Great concept, Bob! One idea that comes to mind just watching you build is skipping the magnets. Chisel out the areas for the mending plates in the bottom of the seat as you did, but then add the mending plates to the top of the legs? That way when you setup the stool, the metal plates can fall into the chiseled out spaces? Not sure that would work, but could be worth a shot on another iteration? Thanks for sharing, Bob!
@I3urton
@I3urton 8 лет назад
Or he might combine your idea with the use of the magnets by embedding them in the chiseled out spaces in the seat plate. That way, the legs would lock into the gaps AND be secured by the magnets!
@theirspacenotmine
@theirspacenotmine 8 лет назад
I had a similar thought. What about leaving those two legs about 1/4" longer than the attached leg, then chiseling out two notches in the seat for them to fit into? Pretty much like your idea, less the additional hardware.

Just a quick tip regarding the magnets: When you try to make them hold to the same piece of metal: Alternate their popularity. While that decreases the range they have, it increases the field density in their close neighborhood, strengthening their bond to the metal band in your shop stool.

This would be great for stage sound and lighting people needing a tall stool but yet packs well in the truck . Great idea

Nice design Bob. One suggestion is to cut a relief on the bottom of the legs so only the outer 1" or so actually touches the ground. It would be more stable especially if it gets used on a rough surface (i.e. gravel, grass, etc).
@Zxios
@Zxios 8 лет назад
Hey Bob, you could always take a couple of hard drives, rip them open with a T6 or 8 bit and take out the neodymium magnets. They're super strong and hold extremely well. You can expect at least 1 in a drive but if you're lucky you'll find 2 or 3 even.
@GCF1218
@GCF1218 8 лет назад
Another idea for the two legs to fall into place at the exact angle is to have the tops slightly different sizes. The one that travels the furthest could be slightly shorter across the top. Then there could be a stop block at both of those angles so when you pull them out, the second leg catches first, then the third leg catches last.

Great once again Bob. A suggestion for helping lock in the two moving legs is maybe have them slightly longer and then recess the metal plates, this then would give a positive slot the legs would lock into.
@Iliketomakestuff
@Iliketomakestuff 8 лет назад
Oh yeah, that's a good idea. They' be a lot more stable that way. Possibly a little harder to align when setting up, but it'd probably be worth it.

You could add a key where the third leg sits under the seat. It could be a dowel going vertical or horizontal depending on which way will be getting more stress. A key will ensure it doesn't fold under your weight or while moving it around.
@rolabears

Live earth magnets, such as the ones found in an old hard drive, may have the strength to lock the legs in place more securely than regular magnets. I use them as stud finders in drywall.
@mountainmanwoodworks
@mountainmanwoodworks 8 лет назад
Bob, you could make it lighter by skeletonizing the legs. Also, you could use a peg in the top of the leg and a hole in the bottom of the seat, to Aline and keep the legs in place.

Really cool simple idea. Nothing like thinking something up and turning into reality in just a couple hours. Best part of making stuff.
@JacobEdmond
@JacobEdmond 8 лет назад
Another idea would be to mortise the two magnetic legs into the seat and then embed the magnet as well. That way the magnet hold the seat down, but the mortises align them and add a lot of strength.
@tfwoodcraft

Love this. Gonna make one of these out of my scraps when I get off work. I don't have magnets laying around so I think I'll just screw in a stopper on the outside of the last leg when expanded so they cant over expand. Maybe put a little latch of some sort on the stopper and leg to keep it from closing involuntarily. Thanks for the idea!
@aquasax1
@aquasax1 8 лет назад
Nice stool! I'd consider angling the bottom of legs so only the far outside portion touches the ground - that way the stool is always on secure ground. Three distinct points touching earth, rather than the entire board.
@Iliketomakestuff

Definitely, someone else suggested and it's a fantastic idea! It would help make this useable on uneven ground, like for camping.

If you cut the bottom of the legs a little bit diagonally (Outer edge longer than the inner/hinged edge) it will be stable even if you use it on an uneven surface, or if there are wood chips etc on the floor. (There's a reason milkmaids in the old days used three legged stools). Should be an easy fix.

Hey Bob, great video. If you wanted to improve the stick of your magnets drill a deeper bore and use a stack of 3 or 4 magnets, seen it done on a few robotic devices. Means you could keep with only 3 contact points and you only need to do this on one side if the metal plates you use are steel.

Great ad-hoc build. Love the free flowing style and not worrying about a taper jig, but just going for it with a circ saw. My engineering mind always wants things to be exact down to the 32nd...good reminder that sometimes I just need to be creative and let things flow.

a few thoughts on making one of these if you cut a 1/4 circle out of the center corner at bottom of the legs you could improve stability by making it more of a tripod. another thing I would add would be something like chair pads at the bottom of the feet to prevent chipping the wood and reducing the overall wear and tear.

Idea: If the top is 2 layers, the lower layer could have 2 grooves and the 2 folding legs could be a litter higher than the one with the hinge, so when open the higher legs fit in those grooves. Is this something? maybe! :D Great work!

Used a similar chair. The legs are longer to the outside the inside is curved up this is more stable and the 2 moving legs had a knub on top that went into a hole in the bottom of the seat chair. So when you sit on it you lock it in place. It was shorter as I sat lower when using it. Cool idea though on the build, never feel bad if your idea has been used before it just shows how intelligent you are!!

When I first saw you chiseling out those slots for the mending plates, I figured you were making indentations for the legs to slot into. I think that would be sufficient to prevent the legs from folding closed while the top was down.

My initial thought was that they might not work great on uneven ground, but in another comment someone mentioned cutting out a quarter circle from the inside bottom of the legs, so they were more of a foot. That would help a ton on uneven ground, if you take them camping!

Nice design! For the rare earth magnets, the magnetism is stronger when they are seated in a metal cup. I don't remember off hand why, but I've used some and it definitely makes them much stronger. I have no affiliation other than being a customer, but leevalley sells them as a set for most, if not all, of their magnet sizes. Thanks for the video!

Very cool design! Kind of reminds me of "campaign" furniture design. I saw that someone else suggested the steel magnet cups from Lee Valley, and I'd second that. I used them on a flip-down drawer front for my slide out computer keyboard drawer, and they're awesome. The only design suggestion I'd throw out there for the stool is to take a quarter circle out of the bottom inside of each leg to make the bottom profile more like 3 smaller feet rather than one big, flat one. Thanks for creating and sharing! JB

Say Bob, if only one leg is attached to the base with the hinges, how about making the other legs a few thou longer at the top, like if it were mortise an tennon, make the recieving box under the base lock them? The place that you marked for those metal plates that you made them flush with the chisel, instead of the metal plates the wood itself. Tnx for sharing it bro!!

The other advantage you could incorporate if you went with magnets on both the seat and the top of the legs is make it such that the first leg can't catch on the first set of magnets by either offsetting them (differing radius from center) or by reversing the polarity so they don't grab as you fold the first leg past the second leg's spot..
