Light is not what causes side pinning, it is the perfect micro climate that is created between the substrate and the tub as the substrate shrinks. Simply put, If you don't have your surface conditions right the pins will go to the side where the conditions are better.
Hey Great idea, I never thought of it in 4 1/2 years. I can’t think of another mycologist who thought of it, can’t wait to try it! Just a tip w/mush luv is….. when you cut your liner make it so it’s a double then not just no side pins but the inside layer will stick to your cake!
This was cool tip. Weather you figured it out by yourself or not, thx for sharing. I have once tried growing but it went south. But I remember I just put the plastic in, filled carefully and folded the excess on the sides. Worked well but this is easier.
Great question. Before I actually mix everthing in I spray the container with isopropyl, put the bag in, spray again, and then put the top on until I'm ready.
I like to use 2 liners. The inner liner will stick to your cake as it shrinks. I find if I only use one, I'll get a gap once the cake shrinks a bit as it dries out.
You don’t need a liner.. You will get side pins no matter what.. liners will hold too much water in substrate.. Hey side pins equals more mushrooms.. which are very good still..
Spray paint does help, and it is on par with what is trying to be accomplished here, but the issue with spray paint is it does not account for shrinkage. The block shrinks as it ages. If you just spray paint there will still be growth on the sides and bottom likely. The bag adhears to the colony snd shrinks with it as it contracts.
Isopropyl alcohol is sprayed under the liner and over the liner. One thing to note thohgh on the mixture Coco coir and fully myceliated grain there is nothing for bacteria to colonize. I've never once had a problem with contamination with this.
Great question and you would think so, I would think it may depend on what type of tape you use. I use masking tape or painters tape. It always shrinks with the cake and holds it's form.
I must have not mentioned it in the video. The liner is great for keeping out side pins, but it also keeps the cake together as it shrinks down once mushrooms start growing.
I found an even easier way, I take duct tape and apply it along the bottom outside of the container, that totally does the trick, you never have to make a liner.
This would be the same as painting it. It would work for side pins mostly. One thing the liner does a great job of is not only preventing side pins but as the water leaves the whole cake the liner will shrink with it all. It makes for easy clean up too.
As the substrate pins it shrinks in size. The liner sticks to it. Paint will prevent some side pins but definitely not all. Tried it, doesn't work as well.
@@derock5244 I use paint on the exterior if I use a mono or dub tub for small quick flushes with a grow light. Side pins have not been much of an issue. I usually use a utility tub in the basement. Only downside is if mold grows you can lose a large amount. Having a clean room and using a bit of the mycelium cake to the next spawn bag works great.
