How To Make A Perfect Pheasant Tail nymph (Corona COVID-19 Edition)

@@Oholisfliesandfishing Yeah I had to sell some for a while - it paid for a New Zealand air ticket when I was between jobs some years back. Where are you based? Davie is truly great I learned most of my stuff from him. Your communication is an outstanding talent though and makes these vids a real resource, especially for some of the skinny modern flies. I don't compete, have been asked to try out - It just doesn't sit right with me - that is not a criticism of anyone else's game. Don't do competitions and don't do guides (least not until I get old) - it's an ethical and aesthetic thing for me.

@@paramidge8935 I live near Guangzhou now, but i am from serbia. You should consider competing not for the sake of competition which u dont like.... But for the knowledge. I have learnt so much during competitions. Its competing against yourself mostly. You get a stretch and you need to fish it. No excuses.... Thats what u get. You will be surprised where one can pull out some fish from. Plus, friendships can be really nice. I had a very good friend in Mongolia, i went fishing with him. 😃😃

Thanks 😀. Well, if i tie in PT first they would be in my way all the time. Thats why i tie wire first, but i try to make solid smooth underbody before i attach PT so 2 wraps would be enough to hold it before i wrap it around the shank.

I love anything that makes fly more durable. Wire, cross wrapped, CA glue, head cement... As long as it serves the purpose. But i also omit the head cement part when i make PTs.... For grayling its not important at all... For trout can make a huge improvement in durability

Since you are comparing strengths of tails, i will assume you are talking about coq de leon and pheasant gil. If that's the case dont need to worry .. Any tail os good. Cdl is more durable. But, that said... Fish dont care if your frenchie is with or without tail.... Keep coq de leon for tails on dries. For nymphs, plain indian rooster feather is perfect... Although, i use same pheasant as i am tying the rest of the body Hope this helps Cheers Vladimir

Thank you for that answer - it definitely helps put my mind at ease lol I prefer to build my PT's like you do, using the same pieces of fiber for the tail and body but I am new to tying flies so I am still learning about how to make flies last! @@jeremydulac5920 as far as for durability, pheasant tail as a material isnt among most durable ones... So, fish it and when only hook is left change it for a new one 😀😀. Some flies are easy to make but dont last much.... Sometimes, PT can last couple of dozens of fish.... Cheers and tight lines Vladimir

Thanks so much for your kind words. I love the contrast it gives. I cant say it makes it any more effective. So its just looks. But truth to be told, i havent tied any loke this since i made this video.. There are so many flies to tie 😂😂 As for the tail... I dont mind fish chopping off the tail. Sometimes when day is good i would have 50+ fish on just one fly. After that, i can only send it to retirement 😂😂

@@Oholisfliesandfishing The question that keeps coming up: do we tie flies to please ourselves or the fish. I'm torn between the two. When I'm unhappy with the fly I tied, I toss them. But I know that even the one I threw away would catch fish. One of my most effective, minimalist flies in Montana is this one: Fly Tying Plastique Frenchie | Hackles & Wings ( ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE--rEj6P-Q974.html ) I replaced the bead with copper colored tungsten and the wire with small UTC gold ( for contrast ). There's little taper to the fly, but I can tell you that it's been very productive for me.

@@schmoonkie i am not torn at all... I tie for myself... I love tying. Just as an example. Once i was fishing super pressured water with trout that had been stocked several months earlier. Fish became selective so much that many people would blank there... So i took pheasant tail nymph, piece of fluorescent green yarn i used for indicators... With overhand knot i tied yarn around my nymph... Fish went crazy about it... Since i prefer eild fish i never had same issue.... But they were never as picky... Simple PT nymph... If it has correct size and weight will catch fish most of the time... I am confident i can catch fish anywhere in the world with that approach Ps:that frenchie is a catcher for sure 👍👍👍

@@Oholisfliesandfishing Indeed, adapting to changing conditions quickly is key to success. Interesting story about the fluorescent green yarn. I have one for you. I was fishing with a friend on the Eagle River in Colorado. Both of us were using the same fly: Avatar emerger in mint bicolor ( mint green body with a near black thorax and tiny white wing ). I used a size 24, he used a size 26. The fish mostly went for his fly. I'm not sure if PH would have worked since we didn't try it. But the fish were very keen on the size and the color combination I mentioned.

@@schmoonkie probably the size... When fishing that small, i usually omit any details. Just make few simple flies in few colours.... Dark, usually black, cream and brownish.... Thats all.... I guess i need green as well. But now i dont need those tiny stuff... Wish i had some good fish around that would eat tiny flies...

Thank you for those words. As for rotation, first i am too used to do it this way, plus i am lazy to change sometimes. But to be honest every now and then i do it when i tie... Usually i make a mistake while using it... It needs time to get used to it.... But i agree... Its useful feature which i should use. 😀😀 Thanks for mentioning it.... Vlad, I tied for thirty years on a Thompson and then an HMH. I’m right with you; I had to unlearn a lot and force myself into some reprogramming. I decided to make myself do that work in order to speed up my tying and make it more precise. For what it’s worth, I found the book by Al and Gretchen Beatty pretty tough and inefficient to get through, but I learned a few things. Most of what I learned came from RU-vid, including from Norvise videos-and then taking a minute to think about new patterns. I now use it a lot-even for winding parachute hackles and other elements that require repositioning-because it gives me greater and more uniform control. A tier of your skills and first principles thinking could take it much further than I, no doubt. All the best, and thanks so much for your videos and the recommendation for “The Feather Mechanic”. That book arrived today!

Very possible i did... 😀😀😀 Today i tested my emerger on snakeheads, small ones... But emerger lasted and endured their teeth. (last video-foam emerger) so this one will be tied in several sizes now.
