OMG! You my dear are a life saver. ☺️☺️☺️☺️ I was pulling my hair out, from following the instructions from another video person on this topic. I spent 20hrs trying to get my spiral planner just to fit in the kdp-amazon upload. Then something told me to research a little further on RU-vid to find answers that I needed as to why my spiral date planner was not being accepted in the KDP Amazon upload and you answered all my questions I need a totally different template platform and I didn't know anything about Lulu I've been strictly using the KDP because I am new at this and I'm still trying to build my passion for creating these types of books thank you so much you are such a lifesaver for me today thank you so much. Thanks for the information - helpful as always. One thing I would mention: your voice comes through clear, but the volume is always extremely low. I usually have to pretty much max out my volume to hear your videos and when the ads come on, it blasts my speakers. I had this same issue when I started recording and it's an easy fix that really helped my audience. Thanks again and I look forward to the next video!

I got lost on the interior file part. I downloaded the one from lulu (weekly planner) but also created the lined version you illustrated in another video. Can you show us what uploaded the file actually looks like? When I upload an interior file (120pages) it is not allowing the option to have a spiral notebook. Also, can we see the inside and outside of a final project. Thank you for this content.

Thank you so much for the wonderful video. I've looked through your content but I can't find anything specific to profit comparison. I am trying to decide which option is best, FBM or FBA, but I am struggling to catch all of the necessary moving parts for me to know which one would bring a higher profit. I understand it depends on the price I can potentially get from a delivery service such as USPS/Fedex/UPS/etc, but I don't even know enough on how the FBA works for me to be able to compare with FBM once getting those shipping prices.

Thanks, Caroline, I just publish my book, and it is so much easier than KDP, I had so many problems with KDP, especially the "Beta" hard copy it sucks, but the paperback is ok there, but I like Lulu now because of you hahaha...you are such an angel.

Hi Caroline, What you share is very helpful. Thanks. If I understand correctly I can opt to see my book with Lulu and the global market at the same time, right? In this case I need to have an Amazon account or Lulu takes care of the sale, do I only receive royalties? Hello! You're welcome! With the spiral bound option it's only available through Lulu, not it's distributors so if you aren't getting the option to create spiral bound, make sure that you have not selected the distribution option in the set up.

It looks like Lulu has better paper selections. Now I am tempted to look into it more for my coloring books. I hate having to include a blurb in my KDP listings that people shouldn't use art markers in the coloring books.

Lulu definitely has better options - they have a thicker interior paper to choose from which might suit colouring books better.

@@MyFreedomEmpire they are so much more expensive than KDP. Such a shame there's not a more affordable way to print journals/notebooks etc (update - it seems Lulu is only based in the US. Is that correct? I'm in the UK, and shipping books from the US really isn't a viable option for me.

It is really interesting to know how to sell non KDP books on Amazon ! What about using a traditional printer and use FBA to sell it ? As a children’s book illustrator I would love to be able to sell board books, hardcover with less than 72 pages and even pop ups... I struggle to find the best way to do that. Would you have any advice ? Ordering 1000 copies in advance would be ok for me. Thank you for this video!

Sure, you can use a traditional printer and sell via FBA. I would just say do your research and find a reputable supplier with a good price. Ask for samples first. Also, join some of the children's book authors/illustrator groups on facebook because lots of people have already published books by having them printed themselves and you could ask for printer recommendations.

I like the idea of doing something low content of higher quality, including spiral. Does Lulu also do better quality paper, embossed covers, elastic band to close the book or keep your page, an envelope insert? Special touches.

Lulu does have a better quality paper option. They do embossed covers but no on the spiral books. The embossed covers you can do are a foil type of print on a linen cover hard cover. Currently, their spiral bound books do't have the option of the elastic close or inside pocket.

I actually opened a LuLu account at least 6-7 months ago but never uploaded any of my KDP products to it - with a new ISBN, etc. of course. This was super helpful, especially the cover designer and Canva connection, that was really cool. Thank you! p.s. Thank you very much for your video. It is very informative. A question: How does Amazon handle returns? Who is paying for the return? How much do they charge you? Do they deduct from the profit you made, or they may charge you separately. That would be a great video. That would be a great video. If a retailer bought your book in bulk and decides to return them... could you lose a lot of money. Thank you for any information you could provide.

Thanks for this video! Is it possible to advertise with amazon ads going through Lulu & Amazon FBA? From my experience, it is not possible to turn on ads for the entire category of books on Amazon FBA. However, recently KDP enabled the option to turn on ads through their advertising platform also for external books. Do you have first hand experience with using ads? Thanks a lot for your answer :)

I had my front cover created by a graphic designer for a hardcover book. However, I need it changed. How do I change the cover to fit a spiral book instead? I'm haveing a heck of a time creating a spiral bind book. I have my own interior that I created on bookbolt and my own cover as well. The only option I can get is paper back, is there something I am doing wrong? It's a 200 page 7x 10 book. When I get to the bind options it only offers paperback and everthing else is " locked". I'm still trying to find a good POD alternative for spiral bound books. Unfortunately, lulu only makes spiral bound bindings for soft cover books, there is no hard cover option. Additionally, they just offer a flimsy plastic spiral. I'm trying to find a POD service for hard cover steel spiral binding but seems like there is no option yet.

You're welcome! You won't be able to put any links on your listing on Amazon. The only thing you could do is put a page inside your book to let people know there is a spiral bound version of it.

Hi! I am so excited to try this after not having any success selling on KDP. One thing that is not coming up for me is the coil bound option to print. It is showing is locked and unavailable?

Hello! It may have something to do with the distribution. If you select to have Lulu distribute it, then it will only show the options available tot those distributors as they print the book not Lulu. If you chose to just have Lulu print and not distribute the book spiral bound should show up.

In my case I have a picture book and I learned that POd places like ingramspark and KDP do not print colorful flyleaf. I have been considering this open. But I am not sure if it worth it cost wise and everything!

You're welcome! You would just have to do the sums and work out how much it will cost you to make, sell etc in fees and if you can price it competitively enough to makes sales as well as make a profit that you're happy with.

I'm not sure honestly, I've only had experience with KDP printing so far and on the Lulu website it says: "Sell your self-published book on Amazon, Barnes & Noble, the Ingram Network, and more. Lulu's Global distribution service reaches over 40,000 retailers and schools around the world." So I'm not even sure who all the distributors are that they work with as they don't list them all.

Can I use my same design that I used for my journals, to make notebooks on Lulu? Will the ISBN number be a issue? due to I will be using the same design? Hello! Interesting question...I'm not 100% sure about this one because how would they know you are doing this so I can't see it being a major problem but personally I would change something about the second book, so at least change the title a little bit so they aren't exactly the same.

Hello, superb video thank you, can you confirm if this information is still current (2023/24)? I'm about to publish a wire bound cook book (so it lays flat when cooking), I'm intending to sell it in the general Amazon market place with stock up front, not KDP, but it could well end up being better suited to KDP and will make the shift at that time. I'd ideally prefer not to need changing layout etc to suit a different binding so eager to factor in what may be necessary. Thank you again. Daisy

You did a great job of going through all the steps, super helpful! I have 2 questiosn. 1) What is the amount that Amazon FBA takes off each item? If you're making a profit of $5 each book, how much of that profit will go to Amazon for FBA, in which case what is your actual net per book? Yes you are one of most followed. I ran into a problem when trying to upload on lulu, it didn’t give me the option of spiral, and that’s the only reason for lulu, any tips as to why it would not me chose a spiral?

You need to make sure you have not selected distribution on Lulu if you want to print spiral bound.

You're welcome 😄 You can, you just have to make sure to provide your own ISBN, not use the free KDP or Lulu one (unless you are printing with a different cover type).

@@MyFreedomEmpire When you say "cover type" do you a different design? Because I was thinking I could print via KDP and then take the ones that are selling well and sell a spiral bound via Lulu. But if I had to change the cover design I wouldn't know if it would continue to sell well.

Independently published activity kids' book available on spiral bound, but at least 1 year the book is available only on the standard format and a few days ago they add spiral bound, how they do this.
