This is a video that shows how to make a 1964 half dollar coin ring without hammering. This method involves dies and ball bearings. I got all of my ball bearings at Napa auto parts. I also got a few at the machine shop. The main sizes I use are 18 mm for quarters, 20 and 23 mm for halves, and 24 and 26 mm for morgan dollars.
Here is the link to the video that shows a more complete tutorial on how to make half dollar coin rings.

If you paint that cut edge with a black magic marker, prior to sanding, then any inperfections, after sanding , really stand out.

I'm probably not telling you anything new at this point, but I've found heating the 64 JFK with a cheap harbor freight heat gun works flawlessly. Anneal often as hell, it turns a pretty gold and though I think they look better in a liver of sulfur bath it's not necessary, it has a really cool patina just from the heat gun. I personally think a reversed 64 JFK is the most beautiful ring there is (the Morgan is slowly winning me over), I've made probably a dozen 64's all with the heat gun (about 10 anneal stops each) and have never had an issue. Your videos are inspiring, so I knew to watch out for this problem on my first one (my personal PR65) and I'm very grateful for your generosity of knowledge. I've modeled my setup after yours since the hammer and mandrel (which I still use and enjoy)! Ring on Ringer!

that is a great idea! I will try using my heat gun. I recently started putting on pepe lube just before annealing and when it starts to smoke, it is perfectly annealed. The heat gun is a perfect tool though. Thanks for the tip!

This video really helped me!!!! I tried a couple of Kennedy's and had the splitting problem. I was deburring the edges and did not and. I was missing some of the minute scratches and that was causing the splitting. Thanks again for your great help!! Hope all is well in your world!!

Just stumbled on your channel and find what you do remarkable. I did wince where you were punching out Morgan silver dollars, I have a bunch from my grandfather so I guess I am sentimental about that coin. Keep up the great vids!

Would a 43 liberty silver half dollar coin need the same annealing process color and tone?

Pardon a dumb question. Does using using the steel balls not mar the coin where it touches or am I missing it? I'm a newbie still trying to figure it all out.

part 14:12 it was toward the end of the video when you were sizing the ring you put it in your die it is the piece you used to press it down with your press the piece that was used between your press and die can you make one and how much
@CoinRingsfromTheMint
@CoinRingsfromTheMint 9 лет назад
No sorry but I can't. You can use a short socket or something like that to put between the press and coin though. Thanks! Skyler

can you tell me how you changed your handle on the ring stretcher, mine seems like it might break soon, its kinda wobbly
@CoinRingsfromTheMint
@CoinRingsfromTheMint 8 лет назад
I just unscrewed the handle and put an old mandrel in there. I knew those handles break so I was preemptive lol.
@mynexgen
@mynexgen 8 лет назад
+Tacolayo I just put a piece of 3/4 PVC (about 4 inches longer than the handle) over my handle on day 1. It's WAY more comfortable, it has give (to tell you to anneal again, seriously anneal again!), plus it gives your more leverage. $0.50 solution. If it's stupid but it works, it's not stupid.

New to your videos - just got into making coin rings - and your video are great - thank you! 1st Question - what do you use as the underpayment for the annealing process? 2nd Question - who is giving you a “thumbs-down”?! HE>I

I'm using a fire panel that my dads company makes but you gain get a fire brick at lowes. But better yet would be a charcoal block. That is what jewelers use most of the time. You can find them on Amazon.

Skyler, how do you anneal the Kennedy 40% silver half dollar compared to the 1964 Kennedy and the clad Kennedy half dollar?
@AC-fv7kt
@AC-fv7kt 7 лет назад
Gene Lancaster I heat them similar to a walking liberty and anneal in acid like the 64. Rims are harder to keep straight on the 40% Silvers....for some reason they are harder to work with than 90% silver coins.
@genelancaster3362
@genelancaster3362 7 лет назад
Are the clad Kennedy's or 90% silver Kennedy's easier to work with?
@AC-fv7kt
@AC-fv7kt 7 лет назад
Gene Lancaster not my channel but clad Kennedy is a breeze to deal with. 90% silver is harder to anneal. take a marker and mark the 90%silver and once the mark dissappears....stop. clad just get bright red and drop in water.

There are two types 8n that year. One is the regular non silver one and then there was also a special 40% silver one. The 40% ones are the same price as the 1964 halves but the regular ones are half the price. You can check the pricing and everything on my website www.changeyoucanwear.net. Thanks! Skyler

The problem with modern coins is they don't have silver for the most part. I do use them though but most people are looking for silver

Coin Rings from The Mint - Change You Can Wear Sounds good.... thanks so much. Also, I know you've referred people to Dave for the custom dies but I haven't been able to get a hold of him and I was wondering if you wouldn't mind putting me in touch with the machinist that makes your dies? So that I can see about getting them for the half dollars. I remember you had said in one of your comments on another video that you'd rather not be a middle man so that's why I'm asking if you wouldn't mind putting me in touch with the person who makes yours. I've gone to several different machine shops and they've all shot me down. So, I'm just trying to get a hold of those half dollar dies.... just seems like they make things much easier.
@CoinRingsfromTheMint
@CoinRingsfromTheMint 9 лет назад
I am a bit bummed out that Dave isn't working out. I just recently tried buying a punch from him with no response. My machinist is in his mid 80's and I don't think he is interested in making them anymore but I will check with him. I am going to eventually figure out a stable source for all of this stuff. I don't really want to become a machinist to get it done though lol.

You do a good job at making these but I'm a coin collector and some of these coins are so rare making a ring really decreases the value
@CoinRingsfromTheMint
@CoinRingsfromTheMint 9 лет назад
Thanks for the comment! Which coins do you think are rare over junk silver value? I don't use any rare coins for the most part. Every coin I use costs less than the ring I make with it or I couldn't have a viable business. Making them into a ring actually increases their value :)

you are actually hardening the silver NOT annealing it. let it cool slowly to anneal it.
