.

Does the order matter? Can you or have you tried doing it together? Why not boil the alcohol off? Using a coffee filter with a vacuum pump would filter it better?

Can it be filtered with coffee filters or it is better to be a liitle muddy? How long it last? Should keep in cold place? Refrigirator? How to use? How many drops per day?

Hello, thanks for the very straight forward Presentation. I was so blessed to find a giant reishi growing this fall, and I’ve had some of it soaking in 80 proof for two months now. I’m hesitant to use the alcohol soaked reishi for my water extraction, because I heard that the alcohol may break down the very components that are to be extracted by the water. What are your thoughts on this? Thank you

Hi Joshua, as far as I understand it (I'm not a herbalist so perhaps worth checking with one as well), most of the water soluable compounds will be remain intact and can still be extracted after soaking in alcohol.

Not sure if its coincidence, or if it's even possible, but I've been drinking chaga tea 2 times a day for about 1 month now,and it seems like I'm tolerating gluten better.i dont have celiac, just intolerance, but now ican have some bread ,amd dont feel bloated or really gassy! Simmering would evaporate off the alcohol which would defeat the alcohol extraction in the first place, using a distiller to remove water from the alcohol extraction and maybe simmering the water extraction to make it more concentrated then adding the two together maybe? Get what you are saying tho

My dual extraction was the consistency of gel the next day after combining the water and alcohol solutions? I did really reduce the water and birch poly pores. Is it okay? I soaked the birch poly pores in 100 proof vodka for two months before straining the mushroom for the water soluble reduction. I also blended some freshly dried poly pores and added them to the mushrooms I had soaked in the alcohol for the 2 months. I strained through cheese cloth after reducing water solution on the stove and then combined with the alcohol the mushrooms soaked in.

Medicinal mushrooms are rarely gourmet except Shiitake or Maitake and some others. So the main thing is getting the most benefit from the ingredience by extracting.

Please let me understand if it is better to simmer reishi slowly to maximim 70° Celsius or to 100°C...there are in my opinion some non clear and defined studies regarding if there is some compounds that could benefit or not from a higher temperature for the water extract...or if the lower temperature is not able to extract...im a bit confused...in Italy i have access to 190 proof alcohol 96 percent...but really do not know for how long to soak Reishi in it(reishi are from our oak woods and grown there naturally, the spieces is Ganoderma Lucidum)

I don't drink alcohol but would like to have the mushroom's beneficial properties exactred by the alcohol processing... So, my question is: Can I put the alcohol processed tinture to a low simmer so the alcohol would evaporate? And if so, would this "alcohol free" tinture be good for a couple of years or would it spoil quickly as a simple decoction would? Thank you! Ana

I can’t answer your question, but normally an alcohol tincture, you will only use a few drops to maybe 5ml, so it is quite insignificant. Leaving it in alcohol will keep it shelf stable, and avoid mold.

i have many tinctures made from plants and i take teaspoons at a time and the vodka is nasty! i either add very warm water to the amount i want to take in a small glass bowl and the vodka evaporates out in an hour or i just skip the water and let the dose sit in an open bowl overnight so the tincture lasts in the original bottle for almost ever.

asking advice here. I want to make a dual extraction, but wonder if I should combine 9 at once for the same tincture. I plan on grinding all, infusing into everclear, then after straining, I will proceed with the water extraction. I have Chaga, Turkey tail, Tremella, Red Lingshi, Red Reishi Dried Sliced Ganoderma Lucidum, Lions Mane, Shiitake, Maitake, Fangjia Cordyceps Militaris. I would assume I should add equal amounts of each?...BTW, I have learned quite a bit from your informative posts.

It definitely won't harm them, and would ensure you've got out all of the bioactive compounds - if you have the time then yes, we would recommend that!
