Ingredients
- 6-7 cups wet abacha
- 1/2 cup palm oil
- 2 cooking spoons potash water
- 1 cup ugba/ukpaka/african oil bean seed
- 1 onion bulb
- 3 scotch bonnet peppers (atarodo)
- 2 seasoning cubes
- 1 table spoon crayfish
- 1/2 table spoon ground pepper
- Salt to taste
- Utazi leaves
- Garden eggs
- Smoked fish

Hi Zeelicious, there is alternative to potash. It’s called ngu or ash. It’s made from burnt dried palm frond and plam nut thorns

Thank you. I bought the "ngu" just now and was clueless as to what it actually is before I use it. I literally watched this video just to see if the blogger used it but was disappointed she used the typical potash. I'm happy you miraculously answered my question. Cheers!!

Ngu is actually a healthier substitute to edible potash. Potash purges some people but ngu doesn’t. Try ngu next time and you will love it.

You did well, but soaking abacha in boiled water for that long isn’t a wise choice though. Next time, leave it for just a few seconds and rinse off immediately. It will still feel strong but will soften by the time you are ready to use…. This way, the abacha won’t soak up water and feel too soft or watery… Trust me, you will see the difference when you try it this way…

There is subtitude for potash... I don't know the English name but in Igbo itz called NGO...

Thanks, just made the most delicious Abacha I have ever made with your help. Though instead of Potash I used Ogiri n prepared veg(Spinach) separate with ginger, crayfish, garlic, dried fish n onions and then put fresh tomato while serving

Thank you so much for this recipe. From my observation, you didn't use Ogiri and Ehuru. Thought Ogiri nd Ehuru re sole ingredients in making nice Abacha but I'd give this procedure a try✨

There is an alternative to potash ma’am you can either use ash same way you dissolved the potash you do same to the ash. And if you don’t want a swollen abacha you can soak with cold water instead of hot and allow for some minutes then it comes out slimmer

You can use ash water(ngu) in place of potash. Potash makes me purge
