How to make a floral cross arrangement in yellow and white
Ingredients - spruce/pine , gypsophila spray roses , yellow standard roses, germini, solidago, trick dianthus, aspidistra, hosta, French ruskus and pittosporum
I could not find a premade base for this design, but it was relatively simple to make one using wood. We used foam as the base but you could substitute with moss for a foam free version.
To create impact the simple yellow and white colour scheme works well, and basing with gypsophila gives a softer effect than chrysanths.
The main spray in the centre needs to be bold also, so the large roses, germini and hosta work well to achieve that. We haven’t made a design like this before as a video but it’s good to see how such a design can be created.

I am constantly amazed and in awe at flower arrangements and I do want to learn how to create them myself as I have pedestal designs commissioned every 1-2 weeks as I have an antique sitting room and flowers give it a bit more depth and atmosphere almost.
@FlowerJoos

You should create a design - just try it. If you make a new design every two weeks you can try different flowers and different approaches, but the joy is as much in creating an arrangement as much as the design itself. 😀 just have a go!

I think this is appropriate for a church center piece as well, only smaller and of course centered. Our church is small and quant only one center arrangement needed. I think I’ll do it next time I have to do the monthly Sabbath. It will probably need to be on a stand high enough for a Koa calabash placed underneath for water drip-age. Mahalo 🤍😇

Thank you John. While I don't watch your videos to fall asleep to, your lovely accent is very calming and I enjoy that as you have transitioned to a "retired" state, you are more focused on the enjoyment of creating designs, almost letting us retire along with you. I wouldn't have thought of this cross as in my taste (yes I prefer something more natural--but I'd be dead eh? and probably wouldn't care too much about the flowers you'd prepare for my funeral😂), but it's really quite beautiful and I love the snowy gyp and spray roses on the blue spruce. Maybe a winter funeral?
@FlowerJoos
@FlowerJoos Год назад
Thank you Lynne - actually for a winter funeral this would be lovely with the snowy white base. I did enjoy creating this - funeral work in general is enjoyable and a privilege to create, and we should all enjoy the things we are creating - it does show in the work I think. I laugh when people comment on my voice - I’m just glad it’s soothing and not boring! Maybe people are too polite to say if they think it’s that 😂 Have a good week 🌼🌼🌼

Hi John! What an interesting video. As someone has said before me, I love to watch you work. It is very much a learning experience - no matter how much experience I may have. Standing (U.S.) funeral pieces are very much in vogue in certain parts of this country, and not so much in others. I've done my share of them, and find them enjoyable. Your design is perfect, really. While I balked at gypsophila at the outset, your use of it couldn't have worked out better. It gives a wonderful offset to the bold yellow spray. As always, I'm inspired, and so grateful for your talent and creativity! Hope you have a wonderful week!

AMAZING, as all your designs. I love cross arrangements, would it be appropriate to make it for regular church worship service , not only for funeral??? If not do you have any tutorial for huge altar arrangements please?
@FlowerJoos
@FlowerJoos 7 месяцев назад
Thank you - I suppose it depends where you are - in my area it would be seen as a funeral item - but maybe fixed on a wall or set in a display way then it becomes a floral cross not a funeral item? If it’s tied in to another occasion as well then it’s just a floral design that happens to be cross shaped. Altar arrangements - we do, have a little look in our past design videos - they are very similar to double ended sprays or mantlepiece designs as well. 🌼

Thank you 😊 for this I halved a block across - so it was just perfect for the width of the wood below, then chamfered the top edge. It worked well - and this was a big size version, so the block width was used - normally they are narrower

Beautiful work John. Whats your/everyone's everyone's opinion on artificial funeral tributes? I am getting a lot of enquiries about them, I much prefer fresh flowers obviously but there seems to be a high demand for them at the moment, especially where I am based
@FlowerJoos

Thank you 😊 I must say I much prefer fresh material - it’s always going to look nicer, but if a customer wants artificial then it’s worth exploring or doing. If you don’t you will lose a sale and they would go elsewhere. But I think cost wise fresh is better value and nicer 🌼

Great that you made the cross yourself...and repurposed wood. Whenever I make an arrangement, I try to make it approximately the same height it will be seen. For example, when I make a wreath, I have a nail on the wall at the height it will be hanging on a door. I noticed you made the cross flat on the table, looking down. (I'm assuming the cross is going on a stand?) Do you think it matters, or will it look good from any angle?
@FlowerJoos
@FlowerJoos Год назад
Thank you - it was actually really easy to make the base - I have limited diy skills! This design could go on a stand - here in Scotland stands are not used, so it would be seen from above, but I have to say on a stand is better - it can really be seen then. But it can work either way with this design 😀🙋🏼‍♂️

@@FlowerJoos Oh, ok. I live in Canada...we use stands. For something like what you made, or vertical sprays, hearts, etc., they go on stands on both sides of the casket. Where would you place a cross such as the one you made?

Hi John, love your videos. I’m in the US and I do a floral cross for Easter at church every year. It’s a big standing cross, so I zip tie a foam cage to it with foam inside the cage. I noticed that no water came out of your foam as you worked. I zip tie the cage first and put the flowers together on the cross, because it’s too unwieldy once the flowers are on the cage… so I’m doing the construction vertically. The first year I did my cross I had water EVERYWHERE! So the next year I rigged the foam by cutting a ziplock bag at about 1/3 of the foam height and putting the foam brick in the ziplock then into the cage. That worked OK. Do you have a recommendation of a better way? How wet is your foam? Seems the flowers need it wet but the vertical presentation needs it to be less so. How do you make it work?
@FlowerJoos
@FlowerJoos Год назад
Hi Amy, thank you for your comments. I prepped this base the day before so it had a chance to drip - and I think the wood would also soak up a little of the excess water, so setting up a base in advance stops a lot of water going everywhere. That works well for a funeral item - which is for one day really, then will sit outside. For your cross inside then I think you have found the perfect solution using the zip bag. You could also soak your foam and allow it to sit for a day - there will be plenty water in it. Foam also has a natural way to lie - if it’s soaked and lying flat with the writing on top, then it doesn’t drain - but turn it vertical and the water will run out. Try it with a block of wet foam next time. So, if you can position the foam to accommodate this you will find it won’t drip as much, and will retain the water better. And also last better! 😀🌼

Just a question I know a long time ago they used to wire a lot of things roses garbers how about yourself do you wire or leave natural
@FlowerJoos
@FlowerJoos Год назад
I tend to leave natural - wiring can help hold and support but it can damage stems - so for gerbera that can allow bacteria to get into the stem and cause collapse. Generally wiring isn’t needed now with the great flowers we now get - they are stronger, more consistent and better produced, so in a way they don’t need as much help 🌼😀

We are really hoping that the industry suppliers come up with a good commercial alternative. There are other options for constructing designs but nothing so versatile as floral foam which covers all designs - and that’s as big a problem moving away from the micro plastic problem. @@FlowerJoos Just wrap moss around sticks tied in the shape of a cross. Job done, there is nothing more versatile than imagination and basic skills.
