Do you put the alcohol mix in a jar or a flask and then in the ultrasonic bath? Or do you put the alcohol in the bath with the mushrooms in there directly?

My tip: instead of buying an expensive press. Buy a polyester filterbag. (for example from the magical butter machine). I have a 190 (that's a size) polyester filter bag. You can really get a lot of extra from it. I think you can even more than double it. And polyester doesn't get as dirty as cheese cloth.
Polyester contains petroleum and plastics, I'm just thinking the purpose behind doing tinctures is to get away from big pharma and take a more holistic approach to our health.

I can attest that the temperature on the water solution is not that important, mine was up to 85-90° at times, tried to keep it around 70°C, but the product works like a charm

Can I use Chinese BaiJiu (White Lightning) as my alcohol mix? It is definitely coming in over 40% alcohol. It's made from rice and has a very potent, fragrant smell, which is why I'm asking if it would be ok to use instead of vodka.
Could someone take the result of the combined alcohol and water extract jars and boil them down until it's a fine paste and then mix it in a tea? I'm looking for a method to consume one dried pound of cubes because the last time I tried, I just did a water extract and added tea and sweetener and it was the worst thing I've ever tasted, not to mention just how much liquid of the horrible taste there was to consume.

I have a question that was not covered: If the goal is to have a somewhat standardized dosage of your gourmet/medicinal mushroom of choice, what is the ideal ratio of powderized mushroom to alcohol and subsequent powderized mushroom to water? For example, say you have 100g dried mushroom powder, should you add 200g alcohol for the first step, and, say, 400g water for the 2nd step, aiming for half of that water to boil off for a final weight of 200g water? I realize this is more technical but with so much wiggle room you could easily end up with 12 tincture bottles versus 50 or more. Also, do you have a link to the sonic machine?
check how much he fills the mason jars, what of it is shroom and then how much water could be possibly fit in the rest. thats your amount. i think its not an exact science here.
I agree. I read something online which to be honest I believe is the same guy explaining the same sort of things. And he says it does not matter, not exact science, but about tictures the alcohol should cover the mushroom completely and maybe a 10-15% more. ?
I have another question for anyone who has the answer. So I will buy an ultrasonic cleaner but how do I use it? Do I put it in glass jar, fill with alcohol and then submerge into the bath with water in it? What settings would I use and for how long? Thank you in advance
The problem with using alcohol below 90 or 100% is that after you add part 2 (the hot water extract) your alcohol by volume is cut in half. And anything below I think 30% ABV will not be shelf stable and will allow bacterial growth
@@AnthonyJay I guess it depends how it was extracted. But yes that sounds odd to me. For example my cordyceps I'm sure is bright orange. My chaga is dark almost black
I know this is months late but to my knowledge psylocibin is not soluble in alcohol, however I have seen quite a few ppl suggesting using white vinegar
@@raymondmorales8774 up to you depends how potent you want, I wouldn't do more than 2 oz in a mason jar otherwise it will be difficult to shake it up as there would be too much organic matter weighing down in the jar
When using tinctures for baked goods, what would be the equivalent amount of tincture to use in place of mushroom powder? (I don’t have the $ to buy the potency testing tools, so hoping there is a rule of thumb)
Dried mushroom exteract powder is more concentrated generally but unfortunately loses potency through oxidation. Think of a full dropper as a dose, and add the desired amount of doses for your baked goods! Make sure to calculate the extra liquid to not mess up your recipe ;)

Is it possible to extract multiple mushrooms in one alcohol solution? Was planning on Reishi, Shiitake, Lions Mane and Turkey Tail double extraction….can I powder them and extract at once? Should be ok I guess? Love the video!!! Thanks for the tips!
I bet it would work. Did you try it? I bet anything similar in density would process the same. I wouldn't try it with chaga unless you soaked realy long.

Nice video! Would this work with mushrooms containing psilocybin as well?😊 to be clear, those are sold legally in my country and making a tincture sounds very interesting but I’m wondering if the compound will still work after extracting
Psilocybin dissolves very well in water, the alcohol would be preserving the extract. You could use that for microdosing but for higher doses you'd get too much alcohol, which I personally don't like besides it being not healthy. You can just make tea from the mushrooms and freeze that as cubes too.

@@DaivonM. Do you have the magic shrooms? Which kind? I grew lots of psilocybe cubescence aurumescence (=Golden Teacher) from growkits. I used to chew and swallow them but I switched to having them as tea. It starts working faster and stronger as tea and there is less or no nausea because you don't ingest the fibre. It's super easy. You need the dry shrooms. You take the usual amount. You might grind them slightly to a course state, not to powder. I use a dedicated electric coffee grinder, few seconds. Some people use a box weed grinder. You might even just cut or break them to half inch or 1 cm pieces. Then put them in a pot and add say one or two glasses of boiling water. Let it steep or simmer with a lid on for half an hour and stir it once or twice. Then strain it and drink it when it cooled down enough. You might add during the simmering some herbal tea like chammomile or some fresh ginger, perhaps some honey. This will mask the shroom taste so well that you don't even taste the shrooms and it's quite delicious. First time I got high after 5 mins and fell into a strong trip after 5 more minutes, when I ate them that would be only after a hour or so and there would be some slight nausea. It is possible to first steep the shrooms in the juice of like a quarter lemon fore 5 mins before you add the boiling water. That's called lemon teck and could help for the trip to start faster because some of the psilocybin would be converted to psilocin by the acid, which also happens in the stomach and the liver converts it as well, so you can try whether you prefer to do the lemon steeping first or not. Both psilocin and psilocybin are very soluble in water that's why making a tea works so well. It is being said even 15 mins steeping in hot water will be enough, or half an hour in even cold water. But I believe the heat from the water won't damage it. You can try and make a very strong tea and once cooled down freeze it in portions in litlle plastic boxes in the freezer for later use. However even just chewing the shrooms is great as well, so whatever you prefer. The dried shrooms stay strong for a year, then the strength slowly diminishes. After two years maybe 75% of the activity is gone, so you'd just have to use more. I think freezing a strong tea is the best form of preservation. You could instead add alcohol to make it 20% but you'd have to drink so much that the alcohol will effect you and personally I strongly feel alcohol and weed spoil the trip experience. Good luck!
@@DaivonM. Activate them by soaking in lemon juice for 20 minutes first then put your soaked ground mushrooms and lemon juice in with a tea and drink. Avoid the bits as they might give your stomach a reaction. Not always a bad thing but some people react more to chitin than others. Grind the mushrooms either in a coffee grinder or pestle and mortar but the mortar is a lot of work. Chitin is super tough to grind.
So I'm questioning how long to simmer it on the stove. From everyone I see says 3 hours. You say 12 hours. Why so long and do you keep filling the water the while time. How much watcher should you have left

So if i was using PE mushrooms... Would i be extracting the compounds i need from it? And how would i calculate how much is in lets say 10ml, with the dry goods being at 3% psylo
If the water is boiling off and you have to keep adding more, how does it extract anything? Wouldn't each new batch of water be essentially starting the process over? Or do I just have no idea how this works? Lol

Instead of commenting about water simmering/boiling below its boiling point. I'll just mention a Soxhlet extractor. With one extraction is repeated over and over creating a concentrate and its easy to tell when its done. Since the solvent will be clear once the thimble is full and the syphon tube is filled and creates a vacuum to drain the chamber. Then simply swap out the round bottom flask from one filled halfway with alcohol to one filled halfway with water. No messy filtering needed. Also if one is used and no filter thimble will be used just use cotton balls to make sure no particles make it into the syphon tube and clog it. Also blender to turn the product into a fine powder?
So soxhlet was the first thing I thought of too. It would cut extraction from 6 weeks to about 3 hours. The temp would be held to the boiling point of the alcohol. I found the best solution for clogs is to put the powder into filter paper or cloth and use twine to make a ball.
is it not "better" to shock-freeze them (for to use the shape of the water when it becomes ice) to break through the chitin and then to put them in alcohol, so you save time 1. and 2. eventual bacteria & fermentation ?

This video was very well done and very thorough compared to other videos I've seen going over extractions and tinctures. Question: Instead of using something like Vodka or Everclear to extract the fat soluble compounds could I use an oil (for ex: Blackseed oil)? I know this would be considered an oil infusion and not a tincture at this point but wondering whats more effective for extracting the fat soluble compounds in mushrooms, alcohol or oil?
Just today I found out from a top expert in the field that it depends on what mushroom you're extracting as far as the best method to use. For example I was surprised to find out that maitake and turkey tail are best extracted with hot water! Apparently they don't even need that alcohol part
