Over the past year I've gained a lot of experience using my lightboard. I'm sharing that experience with you. This is an entertaining and random assortment of things I've learned about the lightboard.

In 2020, I found you channel and lightboards intrigued me. I then went to the ministry of education here and pitched about this revolutionary device ;)... they were amazed with it and they gave me a sweet contract to record the entire state's K-12 video lessons in this format. If you watch my first few videos, there's an annoying, high-pitched buzzing in the background. I use Audacity's "noise reduction" feature to edit it out of more recent videos. Just know that it only sounds decent after that. Dear Teacher, thank you for teaching how to set up and use a lightboard. Just a few questions, if you don't mind answering: > What size would you recommend for the board? I'm considering something like 120cm x 90cm (~45" x ~36"). > What should be the minimal thickness to ensure rigidity? Alternatively, how think is the acrylic panel you use? > How did you fix the LED strip around the board? E.g., duct tape or something else? Thank you very much! All the best!

Thanks for your questions! (1) 120cm x 90cm should be fine. It's the larger ones that have trouble because light might not make it all the way to the center. (2) Mine is 0.1" (0.254 cm). It works but it wobbles a lot. I would probably have gone thicker if I had known in advance. (3) Masking tape worked for me.

Thank you for the useful hints, especially about the polarizing filter. Amazing that you used so many of those dry erase markers. Maybe you could delve into your chemistry knowledge and find an ink that would do the same thing and market it. I've been making ink out of walnut husks and rusty nails, but I find that it fades after a day or two. Then again, I am not a chemistry boffin. I've got an old glass table that I plan to try to turn into a diy lightboard like yours.

Let me add that from my point of view, the picture is better the more light you use. In your before and after comparison shot, I see no problem with glare or reflection, and your "normal" shots seem too dark and most of you is not visible.

Thanks for your kind comments and please let me know how your board turns out. I did end up buying brighter lights to illuminate me from the sides. They were used for the first time in my Newman Projection videos (ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-O-nPrfY7WmY.html ), but I'm still trying to figure out the best positions for them. I'm learning as I go.

Tape is not recommended to stick styrofoam board to anything. Use thick and strong double sided tape. It won't come loose. Trust me on this.

Thanks. I did eventually get it to stick, but ultimately bought brighter lights to illuminate myself because reflecting more light on me just wasn't enough.

thank you. great insights. i wonder, how did your style of teaching change when using the lightboard, what tends to be drawn, what gets overlayed from powepoint, what stays on your audio explanation?

When I teach in-person, I use the chalkboard a lot, so my teaching style didn't change significantly. I typically draw molecular structures and write out chemical reactions so that students can see every detail. The PowerPoints usually show (1) prepared example problems to give students something to work on when I need a minute to erase my board and (2) figures and tables from the textbook that would be impractical to write out.

Thank you! My board is 3 ft x 6 ft x 0.1 in (91 cm x 183 cm x 2.54 mm). This is different than the aspect ratio of my camera, so I can only use about 3 ft x 5 ft of it.

I love both of your videos! Thank you for making them! I am trying to make my own light board and built a wooden frame similar to yours just smaller and I have a question. How do you keep your plexiglass from moving when you write on it?

No problem! I'm glad they're helpful. I don't have the best answer to your question because my Plexiglas flexes when I write on it, too. It was annoying at first, but I got used to it and don't notice it anymore. Attaching it to the wooden frame in more locations helped.

I enjoyed your video. Thank you for sharing.... I do wonder about the expo neon dry erase markers. As you write with them they are releasing a fume into the air which you are breathing into your body. And the body then has to deal with the chemicals and hopefully biotransform and excretes.. I wonder in what way that could be a detriment to your heath over the long term.

Great question. I don't notice any smell and there's a lot less dust than normal / non-neon dry erase markers, but the chemist in my knows better than to rely on my senses! Let me introduce you to Safety Data Sheets, formerly called Material Safety Data Sheets. They're documents that contain information about potential hazards: sds.staples.com/msds/1910450.pdf

My acrylic glass is 91cm x 137cm x 0.25cm (36in x 54in x 0.1in). If I had to start all over again I would have started with something thicker because it flexes when I write on it, but it works.

Hi. I’ve created my lightboard, did one test, cleaned it and now it’s just smeared white and impossible to use. I’ve tried everything to clean it but it’s just white and smeared. I’ve used window cleaner, fairy, water, I don’t know what to do. Any ideas?

Hi, Sam. I'm sorry to hear that this is happening. First off, if you try anything else, I highly recommend trying on an out-of-the-way corner or edge. I'd like to help if I can. What material is your board? (Acrylic, glass, etc?) What markers are you using specifically?

Another thought crossed my mind regarding the Fairy dish soap: At a school where I used to teach a well-meaning person once washed the (white) dry erase board very well wish dish soap. It looked spectacular. At the start of class everything seamed normal. I filled up the board with text and went to erase and it just smeared everywhere. It would not erase. The fix for that day involved using loads of water to get every molecule of dish soap off of the board. If I got worse after dish soap, the fix likely involves water, window cleaners, and lots of towels to keep scrubbing.

1. Written text not visible. I used florocent marker to write on board. 2. Back drop also visible brightly which spoils complete purpose of it

1) You want to make sure that you're using either acrylic glass or normal glass. If your board is polycarbonate, it will look a lot like acrylic, but have different optical properties and the text will always be dark. 2) You might need to play around with the lighting brightness and angles a bit. The lights that illuminate me are pointed directly at me and not hitting the backdrop. I also have the camera exposure set so that the backdrop looks dark. Let me know if that helps!
