Stardust Mine Jewellery - I love your videos! I’ve been silversmithing for a little over a year now, still learning techniques and how to use different materials, I’m self taught so it’s all trial and error, haha. Lately I’ve been trying to use this bezel style, but it’s sooo difficult to set! Even using a hammer it almost doesn’t budge, so I’ve been sticking with gallery wire. Do you have any tips on how to make this type of bezel easier to set?

Hi beautiful! Lately I'm struggling with getting enough money to invest on silversmithing or geting the time to practice... while time passes. Then, I see all the silversmithers and jewelry stores and think: this is impossible for me. Impressive! I've been struggling with calculating a proper wire lenght for the ring as the final dimension is several mm shorter than needed when I use formula for calculating the circumference of the circle. I guess that thickness of the wire plays a role in it. Is there any trick ho to calculate it properly?
@mar13tina
@mar13tina 4 года назад
Hi, I hope this reply doesn't come too late. What you're looking for is the neutral fibre/neutral axis. Example: you want to set a round stone with a 5mm diameter. The wire you want to wrap around is 1mm thick. So the wire circle will have an inner diameter of 5mm and an outer diameter of 7mm. What you need for your wire length is the middle of this diameter, in this case 6mm multiplied by pi (~3.14). The official formula is [inner diameter] + [wire thickness] × π or [outer diameter] - [wire thickness] × π. If you have an oval shape, you convert it into a circle first in order to apply this formula. So if you have a stone that is 6mm wide and 8mm long, it would be a 7mm circle.

@TheArtOfMetalsmithing
@TheArtOfMetalsmithing 4 года назад
I actually experimented with the solder paste! My thoughts are - it's excellent for small details, but not for shanks and larger pieces, for that regular solder and flux is the best 😀 So currently I will solder the shank using chips of solder and I use sweat soldering technique when the shank is large and wide

Hi I love how you demonstrate everything but how did you measure the bezel?
@Ken_Dalton
@Ken_Dalton 4 года назад
By hand, simply holding it tight to the stone will get u where u need to be. At first I started to measure but theres really no need, the more u do it this way u will get used to it, just cut it on the thin side rather than larger, bcoz u can always stretch up a fine silver bezel pretty easily if it's slightly too tight rather than being too loose.. I hope this helps u out 😊
@ManypossibilitiesGaoLY
@ManypossibilitiesGaoLY 4 года назад
@@Ken_Dalton thanks so much for replying. I also think the metal would have to be soft enough to hold tight and wrap around and I use floss for the measurement. it makes it easy too as well as reusing it.
@Ken_Dalton
@Ken_Dalton 4 года назад
@@ManypossibilitiesGaoLY yes metal would have to be soft of annealed. But I usually use fine silver for bezel which is always super soft anyway. The floss is a good trick too, an comes in handy so. I believe I've used either 0.4mm or 0.5mm 😁

This is a nice edited video with beautiful music. Well done. But it’s not a tutorial for those who are wondering, who want to learn. This is showing the 5% out of 100% of what needs to be done with the metal and solder to make a piece of jewelry. Just saying.

@@TheArtOfMetalsmithing May I ask you one more question? What kind of elastic cord do you use for bracelets? I bought one kind, but it broke really fast (even though it had quite good reviews on amazon).. Thank you! :)
@TheArtOfMetalsmithing
@TheArtOfMetalsmithing 5 лет назад
I know, it's really hard to tell, especially when buying online. I used one that I bought from a bead shop in Glasgow, they also sell online: www.mylerscrystals.com/1mm-super-strong-elastic-50-metre-roll--colour-white-13787-p.asp I used one called "clear" too, but it was slippery and wouldn't hold well. Also, it lost its strength super quickly! So I prefer the "white" one. And I always use at least double cord (can fit well in most beads that have 1mm hole). Using beading needle really helps, too. xxx

@@TheArtOfMetalsmithing Thank you again for your reaction and tips! :) I'm going on the search for my perfect cord (the shipping costs for me for this cord is 10 pond, so that's not worth it) and I'm going to use your tips! :)

I'm not sure what you mean? I've placed the cabochon in the bezel and then closed the walls around it, making sure everything fits well and the stone doesn't move. Is that what you had in mind? I hope this helps, thank you for watching! ❤️

Hello, what tool are you using at 4:52?
@TheArtOfMetalsmithing
@TheArtOfMetalsmithing 3 года назад
It's a pusher (bezel rocker) for setting the stone, with rounded tip, that helps to push the bezel around the stone

Love it! Quick silly question, the solder paste that you used to attach the ring to the bezel, is that easy silver solder? I take it the solder used for the actual ring and bezel is medium, is that correct? Sorry for these silly questions
@TheArtOfMetalsmithing
@TheArtOfMetalsmithing 5 лет назад
Thank you Andy! :D There are no silly questions!! Yes, that's exaclty the easy solder paste. I've been using the hard and easy ones lately and I've used easy one to solder the ring to the bezel. For the bezel and ring I've used hard solder from the strip. I don't use medium one. I do have it but I hated working with it, it wouldn't flow and just wasn't good for me. I will give it another go though, to check if maybe I was doing something wrong :) So most of the time I use hard and easy solder!
@farmerandy82
@farmerandy82 5 лет назад
@@TheArtOfMetalsmithing thanks for the feedback! I still need to give the hard solder a try, so far I've only played with the medium and recently bought easy paste to play with making earrings.
@TheArtOfMetalsmithing
@TheArtOfMetalsmithing 5 лет назад
No worries, glad I can help a little :) I like easy one because it's...easy ;)) And can be used for smaller work, too. Hard one is used mostly if there is more soldering needed, so first joints are soldered with hard, then medium, then easy for example. But hard solder feels more sturdy. It's not much more difficult to use or melt than easy solder, I don't really feel the difference.
