Self-made soil and now self-made moss poles, you should give pottery a try and make your own clay planters too! All the best stuff is what you make yourself.

I also added a glass watering globe to the top of the pole. Looks beautiful and let’s me know when water levels are going down!

If you soak the gutterguard In hot water, roll it lengthways, then dip it in cold water whilst holding it rolled up lengthways, it should stay in the new shape.

I would love to see a progress video on this moss pole! Have heard some bad stories where the moss gets covered in algae and the plant doesn’t grab onto the pole
@joehisel5966
@joehisel5966 Год назад
Algae means you're doing it right. Algae will grow on any moss that's maintained for optimal growing condition. Mold on the other hand is big time detrimental.

HOW TO FLATTEN THE MESH--- Heat the mesh by using an iron. Put a cotton dish towel over the mesh and then a hot iron , press down hard a few seconds. Voila flat mesh‼️ Also instead of zip ties use any cord or rope to wrap around the mesh and moss. The plant aerial roots will grab onto the rope and moss. The leaves, stems and vines will hide it all eventually

Just saying, I've been looking through so many moss pole videos on RU-vid and yours is by far the most informative, clear and visually appealing - the cost breakdown is very handy as well! I've been looking all over for these self watering moss poles after wicking my plant pots and unfortunately I can't find them here, so will definitely make one myself using your video. Thanks! Is there an update on how the moss pole performed with your plants? Would love to hear!

Hi I believe I saw this self watering one on planterior design too! I am definitely going to try this one using the gutter guard. Showed this to someone and they said maybe if I drilled a hole about 2 inches from the top and ran the cord through it I could later add a connector and expand it when the plant out grew the pole
@ErikaLodes
@ErikaLodes 3 года назад
Such a good idea!! I was thinking about how to expand it & came to the conclusion of having to make a new pole. Switching out poles is such a hassle tho 😭 the next time I’ll make it I’ll try to finesse that

A year later I found your video… so haven’t searched to see if you have done an update yet. But I think you can extend your pole. Since you used a pvc pipe, get a coupling and another pipe. Pull the existing string out of the pipe, install the coupling and new pipe. Wrap the cord you removed from the pipe up the new pipe. Get a new string, insert one end of the string back into the pipe, and wrap down to the old string so they touch, therefore allowing the water wicking to continue from the new string to the existing. Then wrap the new extension pipe with moss. Hope that makes sense. Now to search to see if you’ve done an update. Great video by the way!

Just had an idea as I watch the end of your video which was fantastic! You really did a great job with your video I especially like the little circle video in the video where you showed close up what you were doing you're very clever and very knowledgeable with the ability of your editing capabilities. Hope that makes sense! But the idea I had is before you use the Moss Pole really saturated with water maybe soak it in a basin or the bathtub but be careful you don't let a lot of junk go down the drain and clogged it up! That way it will help it sort of Prime the system! That way it'll start working right away! Not sure if you suggested that if you did I apologize cuz I knocked over one of my orchids and had to pick up the bark but I tried to keep listening!

Looks lovely. This will likely work in humid environments (like SE Asia). In normal to dry environments where people prefer to live (like indoors in winter or w/air conditioning in summer) I'm thinking that the wick will not be able to keep up with the evaporation from the sphagnum moss and it will still require a spray at the sink to stay moist.

Erika and friends: to make it easier (and get a better feel for how much to pack) rehydrate the moss in a bucket of water, then squeeze the excess before layering it on the screen.

I would be so interested to see you try out a wood pole or plank for your plants. I've been researching them and they seem super successful because you don't have to keep them moist and it mimicks the aerial roots latching on to trees!
@ErikaLodes
@ErikaLodes 3 года назад
Yay I was planning on making a video like this! I’ve been collecting old branches to use as stakes
@iAdrianT
@iAdrianT 2 года назад
My only concern with planks is... Don't u need high humidity in the room for them to work? Otherwise how will the aerial roots develop to attach to the plank? Let me know if you have any experience about it :) Thanks!
@harristanaya31
@harristanaya31 11 месяцев назад
@iAdrianT my plants did not like the planks or branches with bark. The plank got mold on it. I collect philos, they do best with this type of pole. There is a ton of ways to make a pole like this. Most of mine don't have the pvc pipe in the middle, I am trying this because everyone knows keeping it moist is an issue. Let me know if any type of plank or bark works for any of you! 🌳🌴🪴🌱🍀☘️🌿🌲

Love it! 👌 I have lot's of fabric white clothesline rope that I use to wick my African violets with and then I'll use tan jute twine to wrap some "older, not old" NZ spaghum moss over the top of the white rope🤔 Omitting the black mesh stuff. Think this will work?? 🤔
@EmmaMorgan09
@EmmaMorgan09 2 года назад
Update: I made two of these moss poles. The moss has completely dries out, and the capillary action of the water down the rope isnt enough to keep the whole thing moist. I even took them apart and remade them with the rope very closely wound to cover surface area. I added a water globe in the top so I could visually see when the level was decreasing. In conclusion, it doesn’t work for me. I would appreciated any advice. Thanks.

Hi Erika, can you make a follow-up video on the pole after using it for a while? I am thinking about DIY some moss poles myself for a long time, I saw someone make this but I'm kinda suspicious about the effectiveness of self-watering of this pole. I want to have a moss pole that can survivor a 1-week vacation when I'm not at home, and I am not sure if this pole will hold enough water to get the job done also keep the entire pole moist evenly. Also, may I know what's the size of the pot you prepare to use the pole on? Thanks a lot!

Yeah follow ups on these videos and after care issues would be nice. No offense but anyone can claim to make a decent one of these. I see clogging issues with this kind of setup.

i recently made a 6 foot one last night for my raphidophora decursiva... i used hot water to straighten the stuff out... LOL... that helped a lot... but i've been seeing a lot of videos... make sure you use PVC glue on the cap... sometimes they don't seal right and the water goes straight to the bottom of the pot... PVC glue melts and welds the PVC together... also, seems that lots of home depot have this stuff on clearance for 1.88... i picked up 10 of them because i have a ton of plants, and well, that was cheap...

Self watering moss pole sounds great in theory but would be worried about mold too!! Can’t imagine what else would grow in there - thinking about ‘gunk’ in humidifiers which are cleaned every other week and don’t have porous rope inside. Think you would have to use a lot of hydrogen peroxide. Like the gutter mesh idea for unself watering moss poll.

Maybe put the PVC cap on AFTER inserting the cord? That way you could hang a weight into the cord and cut it off when the cords all the way down. Or at least you could see that the cord actually didn’t bunch up and not go all the way down.
