How to Make a Hole-in-One Golf Ball Trophy Paperweight Cube from Epoxy Resin | DIY | Tutorial

Turn a golf ball into a trophy paperweight using a few simple materials and a silicone cube mould. This is the largest of the standard cube moulds (measuring 65mm square) and holds a LOT of resin - about 265g plus the golf ball.
Depending on your brand of resin you should expect to fill this mould in several layers to avoid an uncontrolled exothermic reaction, which may cause your resin to overheat and boil.

@@resinAce my husband has attempted a similar golf ball resin project years ago. The golf ball appeared to have expanded from the heat during the curing process then when it cooled it separated from the resin creating a void making it look like it had a giant air bubble around the whole ball. It wasn't though they took great care to get all the air bubbles out of it. Question being what happened and how do you prevent it? Thank you for any input.
@resinAce
@resinAce 5 лет назад
@@katemcclure6959 Did he use epoxy resin or polyester resin, because it sounds to me like he might have used polyester resin, which shrinks as it cures and can pull away from the surface of shiny objects like a golf ball. This creates a mirrored effect, which would look like an air bubble surrounding the object. If he can't remember, ask him if it was flammable and smelt really bad, if it did then it was polyester. If he did use epoxy resin, he needs to control the exothermic reaction to prevent it getting too hot. This basically involves pouring smaller amounts of resin in layers, and waiting for each layer to firm up before pouring the next. Some epoxy resins are better suited to deeper pours than others. Check the datasheet and it should give you a maximum pour depth for that resin type.

I collect the lucite/resin paperweights made by William Rolfe. They have natural materials assembled as scenes from the woods with rocks, lichen, mushrooms, insects, flowers, etc. He sold them in the United Nations gift shop in the 1960s. I’ve always wanted to make my own with Minnesota materials. Your video was very simple and easy to follow with minimal materials. Thank you. 🥰🇺🇦🌻

You are so amazing! Do you ever have mishaps? And why not dome while its in the mold-- wouldn't that be better so any errant resin will not slide down the side? I am afraid i'd put too much and it would run down and ruin everything. LOVE the comment about making sure there are no ladybugs in the grass, and then you put a little bug in there anyways. So sweet!! I love you, ResinAce!! I'm watching one of your videos per night. :-)
@resinAce
@resinAce 5 лет назад
Hi, thanks for the great comment. Yes, I have mishaps, I once posted a fail video here: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-dfLqul6AmOE.html but then unlisted it because it performed badly 😢 If you dome in the mould, the static in the silicone can attract the resin and cause it to breach the edge. As long as you don't exceed 2mm deep the resin shouldn't overflow. I hope you enjoy the rest of my videos 😎♠

When you do multiple layers like this, do you cover it while curing? I've had dust and bugs getting in there for a look, but I haven't found an effective way to cover without too much heat building up.
@resinAce
@resinAce 5 лет назад
Hi, I only cover loosely so the heat can still escape. I do get the occasional fleck of dust or glitter in there sometimes 🤔 I guess all you can do is use a bigger cover, like a cardboard box or something. 😎♠

@pamelarodan3470 5 лет назад
Very nice project. However I just have to say this is the first time I have seen you miss air bubbles as well as not push your dome layer all the way to the edges. So that leads me to ask if after the dome has fully cured is it possible to go back and add a touch more if you missed a spot in the dome without it looking like a patch?
@resinAce
@resinAce 5 лет назад
Hi, thanks for watching 😎 I filmed this video in a very short space of time, so with 5 individual resin pours I had to speed up the curing in an oven. Whenever you mix resin without vacuum degassing there will always be tiny bubbles, which are barely visible to the naked eye. When you pour the resin into a silicone mould, the static attracts those bubbles to the mould, which is why they're always at the edge. When you put the resin in an oven, the heat expands the bubbles to make them appear larger, which is a negative side-effect of the process. The dome layer did go to the edge, but the edge was a little uneven in places, which is probably what you're noticing. I think the moral of this story is 'don't rush your work' 😎♠️

Hello, this is amazing! I am wanting to try my best to make this! I am still new to using resin. I wanted to ask, in your text below your video you had mentioned that we should fill the mould in several layers to avoid an uncontrolled exothermic reaction where it would cause to overheat/boil. Is this including the room temperature? Also how do you cure the mould? Do you put it through a UV cured light? And also how long do you need to cure the mould before putting another layer on. Please help out. Sorry if these questions are silly >.
@resinAce
@resinAce 5 лет назад
Hi, thanks for watching. Every brand of epoxy resin is different, so you need to read the specifications for your own resin to know how much you can safely pour in one go. My resin is better suited to shallow pours, which take a few hours to gel at room temperature before doing another pour on top. The finished cube is left to cure for 24 hours before unmoulding. UV light is not required for standard epoxy resin to cure.

Epoxy resin can be quite costly, depending where you are in the world. Here in the UK I pay £25 per Kg for mine, which will only be enough for about 4 projects of this size, but will do a lot of smaller ones. A resin pendant, for example, may only use 15-20g.
