How to make a Picture Frame from Scratch - American Frame 

Thank you, this is just what I need to make my own frame for a print I got for cheap. I went to Michael's with a 50% off coupon, expecting to be able to get a relatively inexpensive frame for my oddly sized print, but even with the discount, the price was outrageous! These instructions will save me a bundle, and I'll be able to get exactly the frame I want!

Like the equation - makes it foolproof! One thing I've always done is to cut biscuit slots in each side of the miter to align the miters and additional glue strength. I also cut and glue keys in each of the 4 corners vs nails and putty which always falls out over time!

Found exactly the information I was looking for. I had not though of using finishing nails rather than V Nails. I am making a delicate frame and was afraid the v nails would crush it. I like the alternative as well as the explanation of the math.

You did good by providing the formula but the key to miters (cutting the 45 is the easy part) is that the opposite sides need to be exactly the same size. A stop block should have been used.

The problem with gluing free-floating sides is that they can be misaligned from being flat. I prefer laying the whole frame flat on the work table, and using clamps that allow the frame to lie flat, like spring C-clamps.

Just in case people are still looking for the railing. Search (Pre-grooved chair railing) lowes, Homedepot, Manards) carry them but sometimes their railing is special order.

Too much overthinking. I measure from the inside wall of the Rabbet. I add the 1/8th inch play, and am not concerned about the Miter cut, only that I have enough stock. Make a template from a piece of wood, and use a knife to mark (neater/sharper) Be aware of the Kerf of the saw blade (the material removed by the blade). Make a Sacrificial Fence, consisting of an L shaped plywood section, that rests short end against the fence of the Miter Saw. Use clamps to secure (important). Now make cuts on both sides of 45 degrees. Use the cut fence marks to align future miters. Cut your stock After you paint it, and make sure to buy a blade that has the most teeth. You will thank me later.

This worked great, I have never made a frame and I know they can be tricky. I found an app for the fraction math no biggie. Question could you do a follow up on this showing the actual rabbit cuts and any other details that I can't think of. I want to do this for home stuff and I want to make sure I got it right. Great video and technique anyways.

Well, the important size for me is the inside dimensions, is there a formula to calculate the rnside dimensions first?

Something seems to be missing. Chair rail doesn't have the recessed notch cut out along the edge that is so important for the frame. Did you run these down a table saw first?
