How to make a voice over reel for beginners in 10 simple steps!
Chance are, if you have landed on this video, you have dreamt of jumping into the voice over world for a while now, and are finally ready to take that plunge and make your first voice over reel! First of all: godo for you, this step is a bit of a scary (albeit exciting) one to take. I hope I can help make it a litte easier. foryou.
In todays video, I go over all the important steps of making your first voice over reel, from picking your scripts, to recording them all the way through to adding royalty free music.
As a self taught, new voice over artist (only been in the game for 9 months!) with over 10 full length audio books, and 500 voice overs under her belt: It's safe to say that I know my way around the business at least a little bit. With that said, I have no formal training. Everything I have learned about becoming a self employed voice over artist, I have learned from research, trial and error. I still have a lot to learn, but wanted to share with you how I have approached tackling a voice over reel - in hopes that it will help get you started.

Well - I definitely missed out mentioning that you need to put all of your voice overs back to back... that's a rather LARGE step. Apologies if that left any of you hanging, and I'm thinking of doing a follow up regarding that point. Also, I'm TOTALLY EMBARRASSED that I had something stuck in my teeth for those replacement shots. LOL. *Face Palm*. ANYWAY! When you say back to back, does that mean as soon as you are done one, the reel just goes right into the other? Do you need to say in the reel where the script is from and the name of the role? Do you need to slate, telling them where you are from or if you are part of a union? Thank you, the video was really helpful, these were just the only things that I wasn't clear about.

This video was EXCELLENT. Valuable information, to the point and well paced. As a teenager, I used to record people singing/rapping in my bedroom. I enjoyed helping by using my 'ear' during the music writing and editing for people afterwards! I was also known as the guy with the deep voice. Could this be a match made in heaven? I took notes on your video on a napkin, which will be framed if this goes anywhere for me 😅. Kudos to jumping in and avoiding perfectionism. Wishing you the very best!!

Great info thank you. Certainly a lot to think about. One question though, in your reel you use brand names. Are these actual adverts you've done? I'm wondering if I could get in trouble for using trademark names whilst starting out on my reel.

This is incredible. I've need just a little bit of advice for a few things, and this was amazing an inspiring. Could I ask, what do you use to edit your work? I have abelton, and it works pretty well/comes with filtering addons, and fun other things. But I've been told there is better software out there for it. Would love to know your thoughts!

Thanks for watching and letting me know :) I currently use Logic X Pro because it is what I learned on when I took a very brief production course, so it was easier for me to continue using it. I was lucky to get it with a student discount, otherwise it can run quite pricey. I’m not very familiar with abelton myself, but have heard great things from people who use it. I know that you can also sometimes get a pro-tools subscription with the purchase of sound gear, I’m not sure if focusrite still offers it, but they used to offer a pro-tools download with purchase of their interfaces

Thank you so much for this! I have been wanting to get into voice acting for a bit and was recently let go from my job so now I really want to jump in! You have provided by far the most helpful information I've found online for beginners with such detailed steps that are answering all my major questions! I do have one question regarding gear though- I have an Audio-Technica USB mic that I've been using for recording singing. I don't have an interface since I plug it directly into my computer. Is this something that I absolutely need or does it depend on the mic you have? Thanks so much!

Heya Sarah! I’m so happy you found this helpful! I’m sorry to hear about getting let go, I’ve been there and that (with a mix of other things) is how I found myself doing voice overs as well! I’m a firm believer in getting started with whatever you can, doing the best job you can. If you’re not in a place to invest in a better quality microphone, I wouldn’t let that hold you back. I would get started practicing with the current mic you have and then upgrade when you’re ready and able to do so. You will come across jobs that require a better mic set up, but it’s not a deal breaker for all jobs - I hope that helps!

What do you read for demo reels? Is it any movie or show script or do you make it up?

I've also looked at other videos in other people's advice and they say don't add music or sound effects because that's not really what people are looking for. They can get that later and if you don't do it perfectly, it can often ruin or taint a performance.

Interesting - was this advice for voice over reels to promote your services, or for file delivery? I always deliver my voice overs (not audiobooks) as clean files with no music, unless otherwise requested/arranged - in which case I would deliver both the clean file alongside the musical version. For voice reels I’ve always used the music in the background, but I haven’t actually experimented with not using music. Definitely food for thought, and I think I’ll give the clean reel a try to see if it helps with securing any other jobs, thanks!

I was recording into Logic X Pro and then I master the audio on Audacity (because they have the ACX check plug in - so helpful!).

I use logic x pro because that’s what I have for my music production, but you really can get started with almost anything. If you’ve got apple and want to start on mobile, GarageBand is free and would work for beginners! Audacity is also free, and works with both PC and Apple but I don’t think they have an app.

I recently got asked to do a sample of video editing and voice over which turned into being working like a job with no contract or pay. I finally told the guy I was done unless we had a deal! He told me many times my voice overs were great. My question is do you use video when your doing voice over reels? Also would you use something like this I already did as part of a reel? I already have a template set up for voice overs with good audio settings. Do you just use a photo of yourself for demo reel, or video like a commercial edited? Thanks!

Heya Matt - sorry for the delay here, I’m just seeing this now! Thanks for watching and for reaching out :) first of all: I’m sorry you were dealing with a tricky customer, that sounds very frustrating. Unfortunately dealing with them is part of self employment, the worst part! Sounds like you handled it well though, I don’t provide services for free unless it’s for a charity and it’s been decided before hand. Re video with voice reels: I think It depends on where and how you are using them I think, but if you have the ability to produce a talking head video with some b roll of your studio set up mixed in (using the sound set up of course!) then I think these tend to perform well if you are connecting directly with clients/on Fiverr. If you don’t have the capacity to make this and have it look professional, then a simple photo of yourself with your demo reel also works really well! This last one is what I’m currently using while I wait to produce an introductory video, mostly because I’m lazy and have become complacent. Definitely time for me to step up my game though 😅 I hope that helps!

Excuse me miss I have hardwood floors and when I record it has a echo it's annoying how do I get rid of it

Oooo the dreaded hard wood floors! Beautiful, but so annoying when recording audio. Are you looking for a temporary solution or a permanent one? Temporarily, I would recommend throwing a duvet on the ground and then setting up on top of it. Then build a blanket fort around your mic set up using cushions and other large blankets to absorb the sound. Long term: investing in a decent studio rug, and some sound baffles, and eventually building a booth will really help. Either way, you want to make sure you cover as many of the reflective surfaces with material that will absorb the sound. This will help control the echo. I hope that helped!

Do you mean the music I release as an artist? I try to be objective when I’m creating things that are only connected to my music because of who I am. More often than not, the music I create isn’t actually the best fit for the topic/feel of the voice overs I’m choosing for my reels. I try to pick music that best suits the voice over/mock ads, rather than forcing my music to fit into something simply because it’s something I want more exposure on. I do the same thing with my RU-vid videos - and try to pick background music I feel is more universally attractive/not distracting from the content I’m producing here, because the focus is on creating educational content and tutorials. If not using my own music means getting more eyes on the content, then it’s worth it, because the content can then reach/potentially help more people.

I know one tip to get rid of the gross mouth sounds Is lemon juice and water and just drink water because it helps not sound all like Saliva

Such a good tip! I go through about 1-2 litres of water per hour I spend speaking when recording voice overs. Definitely helps with the gross mouth sounds!

@@BigEighties1 The engagement and interaction on my videos, as well as the watch time, is why my videos are still being pushed out with the youtube algorithm/having them pop up as a search result when people are looking for relatable content. I didn't swipe it from Instagram Reels, or Tiktok, I learned about it from the source itself: RU-vid :) It's great really, because even when we get unpleasant comments from people like yourself: it still helps push the videos out! If you're interested in learning more about the youtube algorithm, I learned most of what I know from Nick Nimmen, Roberto Blake and Annie Dube. I also use Tube Buddy to help streamline the SEO process.
