Father's Day is around the corner. This year make Dad a Sidecar. It's sweet, it's sour, Dad will love it! Speaking of cars and it being Father's Day, have I told the story how my dad built a car just so he could drive to the recruiting office to join the Armed Forces? Happy Father's Day!

I might hint to my college aged stepdaughter this would be a great idea. My Dad joined up Dec 8th, 1941. He and his best friend joined up together, fought in the Solomons together, survived the war and came home together. They were whiskey and beer men, and friends til the end.

Thanks Bruce! I love sidecars and this is the quintessential version which is very hard to improve upon. I serve these instead of whisky sours with no complaints. Gotta gotta have Cointreau there is no sustitute in this drink. For those occasions where you need pitchers of them you can try St Remy French brandy on the cheap ;)

Le sidecar a été mentionné dans un feuilleton radiophonique sur la chaine France Inter, dans l'émission Les Maîtres du mystère, dans les années 60, je crois. Nestor Burma, "Colique de Plomb"!

I love your channel! You are truly an excellent content creator and I love learning about cocktails with you. When is better to use a Cointreau and when a Grand Marnier?
@BarTalkCocktails
@BarTalkCocktails 5 лет назад
Thanks! Cointreau tastes more like the rind or zest of an orange whereas, Grand Marnier tastes more like the inside or orange segments. Sometimes, it can simply be a preference as to which liqueur to use in your cocktails however, Cointreau will make your drink lighter and brighter tasting, with a stronger citrus aroma. Grand Marnier will bring weight and an oaky sweetness to your cocktail. I find that Cointreau is more versatile especially when working with light spirits like gin, rum or vodka. Grand Marnier is heavier and can throw off the flavour profile of your drink. The bottom line is if you substitute Grand Marnier for Cointreau consider reducing the other sweeteners in your drink to account for the added sweetness and weight. You'll get to know which one is right to use. Cheers!

Maybe I missed something, but I wish you had a "Bartender 101 for beginners" course. Bruce could teach it. Would also like to get a line of the "tools of the trade" and you should set up your own Amazon line and make a buck of two. The music is very appropriate to the production and presentation.

@@BarTalkCocktails Indeed I shall. One thing to consider, and make a few bucks for yourself and crew, are Amazon recommended products that first time or home cocktail makers would be wiling to purchase (you gotta start somewhere anyway) that give you the quality needed for long term usage and satisfaction and recommended by a real bartender. A good shaker is the place to start and I'd be interested in learning the insiders tricks and tips for all around bartending skills. I'll be watching.

Bruce - what do you think of using Mandarine Napoleon instead of Cointreau? As it turns out, I just tried it - and the verdict is: Not bad at all!
@BarTalkCocktails
@BarTalkCocktails 3 года назад
Good question William. Mandarine Napoleon certainly could work in making a Sidecar however, it’s much heavier and, unlike Cointreau being a triple sec, it’s more in the style of Grand Marnier, blending liqueur with brandy. Napoleon uses mandarins to make their liqueur so there is a difference - oranges vs mandarins. Personally, I think the mandarin flavours in Napoleon are overwhelmed by the sweetness. The flavours in Cointreau I find are more balanced between bitter orange and sweetness. Cheers!
@billcolbynewton
@billcolbynewton 3 года назад
@@BarTalkCocktails - Bruce, many thanks for the reply. I think you're right. I thought I'd try using Mandarine Napoleon because it looked like an interesting possibility - and because I was running out of Cointreau! :-)

my favorite liquor, and my favorite cocktail. although i use a dash of honey syrup instead of the sugar rim. don't use cognac. most budget brandys are way more bold in flavor. every different brand has a unique flavor. try them all to find the one you like best. it's a fun journey. my favorite just happened to be one of the cheapest ones in the store.

I make mine like this.... 2 ounces paul masson brandy, 1 ounce grand marnier, 3/4 ounce lime juice 1 bar spoon simple syrup and 2 dashes angostura bitters. Pour over 2 inch ice cube in an old fashion glass. Its a mix match frakenstein of cheap and decent but I like it.
