I just built this exact moss pole yesterday before seeing your video. That’s wild. One thing I will try next time is using hot sand to soften the pipe at the bottom. That will allow for me to form a loop out of the PVC at the bottom of the pot. This should add a lot of stability to the PVC pole. Yesterday I also took twine and wove it into both sides of the plastic chicken wire like you would do a ladder stitch. That allowed for me to pull the twine to cinch up the plastic mesh. Which made it a lot easier to apply the zip ties. My beautiful wife also pointed out that I can use the longer part of the plastic chicken wire to make it as tall as I like. Which was a duhuh moment for me.

I am so happy to have stumbled across your video. I have been wanting to add some moss poles to my plants but the idea of how to water them was keeping me from doing it. With your self watering setup I am no longer nervous about adding moss poles!

Hi I just seen your video love your plants. Just a little FYI there are pvc connections that are flat and about 1/2 in space from pvc. They will sit nicely on the bottom of the pot and stand up on its own. I add a little bit of glue to mine. Thank you for the idea.

Hello, your video is quite helpful but I think that I will use coated metal chicken wire because the plastic one are too wobbly and fragile, the one in metal are more stable, thanks for the tips

I'm glad I came across this video, your guy-wires for stability are a great solution to heavier vines, and I agree that it looks cool! I'm wondering if you can update us on how well the wicking has worked. Is the wicking rope holding up against rot? Is too much water ending up at the bottom of the pole while the top dries out? Is there anything you would do differently now that you've had this set up for a while?
@kibretneguse3233
@kibretneguse3233 2 года назад
Great tutorial. I’m concerned about bacteria or mold growing on the pvc and wick over time so wondering if you’ve had any sign of that or concerns.

algea will overtake all these mosspoles in the long run, they just dont tell you that cause otherwise their amazon affiliate revenue goes away. The whole self watering moss pole is bad anyway cause the rope just deteriorates

@babygorilla4233
@babygorilla4233 Год назад
Can you use a cotton wick? I've got a fair number of self watering pots and such I've always gone with synthetic materials because they don't break down.
@CMZneu
@CMZneu Год назад
Nice video, one thing though, i have found conflicting answers but the maximum wicking height is around 30 cm or a foot, that is not a lot so almost all of the water in the pipe is wasted and only serves to create a pocket of stagnant water... also the sphagnum moss is if not better just as good at wicking water than the rope so idk it seems like there must be a better way.
@hostronic
@hostronic Год назад
Not true. I have a 4ft moss pole with wicking cord that wicks all the way to the bottom of the sphagnum. You have to use actual wicking cord for it to work.

I built my moss pole but the moss is drying out so I'm not sure what I did wrong. The wick has water at the bottom. I removed the cap and put it directly in a pot of water to make sure there's enough.

@Simplecreature75
@Simplecreature75 2 года назад
Did the same, even with a special self watering wick for plants and it doesnt work at wall. The water stays inside the pipe, i wrapped the wick neatly around the pipe, just as you did and it does exactly nothing for me. The moss dries out and i end up spraying it with water from the outside to keep it moist. Saw some people using 3 vertical lined up wicks, perhaps for exactly that reason because the wick you wrap around just doesnt transport the water well enough.

If you used microfiber cloth it won't degrade over time like moss does. Moss has to be changed out yearly but microfiber doesn't and you could use any color to match the walls of your home.

Instead of strings, try mounting it to a board with holes drilled into it then the soil and plant roots can weigh the board down keeping the poles in place. Think of it being in an L shape.
