How to Make a Low Cost Lightboard for Online Teaching

A lightboard is a transparent dry erase board that allows the instructor to face the camera while lecturing. I've been teaching online during the pandemic and made a low cost lightboard out of acrylic glass and other low cost or on-hand materials. It’s possible to bring an in-person feeling and sense of community to remote learning. Watch as I give an introduction on how to make a low cost lightboard, which could be made from repurposed acrylic glass.

I've now used this board to teach online full time for a year. I'm going to be making a follow up video within the next month or so to talk about how it's holding up, dry erase marker consumption, and a camera focus "trick" to make the board look better. Are there any questions for my next video?

That sounds great, love this video especially the purposeful outtakes. Maybe expand on them and go over what it would be like if I had a room with white walls/without the black cloth, or If you only had one light how would it look or how would ring lights work? Thanks!

I like your video! I have a similar setup, and I've been experimenting with new markers. I got the same brand as you do, but while your colors appear bright and vivid, in my case they all show up mostly white with a very faint hue. Did you do anything special with the parameters to get the colors to pop so vividly?
@ChemistryinaNutshell
@ChemistryinaNutshell 2 года назад
@Dr. Frank's Lab Bench I adjusted the aperture on the camera until the background looked like a true black. The marker colors popped when I did that.

Love the Detailed and well thought out Video. You’re could add one more piece of tech that pulls it all together, Stream Deck (about 200$ ). It's a push button controller that can switch between each of your OBS scenes. Stream Deck is USB piece of hardware that has several physical buttons that can control and set your OBS Scenes. If you keep the Stream Deck near to you (Depending on the length of the USB cable) you can control your broadcast without going to the Laptop where the OBS software is running. Stream Deck buttons can also do a lot of other things including advancing/reversing your PowerPoint slides. Love your Tutorial Well done!

Thanks for the great info and tips. I cannot find the scratch you mentioned, but looking closely can see that flaws in the acrylic act like lenses. For the bright bubbles, there may be an easy fix. A black marker dot the size of the bubble on the camera side should eclipse it. It would be seen as a tiny black dot in front of writing or your face, but probably less visible than the bright white dots on a broad dark background. The bubbles are less obvious when you add content, and I suspect black dots would behave the same. Great vids!

So helpful, thank you so much! I would be most grateful if you could answer a few of quick questions please? 1. What are the approximate costs are of each components to build the lightboard and 2. What thickness the glass needs to be 3. Will glass be better than acrylic glaze Thanks so much!
@ChemistryinaNutshell
@ChemistryinaNutshell Год назад
Hi, Sam. 1) I have a lot of the supplies listed as Amazon links in the description of the video. Cameras and microphones vary in price widely. As far as the rest of the setup goes, the acrylic board was the most expensive at about $70 (USD) from a local hardware store. LED strip lights were about $10, a 5 pack of markers were $9, and the black backdrop was $20. In later videos, I use much brighter lights and it really improved the appearance of the videos. Those lights were about $200. The wood and screws for the frame were things I already had on hand. 2) My acrylic glass is 0.1 in (2.54 mm). It flexes due to how thin it is. It annoyed me at first, but I got used to it. If that is something that would annoy you, I recommend getting something thicker. 3) The high end lightboards do use glass instead of acrylic glass. I don't personally have experience with an actual glass lightboard. This website describes the process of making a high end lightboard: www.lightboard.info/construction

Question... if you wanted to make a board that would be hung on a wall and just used for memo's etc, could you paint the back of the board in a flat black? Would it still funtion properly or would the black interfere with the neon markers showing up properly?
@ChemistryinaNutshell
@ChemistryinaNutshell 2 года назад
I think it would work, but I haven't tried. I can think of 2 things that would be potential issues: 1) Absolutely do not get paint on the edges of the board. You need the edges clear for the light to penetrate. 2) You might have problems with glare. I have to keep the room dark on the camera side of my board to avoid glare. All of the light in my room is on the same side of the board as me.
@BeastMortThe

It would depend how large the holes are and how many of them there are. Light would not travel across a screw hole or something of that nature. Each screw hole would mean a little less light is there to illuminate the board.

@ChemistryinaNutshell
@ChemistryinaNutshell 2 года назад
There is one scratch that I put on my board. I'll tell you where it is so you can try to find it and see how bad you think it is: If I'm standing on the left side of my board in my default talking position, it's directly over my face / eyes. It's probably half a meter in length and horizontal. It might show up better in a newer video after I bought brighter lights, like this one: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-_gAj69KFgu8.html I was teaching a live class and dropped my microfiber cloth on the floor. I always feel rushed for time in a live class and used the cloth without checking it over. It had picked up a piece of sawdust that scratched my board. I noticed it immediately and was mad at myself. I see it constantly in-person, but it's hard to find in the videos, even when I know exactly where to look. It was also totally avoidable.

@@ChemistryinaNutshell I couldn’t find any scratch! Thank you for taking your time to write such a comprehensive answer. I have another question! @ChemistryinaNutshell
@ChemistryinaNutshell 8 месяцев назад
@marakaya It's nothing special. It's just cheap acrylic glass from a local hardware store. Have you tried using soft microfiber that's never been used for another purpose. I once dropped my cloth on the floor and some miniscule piece of dust ended up scratching the board.

Which camera are you using… what the setup???
@ChemistryinaNutshell
@ChemistryinaNutshell Год назад
In my older videos I'm using a Canon 400D as the main camera. As far as the set-up goes, I spent a very long time using trial and error to get all of the settings just right. It was very dependent of lighting and everything else. You'd likely have to replicate the process and not just copy the settings.

How do you ignore a glass reflection on a glass ?
@ChemistryinaNutshell
@ChemistryinaNutshell 2 года назад
The lights that illuminate me are on the sides, so I don't see much of a reflection. If I were to put a light directly above me it would be more of an annoyance.
